It was warm. The sun was high, shining on the full leaves, casting a humidity in the air. Not so bad for some, perhaps, but Minske had lived for the last few months in Snowpoint City, where it was cold even in the summer. He'd misjudged the weather at his destination, which wasn't surprising - he hadn't been much focused at all in the last week. But he didn't want to think about that now. It's all he'd thought about since the funeral, and he was sick of it. Especially when he was here, on the threshold of the new path he'd chosen.
He'd wanted to turn around when he'd seen the Ranger Station signs. He'd made a mistake, he'd been too sentimental. He couldn't do this. But he had to, because what was he going to do? Board the plane again and leave? For once in his life, he didn't want to run from his problems. He'd made a decision and he was going to follow through. Even if it was a child futilely chasing his father's recently deceased memory.
Minske shrugged out of his jacket outside of the station door, willing to admit to himself that he was stalling. He shoved it into his large backpack - it was too warm for it, really - and looked at the door with some animosity. Like it was the enemy. Swallowing, Minske pulled the bag back on, stepping up to the door. It seemed too public a place to knock, but he opened the door slowly, respectfully peeking his head in. "Hello?" he called, stepping just inside the door and closing it behind him. He wasn't exactly nervous, but the whole situation seemed a bit surreal. He'd never thought he'd be a trainer. He'd wanted to be a doctor. But after his dad died... well, it was recent enough that it might just be an impulse that he'd get over, but for now it had completely rocked his life path.
If he wanted to understand the man, he had to do this. He wouldn't be a ranger, not yet, but there were steps that had to be taken. For now, he was willing to take them. "Can someone help me? I'm here for a Pokemon."

Sarah started to pipe up when the bell chimed and the greeting was called out into room, but had to continue squirming under the desk with the newborn ekans that had hatched at last. Some passing trainer had ditched it, something about an aversion to snakes and they’d been told it was a Delcatty only to later find out 1) no, not a Delcatty and 2) that was a final evolution and wouldn’t have come from an egg anyway. Some people had a lot to learn, and she couldn’t count how many random egg drops they’d had lately. Some stranger was just giving them out to people and telling them it was a surprise and they were just taking them. Unbelievable!
She finally managed to grab a pokeball from her belt and capture the baby without letting it wriggle loose, calling ”Here! Sorry! Just a sec!” as she did so before popping up, just a floating head behind the desk, ”Hello! A pokemon?” she said, smiling as she got shakily to her feet and slipped the pokeball into her shirt pocket. She’d find a foster mother for it in a biome later. For now she had a trainer to help! ”I’ve just got some paperwork for you here, my name is Sarah and I’ll be helping you this afternoon.” she handed over the clipboard with the forms and strode over to the chart with various symbols and colors notating which biomes were starter ready, which should be avoided, which she would need to make a trip to later for some general work.
The paperwork had a variety of questions such as whether they had ever had a Pokemon, and if so where was it now? What had happened to it, what was the nature of its role in the human’s life (companion, worker, battling, contests, etc.)? What plans did they have with the Pokemon they got today - what goals do they have over the course of the next few years? Will they be able to provide for the safety and well-being of any Pokemon they may receive? On and on. She spoke up, timing it to about the point she’d learned people got to the waiver, “The difference in getting a starter Pokemon here and the lab is all a matter of chance. Just about anything could pop up, and whatever happens by first is what you will potentially take home. There’s always the chance you’ll walk out empty handed, but the Ranger escort - that’d be me - is there to ensure no undue harm comes to you or the Pokemon.” she finished reciting her spiel, “Petunia, my pancham, is taking a nap down the hall but I’ll rouse her and we can head to the biomes as soon as you finish that. Do you have any questions for me before we go?”

