In retrospect, he probably should have gone to the pokemon laboratory. He could take the opportunity to learn how they conducted studies, introduce himself to the aides or the professor, find out what they were interested in researching. Hell, even network a bit- maybe they’d let him know if they needed an extra researcher or two in the field. Instead Silas found himself standing at the base of a mountain, its peak dusted with snow. It was breathtakingly beautiful, and he had to resist the urge to skip the outpost entirely and start hiking the rocky, winding trail up its face. He was here for a pokemon. Scaling the mountain could wait- this was a once in a lifetime event. After all, choosing a starter pokemon was probably one of the most important decisions of anyone who wanted to work with pokemon. Starters were supposed to be a best friend, a lifelong partner- whether that happened right away or later down the line. At the lab, he’d be able to meet three. Here he only have the chance to befriend one. The lab was clearly the more logical decision. And yet (perhaps against his better judgement), something about the station drew him in. Perhaps fate would guide him. One way to find out.His cloth boots unintentionally muffled his footsteps as he stepped into the lobby of the station. It was… a lot cleaner than he’d pictured when he read about the process, but not a bad looking place overall. Silas’ hand was raised in a half-wave when he realized that he didn’t see anyone around. Awkward. Maybe he needed to let a ranger know he was here? He walked over to the front desk, looking for a pager or a bell or something that might alert someone to his presence. Instead blue eyes skimmed over a stack of blank forms on the end closest to him- something akin to a background check? Made sense that they wouldn’t let just anyone wander in. Silas patted his pockets down for a pen and, upon successfully finding one, dutifully started to fill one out. Boring, but necessary. @mod ● 355

I’ve got to take Todd into town to have his beak looked at. No, no, nothing too major. Just a little scuff is all. That last bat- Oh! Hello! Mom, I’ll call you back! Hi! I'm Maggie!” the fluttery rhythm of a conversation between mother and daughter came to an abrupt and jittery end before the ranger on the cell phone who had just entered the room changed gears and went full greeting card shtick - something she always managed to slip so easily into. It wasn’t too far off from her natural buoyant and effervescent friendliness, but she definitely chose her words more carefully and tried to be an active listener in these circumstances. "I see you've found the forms." she added, beaming. Good, someone with enough common sense to not just stand there like a knot on a log, or worse try to get into the biomes on their own when they weren't immediately serviced by a ranger. "Once you get that filled out and I take a look at it we can head down to a biome - I do assume that's what you're here for, right? Unless you just like filling out forms for starter requests as a hobby or something." she plopped down into a seat behind the desk and opened a drawer in the cabinet to her left to reveal a snoozing torchic, "Wake up, sleepy feathers. We've got a live one!" she teased the bird, tickling under his beak to rouse him. "So why don't you tell me what your experience as far as interacting with pokemon has been so far? Do you feel comfortable with them, do you have any specific plans going forward once you leave here - well for legal reasons if you leave here today with a starter." she hurriedly added, "Not that you won't leave here today, I won't let anything in the biomes hurt you so long as you're not a complete idiot and don't listen to me, but well sometimes people just aren't successful in getting them or they do something wrong and I have to be a butthead and kick them out empty handed. But we won't have a problem like that, right?" she was obviously a bit scatterbrained when it came to using her words.

He was skimming the form over to make sure he’d filled everything out when movement out of the corner of his eye made him look up. A woman with bright red hair seated herself in the chair behind the desk, happy chatting away, presumably to him. Brows knitted in concentration, Silas’s eyes followed her lips, trying to catch fragments of whatever words he could. It was difficult, especially considering how much she was saying. Experience…. Pokemon… Specific… Oh, she wanted to know what pokemon he was familiar with- that must be a determining factor for a starter pokemon. He held out the form to her with one hand- it detailed his experiences with his Aipom, as well as a paragraph on his work experience at the safari zone and some of his familiarity with Hoenn’s native populations. With his other hand Silas signed to her, touching the top of his cheek before swiping a finger down towards his mouth. “ I’m Deaf. Don’t hear you.” He was hopeful that she’d understand, but just in case, he reached for the cellphone in his pocket. It took him only a moment to tap out a quick message on the large screen and hold it up so the ranger could see: Do you know sign language? He tilted his head and raised his eyebrows to emphasize the question. Worse come to worse, they could just type messages out to each other. Reading lips was hard and not something Silas was used to; he always signed with his parents, and his friends back in Fortree were quick to catch on to the basics. For everyone else, he had Aipom there to interpret... But as a service pokemon, he’d left him in the care of another young trainer back home. Speaking of pokemon, he at last spotted a fluff of yellow and orange feathers behind the desk. A light blush colored Silas’ cheeks as he flashed a smile at the Torchic. So cute.I'm happy either way, so whichever you prefer! <3

