[ ] larvitar - fourth thread The beach had blue ones. The forest had green ones. Now the plains had red ones. Somehow, this was strange, but also sort of interesting, while also remaining absolutely none of his business. It wasn't as if he was getting paid to pick up the gems but he heard if you collected enough of them you could get a pretty sweet something from the pedestal guardians... shit, is that what they were called? Guardians? No, merchants, right? Yeah. Why did he think Guardians? Either way, Kaneda was interested to see what the stupid rewards might be. So here he was, egg tucked into his shirt - that part of it that puffed out slightly just above his belt. It sort of made him look pregnant, but his shirt was open enough that one could see the little girl egg that was separate from his skin. From far off though? He probably looked like a pregnant woman... what with his long hair and all. But Kaneda couldn't have honestly cared less. Bending over, he placed his hand on the egg to keep it secure, picking up one of the gems and looking it over. He closed his left eye and looked through the gem while moving it into the sunlight. Nothing in the middle, not that he could see. Looked like a little marble. He brushed his thumb over some of the nicks and scratches. "Huh."gems. 5 words. 238 notes. huzzah! Savage

| "CHAMP" Champ had opted to travel on foot to the ranger out post. It seemed like a more rugged option, one his father would have approved of. Despite his mother's insistent he take any other form of travel, the young man had thrown his travel pack on and headed out the door.
By his side was his faithful Growlithe. The dog pokemon had loved the journey, happy to see his trainer done grieving and back onto their goal of being the best there was. The hike had been a good start for the man, helping him clear his head and reaffirm his drive. Something about nature had always been calming for him, and he remembered the days when he and his father would sleep outside in the various routes, around a campfire. Most of his early knowledge had come from those nights - his father telling him stories of pokemon and naming them as they would cross his path.
As the thought of his father crossed his mind, Champ felt his eyes stinging. He was not here to mourn his father, he was on his way to the out post. After about a week they had made their way to route five, a rather interesting place. The grass would crackle with static as you walked through it, leaving both Growlithe and Champ with hair that stood on its' ends.
Although it was fairly straightforward Champ had chosen to take a detour towards the odd red pedestal he had heard about in the past town he had stayed in to restock. No one seemed quite sure what it was about and eventually his own curiosity won out.
Coming down the slope, finding the pedestal hidden under a mass of tall grass. Little red gems seemed to litter the ground, causing his steps to crunch as he walked. Another man was nearby, bending over to grab one of the various glittery shards all over the ground.
Growlithe barked curiously, bounding over to Kaneda and nosing his leg curiously. Champ quickly caught up, pulling the Growlithe back by his collar. "Heh, sorry about that buddy. He gets real excited meeting strangers." Champ said apologetically, letting Growlithe go as he backed up and sat down dutifully by his trainer's feet.
Champ saw the little red gem in Kaneda's head and realized he had picked up one of them from the ground. "Say buddy, what's up with those? They're everywhere."

[ ] larvitar - fourth thread Far too drawn into his own thoughts concerning a damned marble, Kaneda didn't even notice the Growlithe that came sniffing up his leg. A small part of him had to mentally stop himself from bolting or thinking up an alibi. Why? Because back in Johto these adorable little pups were used by policemen- which meant that Kaneda could have been caught. Red handed, judging by the color of the gem in his hand. Not that he did anything wrong blowing up the Game Corner- not that he thought so, anyway. But some people were still sour about it... Either way, seeing the blonde kid - young man? - had Kaneda's shoulder's relaxing and a bit of the tension leaving his frame. He let something like a smirk tug at the corners of his mouth as he watched the Growlithe do as it was told. Well done pup. That was the only thought he spared toward the two that wasn't spoken aloud. "No worries, he's a good pup." Kaneda encouraged the blonde, looking from him to the gem in his hand. He tossed it up only to catch it a moment later. "Y'know, I was just thinkin' the same thing. I haven't really figured it out, other than they're being used as a sort of currency to win rewards at the pedestals." His eyes fell down to the Growlithe. "Get yourself a firestone for your pup."gems. 10 words. 251 notes. Savage

