{ } He stood there, all six feet four inches of stolid, unflappable man, gazing up at the perfectly innocuous door that led to the Ranger Station with the air of a man staring into the very jaws of death itself. Well, not quite - but he was looking at it with some small amount of displeasure; Lips compressed into a firm line, brows furrowed a touch more intensely than usual, and fingers slowly flexing back and forth. < Honestly, Bronze, do relax. I know this is something of a momentous occasion for you humans, but you are usually so composed. It’s just a starter Pokemon, hardly anything truly special. > His slate-hued eyes flicked to the small, dark shape that sat by his side, the corner of his mouth twitching up in amusement at the faint trace of mild rancour that laced the Zorua’s elegant tones. She’d been sore about the whole ‘official starter pokemon’ thing since he’d brought it up - which was perfectly fair, really. She’d been with him for years, after all, so it was only natural to be a touch prickly about not being considered his starter. The stiff fabric of his beloved navy jacket rustled softly as he rolled a shoulder in a slow shrug, replying with a placating, ”C’mon now, Valia, you know you’re my special lady. Don’t be upset with me, we need more pokemon on our team if we’re to do well, and it’s just the way things are done here.” He flashed her a quick smile, doing his best to ignore the slowly tightening knot of apprehension that was lodged within his chest. She ignored him, naturally, instead turning a cool gaze upon the doorway and maintaining an aloof silence. She’d get over it, he was sure. Probably. Sweat trickled down his back and stuck his shirt to his chest. He was regretting wearing the jacket. He returned his focus to the Ranger Station and frowned at the offending building. Why did he have to have his nerves flare up like this, now? It was just a starter pokemon, nothing earth shattering - Except that it was supposed to be the most important step on a Trainer’s journey, and I've been dreaming about it for two decades now. What if it was a pokemon he didn’t like? What if he wasn’t suited to raising the kind fate selected for him? What if it doesn’t like me? His fingers contracted into a tight fist, eliciting a creak of protest from the thick, protective gloves he wore - sans fingers, because he hated the lack of sensation that caused. It was stupid, he knew. He was usually pretty good with pokemon, being pretty calm and quiet, but...He couldn’t shake the trepidation that the thought incurred. It could be the most pathetic, wretched excuse for a pokemon in all the world, and it’d still wound him to have his intended starter spurn him. He could have gone to the lab, where they had pokemon that were specifically intended to be starters, and a healthy number of them, too, so being rejected wasn’t too much of a concern. But that hadn’t really felt right to him, not really. The way the Rangers did it called to him, spoke to him on some level that he couldn’t quite express. Maybe it felt more natural to him - despite the unnatural nature of the reserves the pokemon were kept in. Maybe he liked the idea of helping a pokemon that wasn’t as fortunate as the ones in the lab. It didn’t really matter. He’d done his research, mulled it over, and, well. None of that mattered now, because he was here. No sense turning back now. He took a slow, steadying breath and unfurled his aching fingers, resolving to just get it over with. What would be would be, and if it didn’t work out - so be it. He had Valia, and he could always catch more pokemon. He ascended to the Station, and passed through the doorway inside, reining in the worries that threatened to flare up as soon as he crossed the threshold. Blessed air conditioning. Sweet, artificially cooled air! He let out a quick breath of relief and elected to remove the jacket, folding it up over his left arm as he stepped up to the desk and withdrew the form from his pocket, which he presented without fanfare of flourish. He’d filled it out before arriving, double and triple-checking it to be certain, and the appointment was pre-arranged. He didn’t like leaving room for error, where possible. “Hey there, Ranger. Pleasure to meet you. I have a Starter appointment, under the name Thaddeus Nathaniel Winters - but call me Bronze, please.” He offered a genuine, warm smile as he extended a hand towards the Ranger, the bronze studs on his knuckles gleaming faintly in the light. Valia sat primly at his side, tail curled about her feet, gazing up at the Ranger unreadably. MADE BY VEL OF GS @mod

Mae tapped her fingers absently on the desk, discreetly looking out the window with a small smile on her face. This wasn't the first trainer she'd seen hesitate outside of their doors, not by far - while she had a youthful look about her, Mae was a mother of two and she'd been around for longer than she cared to admit. But when she was younger, she'd been just the same. Younger that this man, all nerves and excitement. When he did finally walk in - her pre-determined appointment - she easily shook his hand at his greeting. "Welcome, Bronze. I'm Mae, it's nice to meet you." He looked nervous, speaking quickly and with well-thought-out phrases, but he seemed like a genuinely nice sort. Movement, a smaller shadow toward the ground, drew the woman's interest, and she leaned over the desk on her elbows. There was a Zorua at the man's feet, looking quite sullen at the whole affair. "And who's this?" she asked, not unkindly. Sometimes trainers came in already graced with a companion of some sort, but it wasn't often, and there were of course rules. While the Outpost was more than willing to help trainers get a start, they had to be sure people were coming in for the right reasons. The darker sorts had tried different methods to catch a rarer Pokemon from time to time, so one could never be too careful.
Mae's Mienshao, Ravina, hovered near the elevator, primly holding the items for the appointment - but she didn't approach, obviously also awaiting an answer. Her eyes were sharp for any sign of trouble, but she'd switch to bored at a moment's notice if the right answers were given. Honestly, desk work was not her favorite, and she was itching to get back out into the biomes.

