[attr="class","rostercatsub2"]PERSONALITY | [attr="class","rostercat2"] Hers was an uneventful birth. I mean, people are born every day! Nothing special happened, no birds sang at her christening, no rainbows ended at her crib, she didn’t stand up and sing an aria on the changing table. Voi che sapete just wasn’t in her repertoire yet. The only thing of note, perhaps, is her mother’s Herdier slept in her doorway that first night, and each night after, keeping watch over the bairn that seemed to be important to his humans. But surely even this is a common enough thing in households with newborns? All her mother could think of was getting back out on the contest circuit, her father fully supportive of this. After all, he’d simply needed an heir. She’d done her wifely duty, and was free to do as she wished. A series of nannies came in to take care of the rearing while he went back to his jetset worklife. Henry the herdier kept the blossoming out of trouble as best as he could, and had as much if not more of a paw in raising her than did her parents. She grew up only seeing the briefest of glimpses of her absentee mother and father. And in these sole interactions knew two things to be true. Contests were life and so was business. She knew the only way to really spend any time with her parents, then, was to show an interest in what drove them in life. And so she used up all of her extra time training the now aging Henry in “cool” coordinating and researching how best to seek sponsorships and network. The next time she managed to have both parents home simultaneously she begged them to sit still for just five minutes JUST FIVE MINUTES so she could show them her plan. At the tender age of 10 she held her first meeting in their formal dining room turned conference room; complete with a well-planned slideshow, soft ambient music, video of her training sessions, various projections and estimates on charts indicating costs and benefits to her proposal, and finally a quick demonstration to end with a bang. After Herdier displayed a perfect Retaliate on a dummy Sarah’s nanny had rolled in, the girl turned to her parents, clasping her hands together and taking a quick snappy bend-at-the-waist bow. When she raised and saw them both on their feet applauding she knew she’d done something right. All of her hard work had paid off. Her parents were happy, beaming, proud. They cared. After that night they seemed to spend more and more time at home, Sarah’s mom spent a great deal of her visits in the backyard helping to expand the girl’s repertoire. For her 12th birthday she gave her a gift of her own Pokemon, figuring it was long past time for poor old Henry to retire. Sarah loved the Pancham with all her heart, and Petunia is still with her to this day. They’d been told by her breeder that Petunia didn’t have any sort of affinity for outright battling whatsoever. She was peaceful as could be but had a flair for performing when the mood struck her. Sarah’s mother and the breeder were childhood friends and the man instantly thought of her when it came time to find a home for the young pancham. Ironically, all of its best moves were “tough” so Sarah always loved that she learned these kick butt moves and would never use them for anything other than show unless she absolutely had to. Thankfully there weren’t many fight or flight situations in the tourist town of Grus City or well-managed makeshift contest halls. The contests in Inset were pretty relaxed and inner-circl...ey - the junior divisions even more so. Now and then they would travel to other regions to give her a taste of real competition and it was on one of these trips, this time to Kanto, that she actually managed to win a ribbon?? She’d just turned 18 and entered a Tough contest for the hell of it - and Petunia killed it. She still isn’t sure if she just caught the one other competitor on a bad day or what, but they came out with a ribbon and she came back to Inset with a modicum of celebrity after that. Her mom insisted that she wear it on her bag to every contest back home from thereon. But then, she just felt….not above contests but over them once she was in Inset. It didn’t give her that same thrill when she had been to other regions and seen what it was like out there. She was tired of the drama that came from such small circles that Inset contests had. And now that she was eighteen, well…..she kind of got to thinking about whether she’d ever actually had any dreams of her own. What were her actual interests? Had she really wasted her childhood and adolescence chasing her parents’ affections and missing out on figuring things out for herself? A long talk with Petunia had her headed for the ranger’s station in the dead of night. The next morning she presented her ribbon and documentation to enter the ranger program. She figured there was no better way to see what more there was in life than by giving back to the region like that. No better use of the ribbon she’d earned than to get into the program. But after only a few months on the job, on desk duty and helping new trainers find their starters, she’s realized this wasn’t the right path to take either. Petunia wasn’t happy being cooped up with her in the office day in and day out, and she felt like she’d just tethered herself right back into place doing something else that just made no sense. Plus..it felt like she’d cheated, honestly. Using what she still considered to be the dumb luck of that ribbon to get her in here when so many other trainers came in with dreams of doing missions to gain favor with the Rangers and be selected based on true merit. By her 19th birthday, just under a year since the contest in Kanto, she filed her resignation from the Ranger program - still just the basic rank. And told her superiors she’d be back one day, maybe. For now the wide open region and all the potential it holds waits for her. She sent a single letter back home when she’d first moved away a year ago and never heard back so she figured they wouldn’t need an update on where she was now either, as much pain as that caused her to have to admit.
