◣◆◢ | It was shit to think that one injury that happened could have changed his entire life history. He'd been injured a countless number of times and had the scars to prove it but his shoulder had been what fucked him over on having a secure future. With a grunt and a groan he pulled himself out of the rental car and realized that this would be the last time he was driving for awhile. Handing over the keys to the machine meant that he was really going through with this shit. Oh well. It wasn't like he could turn back now. Not when he'd already barfed his guts up flying all the way over here. If it had been by boat then maybe the trip wouldn't have been so damn bad. But flying was faster and he was impatient to get on the road with this shit. If he had to start an entire new life he was going to do it as quickly as he can so that nothing would get in his way.
His boots made a heavy sound on the pavement as he walked across. Sun beating down on his bare arms as he realized that summer was coming way too fast for his own liking. Heat meant sweat and sweat meant that there were going to be dudes running around with their shirts off making everyone uncomfortable. At least he figured it was discomfort. With another grunt and groan though he just titled the sunglasses closer to his face and dropped the keys into the lock box for whoever to pick up. What was done was done now and he wasn't going to be able to take it back, even if he wanted to. He had a general idea of where he was supposed to be going. After all the lab wasn't that far from where he had been to begin with.
Kem had never actually been inside a lab before. The idea of becoming a Pokemon trainer in his youth hadn't really resonated with him in any way and now that he was older he figured his time had been long passed. After all he wasn't some spring buck out to prove himself or whatever. But that didn't mean he couldn't still hold his head just as high as the rest of them while he did this. It was just daunting that he was so late to the game. After all there was no guarantee any of the Pokemon in the lab wanted an older fuck like him to be their partner. He wouldn't put it past them to probably look him over. And it wasn't like he had the book smarts or whatever the fuck to make up for it either.
Whatever. They would either like him or they wouldn't. One way or another this was getting done and that was that. Pushing open the lab door without so much as a second thought he looked around, mostly appreciating the fact that there was air conditioning in the building. Without it he felt like he was on fire. The tan lines that were already etched into his skin due to years of working wouldn't burn of course but that didn't make the heat any more comfortable in his mind. |

Summer was here, and rearing its ugly head on the region of Inset. Some people were absolutely reveling in it. Countless girls walked by in next to naught and plenty of guys too. They were soaking up the sun while Tate’s cardigan of the day soaked up the sweat from the small of her back. Even with their climate control in the lab itself she was miserable in the summer. Just looking out at the hazy street just outside their doors made her skin crawl. Let alone when she had to spend part of her morning out back training water pokemon in a blow up pool to prepare them to go with trainers some day. Summer also usually meant vacations after all, so whoever wasn’t on paid leave for the week would have to pick up the slack. She took her vacation with her husband around their birthdays in the Fall so she was always one staying behind at the lab to cover extra shifts and gaps in the schedule. All in a days’ work though. She was so relieved when the pokemon she’d been working with finally showed signs of fatigue - that was her cue to take them back inside to rest up and get some rest herself. She’d no sooner put their balls away in a back cabinet where the pokemon in training were kept than she heard the front door chime. So much for her break. She still took her time coming up front, picking up a couple of sandwiches, cups, and a pitcher of lemonade from the break room to pack into the lobby. There was no rule saying she couldn’t have her lunch and work with a trainer too. ”Hello!” she called out into the room as she clomped into it, thoroughly aware of just how gross she felt at the moment. While she’d normally feel relief in the A/C now it only chilled her from the sheen of sweat she’d accumulated - not to mention the splotch of water on one half of her skirt from a splash gone awry during training. This shift couldn’t end soon enough. Hopefully this trainer was one who knew what he wanted or would at least be happy with whatever he got. ”I’m Tate, welcome to our Lab, and Cassiopeia itself if you’re arriving from out of town.” it was a small enough village with plenty of tourists when it came to people travelling for reasons such as receiving a pokemon. She could guarantee he wasn’t from here. The locals knew who was a permanent resident and who definitely wasn’t. He fell into the latter category to be sure. ”If you’re here to receive a starter I need you to fill this paperwork out for me so we can get the ball rolling. And please answer the asterisked questions and prompts aloud to save time.”The basics were there of course, his name*, date of birth, phone number, email, etc. But then the important long form questions. Experience with pokemon*, what their plans are while in the region*, any former job experience with pokemon or career plans*, if they have preferred types*, types or species they absolutely did not want*, why for each*, and lastly if they were able to provide for their pokemon and care for them properly*, with a final section of check boxes to opt-in for emailed or texted tips about pokemon care and events happening in the region and a lower line or two for his signature. She took a bite of one of the sandwiches and poured herself a glass of lemonade, gesturing with one hand to invite him to help himself as well if he wished.

