| "CHAMP"
Champ had been a tad frazzled by his start at the ranger outpost. Not only had he walked out with no starter pokemon, he had realized that his Growlithe could be considered a starter. He felt almost bad he hadn't realized that from the beginning but his father had hammered home the idea that you had to start at the ranger outpost or lab. There was simply no other way.
Yet here he was, walking the long dirt road of route one. The large grassy fields surrounded him on both sides, turning brown as the weather cooled. Champ didn't mind the temperature, in fact, it just meant he could just snuggle deeper into the thick Mareep wool jacket he wore. It was his fathers, given to him at seventeen when he received the egg that held the Growlithe that trotted along in step with him. His father had told him the jacket was perfect for tucking the egg inside to help keep it warm.
And Champ had done just that. He almost didn't take the jacket off during the whole incubation period. It was funny to him now, looking back. The sleeves then had hung past his hands and now sat comfortably at his wrists. It was one of the few things he had taken from home and he wouldn't admit it out loud but this was one of his prized possessions.
Shaking his head to clear himself of thoughts of his father and the eventual burn of tears that would follow, he chose to instead focus on the dying fields around him. "What say you Growlithe, shall we head into the grass and see who we can find?" He asked his pokemon, pointing towards the field to his left that seemed slightly less overgrown that the one to his right.
Growlithe yipped happily and wagged the large ploof that was his tail. "Alright, time to go find us our first pokemon!" He said with a hint of hesitation. This was really it, wasn't it? His first few steps to become the very best. Champ looked skyward, wondering for the millionth time if his father was looking down on him. If he was all Champ could do was hope he was making him proud.
With long confident strides the young man stepped into the tall grass, excited for his first true wild pokemon encounter.

| "CHAMP"
Growlithe was the first one to spot the Poochyena. What had started as a happy trot next to Champ turned into a mad dash through the tall grass as Champ stared on perplexed. The fire type bounded up to the Poochyena who was barking and skipping happily around a an odd object half buried in the grass.
By the time Champ had caught up to his pokemon, Growlithe was following the Poochyena in an almost dance around the odd object. "Uh, what?" Champ couldn't help but question as he came closer, kneeling down to get a better look at the object. The two canines stopped their eradicate and dizzying dance around it to stare up at Champ.
Before him was an egg, half buried in the ground. It was clearly a pokemon egg, laid there with care by who knows who. Champ immediately looked around, hoping he hadn't stumbled upon the nest of some unseen pokemon. When it became apparent he was alone and no one was bum rushing him for being close to the egg, Champ found himself a little dumbstruck.
This was exactly how he did not expect his first encounter to go. Growlithe and Poochyena were sitting next to each other, playfully snapping at one another, occasionally growling. Their tails never stopped wagging, beating the ground below them and he was now before what appeared to be an... Abandoned egg? "Is this yours?" Champ asked, running his finger along the off yellow shell and looking at the pokemon.
<"Nope!"> He replied with an almost giggling bark, <"Is it yours?">
Champ shook his head at the pokemon's response. How could it be his if he just found it? Poochyena stood up and walked over to Champ, nosing the egg. <"It's been here for awhile. I haven't seen any parents coming for it and if you listen just right,"> Poochyena laid his ear against the egg, Growlithe mimicking his moves, <"You can tell it's getting close to hatching.>" He explained.
The Poochyena shrugged, pulling his head away from the egg and looked back towards Champ, <"I suppose it can be left here, I'm just worried about it getting eaten. I've seen quite a few Ekans in this area lately, and you know how they are with eggs.">
Growlithe listened intently, nodding along seriously as his new friend spoke. Champ felt himself becoming a tad flustered and ran his hand through his thick blond hair. Champ was in no way looking to take eggs along with him, he was a trainer after all not a breeder. Looking into the duo's eyes he suddenly felt a heaviness in his chest as he remembered his time spent nurturing Growlithe's egg. It hadn't been hard, just a tad tedious.
As the two canines looked up at him expectantly Champ felt his mind made up for him. With the inquisitive look of the Poochyena and the concerned look of his own Growlithe, he couldn't just leave. Still Champ felt himself feeling a bit weird about the whole thing. His first encounter was supposed to be an epic first battle on his way to stardom, not grabbing some mystery egg from the ground.
"I guess we can't just leave it here." Champ finally said, scooping the egg from its' half buried spot and bringing it to his chest. The Poochyena let out a joyous howl, springing from his spot and skipping around Champ.
As Champ watched, bemused at erratic dance of the Poochyena he couldn't help but laugh, this sure was an odd pokemon. With one last leap into the air, ending with the dark type tumbling before Champ he suddenly stood up straight and gave Champ an unwavering look, <"But you're not taking it without me. I've watched over that egg for awhile now and it's only fair if I continue to do so.">
The sudden seriousness from the Poochyena took both Champ and Growlithe off guard by the unexpected shift in both tone and demeanor. Catching a pokemon, especially his first one, shouldn't be so easy. But from the determined pooch's stance and words showed that it was.
Gently shimming his backpack off his back, he let it fall to the ground. Fishing around in a side pocket he pulled out an empty pokeball. "Are you sure? Just like that?" Champ asked, clicking the center button to cause it to enlarge.
The Poochyena broke into a smile, his tongue lolling out of his mouth as he nodded. "Alright, in you go then." Champ said, tossing the pokeball in the direction of the dark type. Poochyena jumped up, clicking his heels as the pokeball tapped his fur and sucked him in with a flash of red light.
Word Count: 783 OOC: fitz, sorry for the delay in replies. I wanted to say thank you for spawning this particular pokemon with this personality. It's a literal perfect fit for Champ and his team as well as allowing me to kinda impose his new egg into this thread. Growlithe | 03 | Intimidate | Bite & Roar | Exp 000/150 Quick Summary - Champ meets Poochyena, finds the Mankey Egg (which is a "mystery egg" to him until hatching) and is convinced to catch Poochyena so he can guard over the egg. +1 Mankey Egg thread, -1 Pokeball, subtracted from PC