| "CHAMP" As the dark haired man spoke, Growlithe wagged his tail. The earthy thump as it hit the ground was a nice break in between the occasional crackle of static from the nearby grass. Growlithe would look excitedly back and forth between Kaneda and Champ as they spoke.
"Currency, huh?" Champ said curiously, bending down and scooping up a large red gem. It wasn't as even or smooth as the one Kaneda had in his hand. Champ took a moment to enjoy the weight of it in his palm, rolling it back and forth as he held it.
"I heard the people in Shaula talking about this pedestal. It's actually why I kinda took this detour. I'm on my way to the ranger outpost you see, gonna become a ranger with Growlithe here," Champ began, as if the stranger had asked him why he was here, "Figured this would be a nice detour. I hadn't realized I might actually get something out of it, however." He finished, shooting a glance at Growlithe. He hadn't had his pokemon that long, and had spent even less time training him but... The thought of having a huge evolved beast so early into his quest was quite appealing.
Champ pocketed the gem and knelt down to scoop up another, "I'm Eric, by the way, but you can call me Champ." He said, smiling up at Kaneda, "Perhaps you and I can mine some of these gems for a bit, company is always nice!"

[ ] larvitar - fourth thread What a ball of sunshine he'd stumbled upon. Between the eager Growlithe listening to their every word and 'Champ's' openness for conversation, he couldn't help but relax a bit. While the kid was becoming a ranger and the idea of Kaneda being found terrified him, he also didn't mind because the kid wasn't a ranger yet and that meant he wouldn't be suspicious. Well, not yet. Seemed he wasn't terribly judgemental. Or maybe Kaneda was the type of guy who people judged opposite of how he actually was. A sort of social chameleon. "It ain't bad." In reference to appreciating the company. "Kaneda, by the way." He introduced, watching as the kid bent down to get more gems. He probably should have made more of an effort to bend down and pick up a gem or two, but he found himself not wanting to accidentally scramble his egg. So instead, he leaned back with one hand on his hip and watched as the kid searched. "You and I have that in common- about getting a starter, I mean. Gonna avoid the ranger station and head for the lab... 'cause, why not." he admitted, rolling his shoulders. He felt a bit like he probably should have been helping... which led him to squat down with the kid and start picking up some of the gems. gems. 15 words. 240 notes. Savage

| "CHAMP" "Kaneda's a pretty cool name." Champ said, too busy with sifting through the earth to extend his own hand. Later on Champ would remember that moment and remember angrily he had forgotten. A good handshake was a hallmark of a man, or so his father had taught.
Champ was oblivious to the man's tension or the eventual lack thereof as the spoke. All he knew is Kaneda was willing to talk and seemed friendly enough. And Growlithe had been more than happy to greet him so he didn't even suspect anything was off with him.
"The lab over the ranger station? I can understand that. I've read up on the general procedure of how you get pokemon with the rangers. Gotta catch 'em and all. The lab just sort of hands them out, right?" Champ said, although he didn't pause for an answer, "That's why I want to go to the ranger station. Start out my journey right by proving I'm worth catching a pokemon."
Growlithe yipped curiously at the comment, having stopped imitating his trainer by digging in the dirt nearby. "I didn't catch you, silly. I hatched you." He said with a grin, eyeing up the bulge in Kaneda's shirt as he bent down to help scoop up gems. "Which is what I'm assuming you're doing with that guy in there, right? Do you know what it is?" Champ was sure a chatterbox today. To be fair, he didn't have the most social childhood and since the failing health and death of his father he had lost the few friends he had managed to make over the years. Finding someone close to his age to talk to had been rare and he couldn't quite stop the words from spilling from his mouth.