◣◆◢ | He was a bit startled when he realized that he wasn't alone in the room. Though that was a given considering what he was here to do. After all it would be strange if someone didn't come along while he was here to try and get a starter Pokemon. Though he wasn't really sure what sort of procedures they had here. He'd watched a couple tv shows or whatever that showed a kid getting their starter Pokemon but he'd never really paid that much attention. Not when there were millions of other things that he was doing. Most of it was work related but that wasn't the point right now. At least someone was here now to help take care of him. "Ye' I came in from Johto n' I'll tell you what that flyin' almost caused me to have a heart attack." He really should have taken the boat option. But hindsight was twenty twinny or something like that? Whatever he was pretty sure he'd got it right. He stepped up to the desk in order to get a better look at the paperwork. He wasn't too big on writing or whatever but he was sure he could fill out these forms.
He grunted a bit at having to write up something in such small forms. He didn't have nice and neat handwriting. If anything it was blocky and a bit more childish than you would expect from someone of his age. But you didn't really do a lot of writing when you worked out on a farm. "M'names Kem..." He glanced at the sheet to make sure that he hit all of the marks on the page. He didn't really want to say his full name out loud though so he hoped that she accepted just his last name verbally. Of course he wrote his full name down because he wasn't gonna lie on the papers. His momma told him lying wasn't ever going to do anyone any good. But his daddy told him that there was no need to share everything right off the bat either and his first name was definitely something he didn't like sharing none.
"I used to work out at the MooMoo Ranch in Johto. It's near Olivine. We'd handle the Miltank 'n Tauros and the like. Doin' the yearly driving and whatnot. Then in the off season we'd help out at the docks n' stuff with the Machamps." His work was very hands on with the Pokemon he had worked with. Something he wasn't sure if it would work in his favor. But it probably wouldn't hurt any either truth be told. "I injured my shoulder during my short football career n' the injury finally wore me down so bad that m' boss let me go. S'now I had to find another career an' the best way to do that was to do this. I don' know what other job would be fit for an old cowpoke." After all he couldn't lift like he used to but he was still fit enough to wander around a region and help a Pokemon or two out.
"I ain't got no preference for Pokemon or anything. I reckon working with anyone s'long as they'll work with me is fine. I ain't looking for someone to be a workhorse or nothing. Just wanna have a travel and good time." He was here for a good time after all and a Pokemon that was also down for that seemed like the best bet in his mind. "I've been workin' with farm Pokemon for a good chunk of my life so I hope I can take good care of them. I ain' gonna pretend I'm an expert but I know the basics at least." And that was all she could really expect out of a guy who mostly flunked all of his classes and jumped straight into manual labor after college was a dude due to injuries.
He ticked as many of the boxes as he could, including the one about help being sent directly to your phone. He could use all the damn help he could get after all. Finishing it up he carefully set the clipboard down. After all momma told him to be careful with other people's things. He was a big man and things tended to break in his hands if he wasn't careful enough. |