The voice came from further into the room, behind a desk - and was soon followed by a head peeking up over the edge. She seemed a bit flustered, but she needn't be. The boy wasn't in a hurry, though he got the impression she was. "I'm Minske. Sorry for bothering you," he responded. He took the paperwork that was proffered with a polite smile, watching only briefly as she walked over to the board before turning to his task. It actually calmed him, taking his mind away from his jittery thoughts. For a minute, anyway. The questions themselves made him anxious in a different way, mostly because he wasn't used to being so unprepared for things. He strove to be prepared in general. Exams, tough conversations, everything. He spent stupid amounts of time trying to make sure he wouldn't look like an idiot. The only thing he hadn't prepared for was losing his dad, but even then he'd worked with a methodical air to deal with it. His decision to be a trainer though... that was probably stupid of him. Doctor. He'd wanted to be a doctor. But it just seemed like an impossible dream now, and he couldn't afford it anyway. With his dad's will, he could probably afford somewhere to live, but he definitely couldn't afford med school. This was the next logical step, and he had always loved Pokemon. Or at least, he'd been interested in learning more about them. Which was a good first step, right?
No previous Pokemon, his father had them though. No goals.... to travel? At least he could honestly say he could provide, with the money he did have. Wrong, wrong, wrong answers. But he wrote them down honestly, hoping he wouldn't be told to leave. He knew there were younger trainers that got Pokemon all the time, but logic didn't really take hold when he was so unsure of himself.
When she spoke, he was indeed flipping to the last page, with the information she mentioned. "That's fine," he replied, signing his name to the bottom. After all, he wouldn't know where to start anyway. Maybe if they just went with the first thing to come along, he could pretend it was some sort of fate. "No questions... or maybe there are too many to start asking? I haven't really done this before, but I should be okay if you walk me through it." He knew the theory, of course. But he wasn't going to pretend he had any clue what he was doing in the face of someone with way more experience either.
I got super busy this weekend, but whatever you can do is fine xP

She took the biome next in line for starters off the rotation so nobody doubled up while they were inside and listened as he replied to her questions. She accepted the paperwork and gave it a glance through as she stepped down the hall and motioned for him to follow. A quick rap of her knuckles on a door to rouse Petunia from her afternoon nap as Sarah went down each line of the form. He was young and inexperienced but what trainer wasn’t? She liked the look of him, and he’d been genuine and polite with her so far. She didn’t see any reason to suspect he lacked the ability to learn, at least. Yes, this would be quite the adventure for him and his companion! She gave a little smile as her own companion came toddling out of the room, the pancham knew the drill and even led them herself on down the hall to the elevators that went to the biomes. “The Mountainside.” she told Petunia, following her inside and leaning against the cool metal wall of the interior. “This biome is most similar to the one the ranger station itself is in, so it won’t be a major shock to your system at least.” she said, making conversation as the elevator whizzed up and away. Soon enough the doors on the other side shuddered open to a rocky landscape with a mountain to nowhere seeming to close them into a valley. Several large boulders and craggy foothills provided cover for any of the shyer Pokemon as the threesome walked over the gravely hard-packed earth. It wasn’t long at all before a blur of blue and red came careening around one of those boulders with a teeny trumpeted greeting. ”Oh! Phanpy! Cool~. Feel free to approach, he doesn’t seem to be aggressive. We’ll hang back but will step in if we’re needed.” she said, watching as he came to a skittering stop and very nearly toppled right over with the momentum of his heavy ears with their three bands of red, and the trunk with two of the same color. She started to give him a tip on how to get started but the pokemon had its own ideas as it tossed its head to shake some dust off and kicked a pebble with one of its front legs, seeking a game of some sort. < Play! > he demanded, letting loose another little trumpet. ✿ Junier of WW [newclass=.bbb-icon]margin: 0px; border: 10px solid #ffffff; width: 100px; height: 100px; -webkit-border-radius: 100%; -moz-border-radius: 100%;[/newclass] [newclass=.bbb-icon img] width: 100px; height: 100px; -webkit-border-radius: 100%; -moz-border-radius: 100%;[/newclass] [newclass=.bbb-txt] width: 200px; padding: 10px; margin-top: 40px; margin-bottom: 40px; color: #888; font-family: calibri; font-size: 10px; text-align: justify; [/newclass] kenren -- hhhhhh worked six nights before i got another one off X'3