[ ] larvitar - fourth thread There was a part of Kaneda that wondered if he would get that sort of connection with his starter. He assumed he would. Every other Pokemon he had gotten in a team had always become very close to him. Even the damned Furret.... crazy little son of a bitch is what that thing was. However, seeing Growlithe playfully yip at Champ and watching Champ respond so quickly had Kaneda wondering if he could hear the Pokemon talk. It was something most everybody who came to Inset - or at least those he had run into thus far - seemed to be able to do. Immediately he was jarred from his thoughts at the mention of the egg tucked away in his shirt. A nod later, he was moving a hand habitually over the egg, rubbing it. He probably looked like a pregnant woman... but he didn't much care. "That's exactly what I'm up to. I've got no idea what gender or anything, but I know the species is a Larvitar by the markings on the egg." He smiled brightly at the prospect. Because Tyranitars were badass and he couldn't wait to meet this little badass... "I'm a little bias," he started. "But I'm excited about it because it's of Johto." A grin slipped his features and he was plopping down onto the ground, holding the egg secure to make sure it didn't bounce around or anything of the sort. "And that happens to be my favorite region, so." Pity he could never return... that sorrow wasn't shown. Instead, it was tucked away to be dealt with at another time. gems. 20 words. 285 notes. | "CHAMP" As the worked, Growlithe was doing his best to dig up as many gems as he could with his paws. Nearby was a small pile of the ruby colored gems nearby. Occasionally as he dug holes around the area he would use his mouth to toss one gem to the side to add to the pile. Champ had managed to start filling his pockets with the abundant mess. Although he had heard he could exchange them for a fire stone, he had no concept of their worth. Clearly if they were all here scattered around they must not be worth much.
"A Larvitar?" Champ parroted as Kaneda protectively ran his hand over the lump in his shirt. He remembered that particular pokemon from a fairly awesome battle his dad and him had watched once. In fact, he distinctly remembered betting against the unevolved pokemon only to be surprised by the ferocity of it in the championship that was being televised. "Those guys are pretty awesome. Strong pokemon for being so little. Do you happen to know what you want to be? I'm a trainer." He said proudly, squaring his shoulder, "Gonna be the very best."
If anyone was looking at Growlithe they would have seen him do the same, squaring his shoulder to imitate his trainer. "But I could totally peg you for a researcher or even a breeder. You got that like, kinda super smart look to you." He rambled on, "Favorite region, eh? Is it safe to assume you aren't from Inset? I generally find those who aren't don't favor this region."

[ ] larvitar - fourth thread There was no denying the pride in hearing that Champ also thought that Larvitar was a badass. Kaneda had always thought of them as badasses as well, but to find that a Trainer agreed with him was empowering. Most people thought the pseudo-legendary first stage was like, cheating if you got it as a starter. Because of its high defense, and most beginner moves being 'tackle' and 'scratch.' But Kaneda loved that about it. Mostly because the high defense had him not having to worry about the Pokemon constantly needing to have potions used to keep fighting. He always felt that even with a dose or two of potion, a Pokemon must have gotten exhausted. And Larvitars? They were like fucking tanks, could just keep going, so long as they ate some dirt in between battles... and not in the metaphorical sense. Kaneda hadn't thought about what he wanted to be, besides being 'free' and being off the grid. "Uh... well, Trainer I guess?" Because if he was a Trainer he could accomplish both of those things. "Don't know that I plan on having a vast team, maybe four tops. I'm more of a loner. My first go-round as a Trainer, I had like, maybe three? The fourth got swapped in and out constantly because I couldn't make up my mind."A laugh escaped him as he took a few gems himself, digging a small hole in front of him and beginning to gauge whether the egg would fit in it or not. "But uh, as far as region, no I'm not local. I'm from Johto, actually. So. A Little bit biased with it being my favorite and everything. Inset's a close second. But that could just be because of the opportunities it's provided me so far."gems. 25 (+100, because next post makes ten total posts) words. 313 notes. | "CHAMP" Champ paused his work to listen to Kaneda speak about his goals and aspirations. He couldn't help but be a little curious about why Kaneda had abandoned his first go around as a trainer and moved to the Inset reason. Briefly he wondered if perhaps the man was trying to escape something in his past, much like Champ was. Little did he know the huge difference in scenarios; Champ was trying to become the very best trainer possible to drown out the pain of his father's death while Kaneda was running from quite a troubled past.
"That's a pretty good strategy actually. Going to focus on training them quicker instead of trying to train up a whole team. Did you have a particular type you wanted to specialize in? Or perhaps just go for a tanky team, kinda like your little egg there?" Champ mused out loud, running through the various team line ups that were possible. He hadn't quite thought of his own line up. He had a loose idea of what he wanted - fire types, dragon types and something fighting maybe. Those were normally strong offensive types.
And then Champ couldn't quite help himself from asking what Kaneda seemed to be dancing around. "Say, why did you leave your first team and Johto? I've seen the pictures and it's a really pretty place." Even Growlithe seemed curious, walking over to sniff at the hole Kaneda had been digging.
