He could do it. He could manage to get through this. He could go to the ranger station and get a Pokemon of his own... Why was this a big deal? So glad you asked. Sam has always relied on his Professor's Pokemon in the past. Being an assistant to the Professor back in Kalos, he was used to simply doing whatever the Professor needed within the lab. He helped give trainers starts, he helped people with their oddities and questions concerning their Pokemon, he read data, he went over papers and theories-- you know, all those things lackies assistants do for their professors. Needless to say going out and catching a Pokemon instead of taking the donations from other trainers or the Pokemon offered from breeding ranches, he was going to get a Pokemon of his very own all by himself. Well, with the help from a ranger, he'd been told. That was actually a bit of a relief. He had called ahead and scheduled an appointment. He was there five minutes early just in case he had to sign something or fill out paperwork. Making his way over to the front desk of the Main Outpost's desk, he smiled politely at whoever was behind the desk and glanced around. Once he saw a sign in sheet, he signed his name and leaned back to glance the sheet over. Arrival time. Appointment time. Once finished, he moved over and took a seat in one of the chairs, tapping his fingers on his knees... he could do this. He'd be fine. Famous last words.» 270 » @staff » excuse the derp made by wizz

He seemed like a bit of an awko taco - surprisingly a lot of the people who opted to go the ranger route were. She didn’t quite know the appeal herself. She’d gone the old fashioned route several years ago when she’d picked her starter - a timid but strong Torchic whom she’d named Todd. He was still in his starting form, she hadn’t been able to cope with having him evolve and be bigger than holdable huggable chick size. But maybe people liked the idea of the unknown, of the possibility that came with getting a ranger starter! She was sure that was the same reason so many were nervous. Maybe they thought they’d encounter something with too big of a personality to take on, or too small and end up with what they may consider a dud. Whatever their reasoning, it was a common enough thing that she was more than used to now. ”Alrighty Sam, it’s time for you to go to a biome. I won’t waste your time with an interview, after all, you’re here and it’s up to Lady Fate what you end up with when you go into the area. We’ve got the cliffs biome ready now if you’ll just follow me.” she’d of course checked in with the professor in Kalos to check his credentials before he’d arrived and found it to be suitable enough to take care of any questions they would normally have of Joe Schmoe off the street. She walked down a long hallway before stopping at an elevator. Todd came running up to stand with her as they waited for Sam to join them. Once on the elevator they zoomed up to the biome built on an artificial mountainside with soaring cliffs jutting out overhead. The ground was hard packed and rubble littered the landscape. Any minute now his potential starter would make its appearance. And what an appearance it made….. Out of nowhere a blurr of blue leapt from the nearest cliff, arms outspread even as it plummeted to the earth. A tiny roar of frustration was all they would hear before it cracked a rock in two with its hard head, sitting up and shaking it off. ”Oh…” Maggie breathed, eyes wide before she cleared her throat, ”Sam, this is….Bagon.” she said, picking Todd up and stepping back to give them room to chat or...whatever. Bagon turned at her voice and came charging up to the trio, head down with intent to land a blow. ✿ Junier of WW [newclass=.bbb-icon]margin: 0px; border: 10px solid #ffffff; width: 100px; height: 100px; -webkit-border-radius: 100%; -moz-border-radius: 100%;[/newclass] [newclass=.bbb-icon img] width: 100px; height: 100px; -webkit-border-radius: 100%; -moz-border-radius: 100%;[/newclass] [newclass=.bbb-txt] width: 200px; padding: 10px; margin-top: 40px; margin-bottom: 40px; color: #888; font-family: calibri; font-size: 10px; text-align: justify; [/newclass]