{ } A handshake. Good. A handshake he could do, and do well. He’d always been told that he had a good handshake; Not so hard as to be like having your hand in a vice but firm enough that it wasn’t like shaking a wet dishcloth, either. Confident, calm, collected. That was how handshakes were supposed to be, and he wasn’t so nervous as to botch such a simple thing. Tense, maybe. That was a better word for it, though he was a little surprised at himself for feeling even that - He was usually so composed, so level. But then...It was kind of a big day, for him especially. His fault for putting such importance on it for so many years, likely, but that didn’t stop him from feeling those worries and what-ifs weighing down on him. Maybe if he had a supportive would-be partner to encourage him and reason away his worries, but something told him that Valia would be frosty for some time to come. Still, at least someone was being pleasant about the whole scenario. Bronze was the sort of person to judge people by the feel he got for them within the first little while of knowing them, and he was rarely wrong when it came to his instincts - and they told him that Mae was a nice one. So he found himself easing, just a fraction, the taut muscles of his neck and shoulder ratcheting down on the pressure just an inkling as he nodded at the Ranger. Even wound up as tight as he was, though, he didn’t miss the Mienshao that stood a little ways off. His eyes remained on the fighting type just long enough to note the items and the manner in which she scrutinised him before returning to Valia, to whom he gestured with his right hand, fingers splaying. “This is Valia. I know it doesn’t seem like it right now, but we’re old friends. She helped me out in a big way, a long while back, and even though she’s a little cross with me right now, I know she’ll be there for a long while still.”He smiled down at the Zorua, a sincere fondness in his strong features, despite the manner in which Valia very pointedly did not meet his gaze. Instead, she inclined her head and bent her forelegs in a bow towards Mae and in a cool, yet cordial voice, said, < Good day to you, Ranger Mae. A pleasure to meet you, if not to be here. >The large man rolled his eyes and offered Mae an apologetic shrug. “She’s a lovely lady when she warms up to you, I promise.” He inhaled and exhaled, nodding towards the elevator. “And what about your colleague?” He paused, made a face, and added, “I’m stalling, aren’t I? Sorry. I’m ready whenever you are, just...Been preparing and daydreaming about this day since I was little, you know? I think waiting so long’s made it worse.”MADE BY VEL OF GS

Mae hummed, delighted by the little Zorua despite her obvious reluctance. It reminded her of her youngest son, petulant in public but an absolute sweetheart behind the scenes. But still, she hesitated. Strictly speaking, the rules were very clear: Pokemon were only for trainers without an active Pokemon. However, she felt her heart going out to the young man. He seemed so excited, and she just didn't have the heart to turn him away here. She glanced over at Ravina, who knew her trainer well enough at this point to guess her thoughts, and the Mienshao gave a casual shrug. It wasn't skin off of her back if they got caught, after all. Mae turned her attention back to the trainer with a smile. "Alright. Alright, let's go. Ravina, the elevator, please." Mae walked out from behind the desk, waving for the young man and his Pokemon to follow her. Just before they got onto the elevator, though, Mae paused. "If you wouldn't mind, though, Valia will need to either remain here or go back into a Pokeball. The Pokemon in the biomes don't always take well to strangers, and I'd hate for anyone to get hurt."After a moment the elevator opened, and Mae stepped on. As Ravina pressed the appropriate buttons, causing the contraption to move down and to the left at some speed, Mae finished her small introduction. "As you know from the paperwork, the first Pokemon you come across is the only one you'll get a shot at. Some of them can be volatile, so if I say to you need to get behind Ravina with me. I'm not expecting trouble, but you never know." It was said cheerfully, pleasantly, and she plowed on without really waiting for responses. She tended to be just as excited as the new trainers, honestly. The Mienshao handed the man a Pokeball as the doors opened once more, revealing an artificially built but completely functional grassland. It didn't take much of a walk to find their first signs of life - and it probably wasn't the Pokemon Mae would have picked for a new trainer. Except, well, rules were rules, right? The Growlithe bared its teeth when it saw them approaching, abnormal green eyes staring directly at the Mienshao. For the first time, Ravina spoke up, sagely watching the young Pokemon. < Calm now, youngling. Don't start anything you can't finish. >Mae looked at Bronze, then shrugged. "He's just... rebellious. A bit hot-tempered. But as long as you don't boss him around, he warms up pretty quickly. He has more of an issue with the stronger Pokemon than with people. Give it a try, talk to him? We'll be right here."-- [googlefont=Open+Sans]