Did everyone from Johto sound like they’d fallen off a wagon on Route 4? ”Well it’s nice to meet you, Kem. Welcome once again.” She’d not missed a last name - or first if he was going by his surname. After all she’d not given him her own. And Nishimura-Szczepański could be quite the mouthful, especially one nobody ever asked for. As he continued his introduction her suspicions were confirmed for what exactly that kind of dialect meant - he was a farm hand of some sort. It would’ve been a waste of an accent not to go into that line of work. At least he had experience with pokemon, even if it wasn’t in the sense of what they provided them for here. Usually the people she saw could only point to a familial poochyena or something of that nature. He appeared humble about his experience and she couldn’t help but to wonder if it was an act or if he really didn’t understand that he had a leg up on getting a starter in her book just from that answer. Cowpoke or no, experience was experience compared to none at all with stars in their eyes of being a training champ. ”I’m sorry to hear about your injury - I just want to confirm that it won’t be a hindrance for you caring for the pokemon you may leave with today? No nerve damage that renders you immobile, or head injuries that knock you out, or anything like that?” she hoped for his sake it was a bum knee and nothing completely debilitating. She could not, in good conscience, let him take a starter if he could pass out on the road and leave it locked in a ball forever or loose and under risk of attack from any number of wild pokemon or rogue trainers out to steal pokemon as well. Maybe even someone she’d turned away before for being incapable of caring for a starter from the lab. She walked over to the cabinets where they kept the pokeballs full of starter choices and plucked a few out to present to him. In theory you would think it easier if they had no preference - but that just made it harder to narrow down who to bring out. When you could only present three pokemon out of all you had on hand who would you send out? Maybe keeping it to Johto region pokemon would be helpful since he seemed unsure of his knowledge outside of what he already knew. It could help him get an easier foothold on his start here in Inset. She didn't have to worry about the types who tended to whine about not wanting to see the pokemon they saw back home, the ones who came here for the special sorts they didn't have in their regions.

◣◆◢ | Personal questions always made him a little bit uncomfortable to say the least. Like there was something about himself that he wasn't quite sure how to answer for it. Of course he didn't ever really think that deep about it either. So all in all he just usually felt uncomfortable about it for no good reason in his mind. But he knew that answering questions here was the key in order to getting a starter Pokemon or whatever so he needed to at least try his best here. It wouldn't do him any good to skimp on what he knew was the best way to get a start in this new region. He wanted a travel companion to spend time with and it made it easier if he could meet them beforehand. At least that was what he had always heard from the tv about this sort of thing. Choosing your first Pokemon was a right of passage or something like that.
Carefully he shook his head in response to her question. "Nah it ain' nothing serious. Just when you have trouble liftin' up anythin' past one fifty the boss ain' got as much use for you as he used to." He could move about with relative ease and the worst of his problems was with lifting larger and heavier objects. That being said he wasn't going to go out and try to wrestle with a gator or nothing but he still liked to think he was pretty fit nonetheless. "I can still do plenty though so I won' be no trouble to any of the Pokemon." At least he hoped that he wouldn't be any trouble. At least he hoped he wouldn't be physically. He was already worried about making a fool of himself intelligence wise since he wasn't exactly the most well read individual.
He was quiet as she moved around to do whatever it was she was doing. Hopeful that she wasn't about to turn him away because he couldn't lift as much as he used to or because he wasn't up to specs. After all he wasn't a young buck anymore and that meant that he would have to deal with whatever came with it. If it had been years ago this might not have even been a problem. But years ago he hadn't even been considering doing anything like this. It was all just a matter of circumstance. He had a high amount of nervous energy he needed to get out somehow. Shifting from one foot to the other he hoped that he wouldn't be a bother with the movements. But right now his nerves were getting the better of him and it couldn't be helped. |

That would be hard for most anyone, she would imagine, to do day in and day out. It was no wonder the injury he’d sustained in school had only gotten worse over the years. She tsked as her back turned but she kept her thoughts to herself. It wasn’t her place to correct someone on the path their life had taken so far - only to be sure she set them on the best foot forward from here on so long as they weren’t a danger to their pokemon. ”Well, Kem, everything checks out with your paperwork and I don’t see any reason to keep you from seeing the pokemon I’ll be offering to you to choose from today. Just please take your time getting to know them, because it’s important that you match their dreams and aspirations just as much as they line up with yours. It’s also good to keep an open mind and try to be flexible in this process. And of course, be respectful.” she cringed a little as she hoped her last comment didn’t come across as too nagging. She’d been told by more than one trainer that she could be overbearing or condescending but she didn't mean to be. She just cared an awful lot about the pokemon they had here and wanted to make sure the trainers had all the information they would need to be successful with them. ”Let me know if you would like to see all of your starters at once or talk to them one at a time. I’ll release the first one now.” she told him, trying to give trainers the option these days. Sometimes it could be overwhelming to deal with three strange pokemon all at one time, stressful to both sides really. Especially when it came to hurting feelings. With the click of a button on one of the balls in her hand and a shimmer of light, his first starter choice came into view. < Och! Wot’r ye doin there laddy? Dinnae yer mam ever teach ye tae wipe yer feet at th’ dour? > the bird with the thick burr of a voice squawked at him. < Yer gonny track in tae mud an muck, ye whopper o’ a shite! > waving his sprig of leek at the cowboy as if pointing out the invisible to the naked eye specks of dirt in the tile.