The girl behind the desk called his name and it caused him to look up from the magazine in his hands. He'd read about the biome's and was excited to see them in action. Kalos had a few, but they were mostly used for silly adventures you took children on. So what he might have gone on a few of them. It was purely to see how they worked, alright? It was purely for research purposes...
Sam followed her into the elevator. "If it's up to Lady Fate, I'm definitely going to have a fun time." Because his luck sucked... the small clawing of little feet behind him had him smiling down at the little Torchic that came running along with them into the elevator. What a cute little bird. If he looked hard enough he might be able to tell gender on whether or not it had a small spot on it's rear or not. Then he realized where he would be looking and quickly gave the woman a small smile before looking way completely. No need to decide gender, his urge of curiosity wasn't great enough be considered a creep, so...
The cliffs were magnificent as they typically were in these biomes. The one he had visited before had been a lush forest and a brilliant beach. So, this was new. He'd visited the cliffs back on route 7 near the connecting cave. There weren't a lot of cliffs there, but enough that he needed to survey and write down some data about the flux of zubats. Matching breeding patterns with weather patterns and all that mess.
Every thought in his mind was jarred and discarded when he heard something smack into the ground. He jumped, glancing over at the Bagon who'd caused the noise. His eye were widened as he stared blankly at it. "Uh... haha." A laugh slowly formed. "Of course." It couldn't be something simple, like a Zubat, or a Geodude - he'd sparred with one once and had a few moves hidden. No, it had to be a whimsical, territorial, Bagon.
Screw you too Lady Fate.
When the receptionist introduced the Bagon, Sam swallowed hard. "Wonder if he's a gentle giant sort." And there it was, Sam's sarcasm at the most opportune moment. As the Bagon lowered it's head and started it's charge, Sam winced. This was gonna hurt, but he needed to do something. He couldn't just let the Bagon hit him. Dodging was probably his best bet? Maybe... he could try and trip it up to get it distracted, but he might offend the thing. Instead, he dodged and watched as the Bagon whirled past them. He blinked down and over at it. "Wow... you're really pissed about the not flying thing." This one seemed to have a lot of pent up rage. Sam could understand that.
Clearing his throat, so the Bagon could hear him, he gave it a charming smile. "Hi-yah there." Well that sounded less confident than he wished it had. "Having fun smashin' rocks, buddy?" He pulled a face, like wondering what the hell he was even doing trying to reason with this thing. It would just try and bash into him... but maybe it wanted somebody to rant at? Sam often had the need to rant, so.» 640 » fitz» poor sam. I cannot breathe. he can't catch a break! made by wizz

Since he wasn’t falling from a great height this time it only cracked the enormous rock instead of splitting it down the middle and he reeled back from it in frustration, flailing and flapping his arms. He wheeled to look back at the man and gave a grunt of annoyance when he commented on the whole flying thing, snorting as if to say “ya think?”. It seemed he didn’t quite have the hang of speaking yet - he could understand the humans but between the constant self-inflicted head trauma and general lack of exposure he wasn’t fluent enough to communicate his thoughts and feelings back to them. Yet another source of unending frustration for him. The unwinged dragon scraped the gravelly ground underfoot staring at his feet that were strong and carried him where he needed to go, helped him leap off of cliffs with ease as the thought that maybe this time he would fly. And then his stubby arms, useless and barely seen under his enormous noggin. He felt so awkward and clumsy and out of his element when he knew he was destined to soar. To be majestic and graceful and weightless. And he couldn’t tell them any of that. And it sucked. So he just shrugged and smacked a smaller rock with his head to emphasize the point. Yep, that’s me. Love smashin rocks. Todd hopped down from Maggie’s lap and skipped over to stand to the side of Sam and Bagon - what they needed was a translator! That’s all! He gave a few chirps to Bagon, whose eyes’ lit up with something other than rage for the first time since they’d seen him trying to run them down, then turned to Sam, < He wants to know what you’re doing here in his territory? He says...you broke his concentration. That he saw us just as he was jumping and that’s why he didn’t fly. > Bagon frowned as the Torchic took artistic liberty with what he’d actually said - Dumb humans messed me up, why are they even here?.