Well that was rude! She opened her mouth to tell him as much before said phone was thrust out for her to read his message. She then shook her head for what she hoped was a universal "No" ”Oh. Oh geez, I’m sorry I-” she felt like a complete ass, one for prattling on and on as she had and never even giving him the chance to clarify this for her and two for reacting as she had when he hadn’t answered straight away. While she’d always wanted to learn sign language it hadn’t come up in her to-do list as of yet. She was kicking herself now for wasting a month on martial arts to bond with fighting pokemon who still wouldn’t give her the time of day when she could have learned some basic signs for this exact sort of situation. Should she take his phone from him to write back? Should she use her own? Could he read lips? Would it be rude to ask that of him? She didn’t think it’d be possible with as fast as her mind went and how her mouth seemed to run twice as quickly. She noticed him smile at the Torchic and plucked Todd up to plop him onto the desk as a peace offering and mouthed an exaggerated “Sorry” to nail home her earlier apology that was probably still garbled even once she’d realized what was happening. ”Say hi Todd. With your wings.” Todd, a pretty smart bird, had caught on that his trainer had goofed it up and did his best to save face for her. He gave his best graceful “parade wave” and strutted around on the desk looking adorable. While her pokemon put on his little show she hurriedly typed out basic instructions on her own phone, before handing it over. Welcome to the Ranger Station! Your paperwork looks good. You’ll get to interact with the first pokemon we see and that could be your starter if you do well with it. I’ll be there with you and so will my Torchic to keep you and the pokemon safe. Are there any signs that would be useful to know in case I need to communicate quickly for safety? She hoped that would be adequate for now as she let him read the message and pulled up the list of biomes on the computer to see what was ready for trainers to visit.

A flurry of emotions seemed to present on the ranger’s face- annoyance, confusion perhaps?- before it melted into something akin to apologetic as she at last shook her head no. Silas shrugged as a good-natured ‘oh well’ and set the phone down on the desk. It happened; at least they still had a means to communicate. Her apology was clear; the researcher gave her a quick thumbs-up to let her know he didn’t hold it against her. Silas leaned against the desk ready to type out another message on his phone when the Torchic landed on the surface, putting on a showy wave that made his cheeks turn a brighter shade of pink. Silas wished he’d thought to bring a berry or a poffin with him to offer the Torchic for putting on such a cute display. Instead he offered his hand, palm-up and flat on the desk in case the fire chick wanted some scritches. Contests were not his forte, but he wondered if the woman was once a coordinator- her pokemon certainly had a way of winning him over. If he’d remained in Hoenn, he definitely would have requested a Torchic as a starter. It was her turn to type out a message on her own phone, and he nodded as he skimmed it. Quickly he tapped out another message on his own phone, and spun it towards her so she could read. Great! Glad to be here. I’m looking forward to it. For safety, these might be useful: Go [there], stop, careful. The first two signs were fairly self-explanatory. Fists balled up, he pointed with both index fingers to different places around the room. Go there. Or go there. Or there. As a visual language, the context came from the direction he pointed. After a brief pause, he chopped one hand into the other, mouthing the word ‘stop’ silently. Pretty easy, if he did say so himself. Most hearing people got the hang of that one quickly. He was pretty sure it was his parent's most-used sign, at least when he was a kid. The last sign might be a little more complicated. He demonstrated the ‘K’ hand shape first- like a peace sign, but with his thumb tucked between the fingers. He gave her a moment to remember it, maybe practice, then made the same shape with his other hand and tapped them together twice, one on top of the other. Is it always dangerous in there? He tapped into the phone once more, eyebrows arched over blue eyes curiously. Maybe it was just a standard thing, or maybe she knew in advance that the pokemon they’d be seeing was dangerous. Silas didn’t mind a little danger now and then, but he also didn’t want to get killed during his first ever pokemon encounter. That’d be pretty embarrassing. ahhh thank you! he's brand new so I'm still getting used to him lol but I'm really enjoying him!

It lasted only long enough for Maggie to finish her own message to the would-be trainer and then came a series of gestures that he watched his human mimic along with unwavering concentration. She spoke each of them as they were covered so Todd would know what to look for too. He could communicate verbally with humans but he wasn’t quite at reading texts just yet. Maggie smiled at the next message, figuring she may have frightened him with her talks of safety, I’ve yet to have an incident, but it’s part of our spiel. Some people just don’t have much common sense and don’t heed my warnings or those given by the pokemon. I feel like you have a good amount of practice reading body language and would know when you should keep your distance. She showed him the message and gave him long enough to read before pulling her phone back to type another one, handing him a starter kit bag with five pokeballs, a map of the region of Inset, two potions, a TM case, and his very own Pokedex. Here are some supplies that will get you started on your journey once you leave here. We’ll be heading down to the desert biome now if you’re ready. You can use one of those pokeballs to capture your starter - it’ll be the first pokemon we come across in that biome. You just have to earn its trust, and I can translate between pokespeech and typing to get you started that way to get to know them. Oh, I just realized I never introduced myself here. I'm Maggie! And this is Todd. She let him read that message as she stood and peeled off her sweatshirt to be down to shorts and a tanktop - it would be pretty scorching in the biome they were going too without much shade. A couple ice cold bottles of water went into her own backpack in case it took them awhile to find a pokemon or convince it to go along with Silas. Assorted other supplies were in there as well.