◣◆◢ | Regardless of what happened he was pretty sure he might find a Pokemon here that would be able to put up with him. Not to mention the fact that the lab worker here seemed to be pretty keen on giving him tips. To be completely honest he could use all the help he could get so he didn't mind that she was pointing things out or giving him tips. It made things easier in his mind if he was going to be able to keep everything on track. Not that he thought he was going to absolutely fail at this whole trainer thing but he wasn't really suited towards being sociable. Sure he cared about others and liked to be able to help but talking a lot wasn't really his cup of tea. Hopefully whoever he got paired with would be able to tolerate that... He didn't mind a bit if they were the ones doing all of the talking.
The idea of meeting them all at once or separately rolled around in his brain. Meeting them one on one would probably be easier but at the same time he sort of wanted to see how they interacted with one another. "I don' mind meeting them all at once." That way he would be able to discern between the personalities better. At least that was how he figured it would be. He could see how they acted with each other and with how they acted towards him in one swoop. While he was deliberating though the first of his choices was released. His brain lit up a little bit at the familiar sight of a Pokemon from his home region. He knew what a Farfetch'D was and he knew that they were kind of rare back home.
What he wasn't expecting was to be scolded by the bird. He had been pretty sure that his boots and such were clean when he came in. After all they were new and he hadn't even been in the mud with them yet. But he glanced down nonetheless and checked the shoes to make sure that he hadn't tracked something in unwittingly. But he didn't see any mud or dirt on them, leaving the large man even more confused than he was to begin with. "I ain' got no dirt on 'em though." And he knew dirt. Maybe the bird was just trying to test him or something... |

Tate nodded, ”Yes, Farfetch’d. I’m going to send out the other two starter options as well now. Mind your manners.” she clicked the buttons on the other balls to reveal Cyndaquil and Electrike, ”Cyndaquil and Elektrike, this is Kem.” The Electrike gave a little wag of her citrine tipped tail and yapped in greeting, her eyes soft and serene but with a twinkle of mischief in their depths. No words were spoken which would lead one to believe she had yet to master pokespeech. Just what she wants one to think. The Cyndaquil gave a bored yawn and looked around the room, < This isn’t the library…. > he protested under his breath with a scoff. He took his time to look around before finally settling his gaze on the cowboy. He gave a little sniff of disapproval at his whole….”look” and didn’t bother saying hello. The Farfetch’d wagged his leek at them both, < Straighten up, ye twats! ◣◆◢ | While he hadn't really expected to be overwhelmed by the fact that all three Pokemon were out at once he couldn't help but feel slightly intimidated by it all. While he'd been around a lot of Pokemon in his life most of them were farm Pokemon. He had a figuring that none of these Pokemon were of that sort considering they had been brought to the lab to be someone's starter Pokemon. But he wasn't going to judge them before he got to know them of course. "Yeah, I'm here for a starter Pokemon..." He wondered if it was weird because he was so much older than the trainers who usually came in and out of here. But he'd been assured before coming that age wasn't really a factor so he didn't really want to worry about it too much. But that didn't mean that the Pokemon in front of him wouldn't judge him for it either.
He was glad that at least one of the new Pokemon seemed excited to see him. Even if he wasn't really sure at first what the Pokemon was. There were lots of Pokemon he supposed that he would have to learn what they were. But at least he recognized the fire type. The cyndaquil didn't seem very interested in him unfortunately though... Something that caused his hopes to fall a bit. While he knew he was supposed to be out here experiencing new things it was strange to him that the Cyndaquil of all Pokemon wouldn't want to be around him. Though they were shy Pokemon from what he'd gathered back home so maybe that was why?
"M'name is Kem an' I'm here to partner up with one of y'all folks. I ain' never had a Pokemon of my own but I used to work on a farm with lots of Pokemon." He hoped that introducing himself would help the situation a little bit. After all it was important that they laid the situation out on the table the best that they could. "Y'all wanna tell me about yourselves?" That was the right way to do it right? Learning about the Pokemon so that he would know which one would be the best fit for him. But to be honest he wasn't even sure what he wanted to do with his whole Pokemon career. So how was he supposed to know what would be best?