Feeling a little self-conscious despite her reassurances, Minske was pretty quiet as they walked down the hall and into the elevator. He didn't waste the time, though, watching the Pancham with quite a bit of curiosity. The Pokemon his father had worked with were always, well, large. Things that could throw boulders and carry five people and the like. They hardly ever looked at him, let alone talk to him - not that he'd even seen them more than a handful of times. Most Pokemon he'd observed were from a distance. Apparently not every ranger had that sort of Pokemon, though, if the bear was any indication. He'd bet it couldn't even lift one person. There, he was learning already. He smiled at her comment in the elevator, but it was more nervous now, the closer they got to their destination. Normally he was chatty enough, but now he found his mouth was dry as ash. He was normally such a confident person... but he was so far out of his league that he wasn't sure he knew up from down anymore.
The elevator opened, and curiosity overcame his uncertainty. The craggy landscape was indeed similar to the bits he'd seen outside of the station, but his experience on the ground here had been very limited so far. So it was still a bit of a shock, as it were. He'd hardly had time to take everything in before motion drew his attention sharply. A blue creature, small but looking incredibly stout, rounded a boulder and nearly knocking itself over after a bright noise toward them. Phanpy, Sarah said, though he couldn't say that it helped him any. He was so painfully ignorant about everything, but he decided that was fine. Because even if he didn't know anything about the blue elephant, it didn't mean that he wasn't interested in learning. "Okay," he replied to the woman, before taking a few steps forward to the creature. It flopped its ears about, dust unsettling from its hide, before kicking a pebble in his direction. Smiling, Minske squatted down in front of it, feeling a bit more in his element.
"I'd love to play, but I don't know the rules. Can you explain them to me?" Maybe he was being overly cautious, but he wanted to do this right. He didn't want to upset it. And since he didn't know what he was doing, and what might cause offense... well, baby steps.
I am SO EXCITED FOR PHANPY aaaaaaaa <3

This was a game he often played with his siblings and friends, and it was one of his favorites. If this person couldn’t have fun and play a simple kick the rock game well...maybe that bear would play instead, or the girl with her in the official looking clothes he always saw people in here wearing when they came by to check on them. He pawed at the ground a little, clearing the path in front of him of any other loose stones that would deter the rock that he hoped would be coming his way. There really wasn’t much else around here but rocks, so they had to get creative with their games. He was more than willing to share this knowledge with the human boy, as he could always use more playmates. Sarah watched with interest, remembering which Phanpy of the herd this was now. She’d recognized his distinct features but hadn’t put the personality to the appearance until just now. A pleased smile graced her features as she settled onto a flat-topped rock a few yards away to watch the game. This was a good match, she could tell already. Hopefully Minske had a successful enough interaction with the tyke. ✿ Junier of WW [newclass=.bbb-icon]margin: 0px; border: 10px solid #ffffff; width: 100px; height: 100px; -webkit-border-radius: 100%; -moz-border-radius: 100%;[/newclass] [newclass=.bbb-icon img] width: 100px; height: 100px; -webkit-border-radius: 100%; -moz-border-radius: 100%;[/newclass] [newclass=.bbb-txt] width: 200px; padding: 10px; margin-top: 40px; margin-bottom: 40px; color: #888; font-family: calibri; font-size: 10px; text-align: justify; [/newclass] kenren

To his relief, the Phanpy did not get angry at his ignorance. Instead, it gave him the very clear directive, and went on to clear the playing field, as it were. It seemed excited, bouncing a bit, though its attention seemed to flicker between Minske and those behind him. Minske felt himself shift before he even thought about it, very subtly putting himself between the Phanpy and the others. A bit juvenile, perhaps, but he didn't want to lose the Phanpy's attention when he'd just gotten it. It was actually a bit endearing to him, actually, how straightforward the little creature was. It was refreshing. He seemed to remember his father's Pokemon being more talkative, even if not to him, as well as the Pokemon he'd casually encountered on the street. It was almost like some sort of fate, that he'd met a Pokemon that he really felt confident with. He could have so easily become intimidated, but the Phanpy was so genuine and open that he felt himself being so easily drawn in.
"Alright," he said, standing. "Kick it is, then." He tapped the pebble with the side of his boot, just hard enough to send it skittering toward the Phanpy. It was a little off the mark, skipping to the right, but the game had begun.
I thought about just having him talk to him but let's be honest, a game of kick-the-rock is the best bonding.