The moment he heard that snort, Sam understood very clearly what he was trying to say, and it had him smiling. He'd used sarcasm and the Bagon had used it right back! Somehow, that was both intriguing, and absolutely brilliant, all at the same moment. It fueled Sam to learn more, and as the Bagon tried to communicate and failed, Sam furrowed his brows. Because in some way, he would be able to understand him. He just hadn't fully learned how to talk yet, either because he couldn't or because he didn't have the opportunities to practice. Which was perfectly fine with Sam. He'd run into the same situation multiple times in the wild, and sometimes at the Pokemon Center with Pokemon donated for research back home. The moment the Torchic made his way over, Sam watched the two Pokemon communicate. It had Sam immediately thinking that perhaps he should get a translator Pokemon directly after this, through some means, before heading out. Because one thing was for sure, he wasn't leaving this dome without that Bagon. He felt a connection to it he honestly couldn't explain. At Torchic's words Sam's dark brows lifted. So he was right, the Bagon did need translation. He bent down to be eye level with the Bagon. "I'm here to see if you wanted to take a journey with me." A smile crossed his face and he held it, tilting his head slightly. "It might not be in your territory, but I can guarantee you'll get strong enough during the journey to fly sky high."It wasn't an empty promise, you could tell by the way Sam said it. He had a confidence in his voice, Bagon had inspired him. Maybe this whole 'research' thing would work out, but so far, he was being inspired to help this Bagon grow and achieve it's dream. Because, in a way, Sam saw himself in the Bagon. Unable to really get himself across. Embarrassed by himself. He wanted to help this Bagon understand what he could never fully convince himself of. "Because you can definitely do it..." He tilted his head to the other side and hummed. "With a little help and a lot of determination, which you so have."» 430 » fitz » awe, this bagon reminds me of my niece. a dragon who gets frustrated and can't communicate well, I'm in luv.

It was more than a small comfort to know he wasn’t being written off, or that his dreams and struggles weren’t being looked over and dismissed, just because he couldn’t say them in a way these people would understand. The torchic hopped back as Sam leaned in to speak to Bagon, now that he knew the other Pokemon could understand the human at least. And he gave an encouraging chirp as Sam cut right to the chase. Bagon liked that, no nonsense or pussyfooting around! He gave a small roar low in his chest. < You’re right, I know I can do it!....Maybe I should accept this help….what’s the harm? Otherwise I’ll just keep leaping from these cliffs and failing over and over...maybe you know something I don’t. >Maggie was looking on at the trio of boys, chin in hand as she waited to see if she would need to step in. But Todd had risen to the occasion quicker than she herself could think to ask him, and she was as proud as ever. Maybe one day Sam would have that same pride and joy for his Bagon. He was already determined to help him, which the ranger took as an excellent sign. Todd took his time translating, before saying simply, < Yep he’ll go! > Bagon shot the bird a withering look but he was right. He was going. He couldn’t wait until he could speak for himself, though! He looked back to Sam and simply nodded. There, that would work. Maggie stood from her rock and picked up a pokeball from the pouch of supplies she’d gathered for Sam, tossing it to him, ”Go for it, bud.”

Seeing the excitement all over Bagon's face was something that lit Sam with a sort of joy he couldn't ever explain. It was different than all the times when he would give other trainers their starters or even times he caught Pokemon for his professor. Bagon would be his. Really, properly, his. He'd belong to him. They'd be partners for life! By time he had filtered those thoughts it had been enough time for Maggie to offer him a pokeball. He nodded, taking it. "Absolutely." He looked over to the Bagon and smiled. "Alright buddy, let's go!" With that, he tossed the ball, excited that he'd gotten the chance to get this Bagon. While the pokeball twisted and wiggled on the ground, he turned to Todd and grinned. "Thanks Torchic. I think Bagon and I will get along just great. And maybe by time we meet next, I'll be able to translate for you." It was a tease, and he turned to Maggie with a smile as well. "Thanks so much, really." He extended his hand to offer her a departure handshake before moving over to the pokeball and picking it up with pride. Bagon- truly his first, and hopefully only, starter. » 244 » fitz » PRECIOUS I CANNOT

When he awoke the next morning they still hadn't returned. He cried for days and days, waiting for their return, willing them to come back to him. And they never did. Finally, his tummy grumbling for sustenance and his heart aching, he took his first of many leaps from the high cliff-face his nest was built into. Seconds later his world went dark, as he crashed into a too-big boulder. Rangers found his crumpled form not long at all after that - the rumble had shaken the walls of the outpost itself. The mournful cries preceding it had already raised their suspicions and led an expedition team to search for what they all assumed was an abandoned baby anyway. He was nursed back to health and released into the biome he was found in by his now trainer. He's got short-term memory issues due to his early trauma and his attention can only be held for an hour at a time tops before he has to be guided back on track. This led to him jumping from cliffs that much more frequently when he was in his biome, as he would jump and forget he still couldn't fly, before doing it again and again. A careful eye will be needed, and patience to keep him from hurting himself or lashing out in confusion when he can't remember what he was doing or how he got somewhere. His one strong memory from nesthood is his only goal for now - to one day fly, and be able to find his parents. you also receive: pokeball x5 potion x2 inset map pokedex tm case
