@mod, 626 words | | You're the apple to my pie So far, Inset wasn't anywhere near as interesting as Rhys had hoped it would be. Sure, he hadn't managed to actually look around, having just arrived a few days ago, but it seemed like a quiet little region so far. There wasn't much going on in the town he had stayed in for a night besides the lab, which he guessed would be his next stop. He just hoped that getting a starter didn't come with some sort of fee; getting a place to sleep and buying some food for the next day had wiped out what little Rhys had been left with, so he was practically left with the clothes he had left and what few food items he had managed to stock up on. If he didn't find some money, and soon, he wouldn't be able to go much further.
But was that so much of a bad thing?
Pushing the thoughts to the back of his mind, he gathered what little he had left, waiting for Reese to head to his side like the Rockruff always had. Besides the setting, everything was exactly the same. Almost. Rhys' older brothers were gone, and he didn't usually have to pay to stay anywhere when he was back home. He didn't have to turn in a key, either. Maybe, now that he began to think about it, things were a bit different than he had originally thought, after all. There was Reese, though, and his therapy pokemon was a comfort to him in this new region, even if they didn't say anything and seemed lost in their own thoughts. Rhys wasn't much better, and the thought of his family made him jolt with the realization that he hadn't sent them anything in a while. They were probably worried sick by now. As he continued walking, he made the mental note to send them a message somehow once he got out of the lab.
Speaking of the lab, Rhys glanced towards the building that was slowly beginning to tower just ahead, trying to ignore just how nervous he was. If he got turned away because of Reese, that was just bad luck, right? Surely he'd be able to explain why the Rockruff was with him, if they didn't notice first thing. It wasn't exactly the hardest thing to spot, after all. Almost as if they noticed his concern, Reese stared up at him, giving their tail a small wag when he looked back down. Rhys glanced back up, towards the lab, trying to hide just how nervous he felt as he took those last few steps towards the doors. In just a few minutes, Rhys would, hopefully, be starting out in a new region with a starter to go along with this stage in his life. The thought of it was enough to make his heart start racing, and he swallowed heavily. "Here goes nothing." His muttered words were aimed towards Reese, although he doubted that the quiet Rockruff would be giving him an answer any time soon.
Trying to gather up his courage, he pushed the door open with one hand, and eased into the air conditioned room, the sudden change in temperature coming as bit of a shock compared to how hot it had been outside. Stopping, he realized just how lost he was. What was he supposed to do next? Did he just walk in and announce that he was here for a starter, or did having Reese with him make him a special case? Maybe someone would tell him if he was supposed to do it differently, so, he cleared his throat, speaking up and trying to make his voice strong despite how nervous he was still feeling.
"I'm here for a starter?"

| TAKE YOUR STEPS, BUT BE CAUTIOUS OF THE QUICKSAND HIDING THERE. DEEP, DISGUISED AS EVERYTHING YOU'VE EVER DREAMED OF.

'Keep an eye out for new trainers,' she said. 'Feed the baby Sevipers,' she said. Prof Liatris bloody well might have asked him to push the tide back a few hours, with how much progress he'd made. Victor grimaced as he held small chunks of berry over the box where the little snakes writhed, attempting to make sure each of them got an equal share while dodging the needle-like fangs of the more dominant ones. It was a slow process, made more difficult by the Pokemon irritably pulling at his hair, tactile fingers tugging it from its binding. And from is head. "Oh enough," he snapped, and the Chimchar quickly scramble down his knelt form. He nearly instantly regretted it, as she hovered a few feet away, visibly upset but too timid to run off into the lab. Victor sighed, sitting back away from the snakes and wiping his hands on his white coat. This was why he much preferred to be in the field - no feelings to hurt, no children to take care of. The Chimchar was relatively new, and though she absolutely loved people, her feelings were readily hurt. She was half scared of Victor to begin with, so snapping at her wasn't the most adult thing he could have done. The sound of the door opening around the corner gave him a way out, however. "I'm here for a starter?" came the uncertain voice, and Victor muttered 'dull' under his breath before standing. It wasn't that he had an issue with new trainers, it's just that... well, this whole indoors thing really wasn't his style. All of it was dull. "Go greet them, I'll be out in a minute, alright?" His voice was softer, perhaps a bit weary, and the Chimchar nodded her head furiously at the new 'responsibility'. Well, at least she rebounded quickly, even if she was sensitive. While Victor got himself cleaned up, the Chimchar did as she was told. She bolted, quite frantically, around the corner and into the main greeting area. There was a boy and a Pokemon, a Rockruff, and the Chimchar was visibly vibrating with excitement. < H-h-hi, w-welcome! > she eagerly pushed out, pushing right past the nervous stutter as if it didn't exist. If she thought it was at all weird that the boy had a Pokemon with him, it didn't show - honestly, she had no clue how any of this worked anyway, but she did know that she was likely to go home with a trainer at some point. That much she'd been told. Victor took that moment to walk up as well, hair returned to its tie and hands clean of (yet slightly stained with) purple berry. Unlike the young Pokemon, his eyes went immediately to the Rockruff before returning to the trainer, one brow raising in an arch. "I take it that one isn't for battle, then?" his tone was mild, presumptive. It was all he needed to know, honestly, so he was blunt as ever. As inclined as he was to be suspicious of people, the kid looked too nervous to be doing something wrong deliberately. In the small time he'd talked, the Chimchar had edged closer to the boy, reaching out slowly (as if she might not be seen that way) to try and touch the Rockruff. "No, that's rude," Victor said with a sigh just before the touch could land, and the small ape jumped back with an embarrassed squeak. She was young, but Victor wasn't inclined to facilitate bad manners. Luckily the Chimchar didn't get upset, realizing the implications, and she gave a meek 'sorry' to the other Pokemon. Baby steps. The next two will come soon :'D [googlefont=Open+Sans]