He and his family communicated with a wide array of trumpets and snorts and whistles rather than pokespeech. But he’d practiced enough with the rangers who had raised him in captivity with his parents to be able to communicate with the human boy. He gave a bugle of glee as the boy played along and kicked back. < Good kick! > he enthusiastically complimented. Sarah couldn’t help but to give a couple of claps herself. Petunia muttered something about it being off course but Sarah quickly silenced her with a stick of bamboo and let the two continue with their game. Phanpy walked precariously sideways to line up with the rock’s new location, picking it up with his trunk and sweeping his ears furiously from side to side to clear an even bigger space for them before lifting his trunk and shooting the gravel straight up into the air, < Catch! > he instructed while the blinding sun overhead made it impossible to see the rock at its highest ascension. The little red and blue pachyderm held his breath and waited to see if the boy could catch. These were the two most important games. Even if he didn’t do it, he supposed he could teach him. < Catch!!! > he repeated frantically as it looked like it was going to come down on his head. Humans were probably very fragile on their head meats and he didn’t want him to be hurt! Petunia spat the bamboo stick out, Right hand side! she called, hoping that helped him. ✿ Junier of WW [newclass=.bbb-icon]margin: 0px; border: 10px solid #ffffff; width: 100px; height: 100px; -webkit-border-radius: 100%; -moz-border-radius: 100%;[/newclass] [newclass=.bbb-icon img] width: 100px; height: 100px; -webkit-border-radius: 100%; -moz-border-radius: 100%;[/newclass] [newclass=.bbb-txt] width: 200px; padding: 10px; margin-top: 40px; margin-bottom: 40px; color: #888; font-family: calibri; font-size: 10px; text-align: justify; [/newclass] kenren

If nothing else, the Phanpy appreciated his efforts, even if others did not. His little trumpets of sound made Minske laugh, as did his ear-flaring antics to clear the field. Minske didn't know a whole lot about these things, but the Phanpy's idle shows of strength and awareness appealed to him. Even if it was normal, his experience let him be impressed. The Phanpy picked up the pebble in his trunk this time, going off-script already, but Minske put his hands on his knees in as prepared a stance as he could muster. The small elephant threw the pebble high in the air, and Minske's eyes immediately tracked it. Which was kind of a mistake, because he had to throw his arm over his eyes to shield them from the sun. It was happening very quickly, so he just reacted, throwing his hand out inadvertently in the direction that the Pancham dictated. There were black spots in his vision as he tried to find the projectile.
Strictly speaking, Minske was not an athletic type. Hand-eye coordination wasn't necessarily his strong suit. He was in good enough shape, but he excelled more in exercise of the mind. Which meant, more than anyone, he was surprised when he snatched the pebble from where it fell from above him. He laughed a little, surprised, and smiled lopsidedly at the Phanpy. "Beginner's luck," he said, wiggling the pebble between thumb and forefinger. Deciding to just go ahead and dive in, Minske asked, "So, have you ever thought about leaving here? Seeing the world?" The Phanpy had seemed to understand them pretty well, but he couldn't really know if it would understand the concept of a great horizon out there. He wasn't going to underestimate it, though. Shifting his grip on the pebble, he tossed it back to the sturdy creature.

You did! > he bounced in place, flapping his ears and kicking up the dust all over again. When Minske tossed the pebble back he caught it deftly with his trunk once more. And then realized he’d asked him a question and paused to ruminate on an answer. < Am allowed? > he asked, peering around the boy to the girl beyond him. Sarah chuckled and nodded, ”Yep, if you want. Minske here is a trainer and he needs a starting Pokemon. Do you think you’d like to go with him?” Phanpy tossed the pebble, flipping it only a little bit into the air and letting it land. It landed moss side up and he flicked his stubby tail, < Moss! Is other game. > he advised Minske, taking three cautious steps forward to stand at his feet. < Moss was the yeah. So I go! > he proclaimed, his eyes squinching shut as he smiled and lifted his trunk to bump the boys hand in a conspiratorial greeting he’d seen humans do. male - 05 - phanpy pickup Odor Sleuth - Tackle - Growl - Defense Curl Mutation: It's as if the Phanpy got a +1 for its extra bits (3 red ear bands not 2, 2 red bands on trunk not 1, 2 toenails not 1). This leads to him having a bit more difficulty walking and sometimes if he loses his balance he tips forward from the added weight on his head. This can lead some to believe he's quite clumsy and accident prone but it's quite the contrary, he's very dexterous when he's standing still - adept at using his trunk as pachyderms tend to be - and tries his best to be careful when he's moving so that he doesn't fall. However, accidents do happen. And when they do he's more apt to roll with it and laugh it off, and is good at turning many mundane things in his life into a game. This comes from a babyhood in a rocky terrain with nothing but stones and his family and friends to keep him occupied - his imagination can come in handy. He's also had to learn to be unselfish since resources were scarce and will usually be the first in a group to invite strangers in to play or split his snack down the middle to make sure his companions don't go hungry. He's got a good grasp of understanding humans and general pokespeech but his own speech is developing a little more slowly from lack of practice.