The fact that there hadn’t been any incidents at the station was encouraging, though the word ‘yet’ did not slip by him. Silas paused in reading the message she’d typed to accept the bag of supplies. The Pokedex was especially intriguing, and he examined its shiny surface in great detail before slipping it into the cargo pocket of his capris. As a researcher, it would surely be one of his most valuable and frequently used tools. He took one of the minimized pokeballs and pocketed it as well as he continued reading. A desert biome. What lives in a desert biome? Silas mentally flipped through a list of possible pokemon he knew, which was admittedly limited: Sandshrew, Cacnea... Baltoy...? As a ranger his mother had plenty of missions all over Hoenn, but she never took him with her on the desert ones- they were often more dangerous than the rest, and not just because of the harsh weather conditions. The first tendrils of doubt started to creep into his mind. Maybe he was out of his depth here. But it wasn’t as if everyone who came here for their starter would know everything about the first pokemon they encountered. The thought, and Maggie’s confidence in him (if her first message was anything to go by), were enough to reassure him. When Silas looked up again she was in a tank top and packing away water bottles, which told him everything he needed to know about the conditions inside. The short-sleeved blue tunic he sported was breathable cotton, which would be good for the heat while keeping the sun (actual sun, or intense, replicated sunlight for the pokemon?) from burning his skin. As for his face, he pulled a cowl over his head; the lightweight material would shield his eyes and offer some portable shade. Long, choppy blonde hair peeked out of the bottom of the billowy hood as he turned back to the phone. A pleasure to meet you, Maggie and Todd! I’m looking forward to the experience. I think I have everything, so I’ll follow you down to the biome. He trusted she’d relay the message to her Torchic. After giving her a chance to read it, he stowed the phone away as well- they’d need it again once inside, but it wouldn’t do to lose it before they arrived. He gave himself a once-over to double check he had everything he needed. Silas gave Maggie and Todd two-thumbs up and put on his best ‘let’s do this!’ grin. <3

The brave Torchic took a flying and flapping leap off the desk complete with a somersault that would have cemented Silas’s earlier theory about him being a contest pokemon once upon a time. And then the pair set off down a hall to a bank of elevators, leading the way to the researcher’s destiny. A few quick taps of coded buttons and fidgeting with a built in screen once they were inside an elevator and soon enough the threesome would be zipping through the building that was ~bigger on the inside~ than it first appeared to arrive at the desert biome sector. As soon as the doors open they were hit with a blast of arid heat, turning the elevator into a tiny toaster oven that Todd basked in and Maggie grimaced from, taking a few steps out onto the hard packed sand and sediment. Even the breeze that blew threw as an effort of comfort left one feeling hot and sticky. The sooner they met his match and got out the better, in Maggie’s opinion. She turned to look at Silas with her best mustered smile and pulled out her phone to tap out a message, Lead the way. preferring to keep him where she could see him as well as any dangers that could lie ahead of them. A cactus only a few yards away with some low lying brush growing around the base was rattling as if being bashed or thrashed at by something. That would be a good place to start. She pointed it out to him and nodded her head in that direction to make the point clear. Just as she started to walk there herself, the cause of the commotion made herself seen. A young and ambitious Cubone misjudged her next whack and spiralled right out through the shrubs into their view. She leapt back onto her feet, oblivious to the humans and Torchic for the moment. Instead complaining aloud in a peculiarly high pitched and heavily accented voice, < Why you won’t come down, dahling? You know you wants to give it up. Zat sweet desert nectar. That wadda, give it to me! HHHHYA! > another solid but futile whap of her blunt bone weapon at the rigid trunk of the cactus. Her eyes were irate and a bit wild under her skull hat. Which, now that Maggie noticed it, was decorated pretty elaborately with red clay scrawlings almost like a sugar skull. And the accent the creature had seemed to oscillate between what exactly it wanted to sound like. Like a mash up of several trying to find just the right one she wanted to use. Maggie did her best to translate all that Silas couldn’t hear into something easily digestible I think she’s trying to chop down the cactus to get water? Maybe you could offer some assistance?

Silas was eager to meet his potential starter, and quickly followed the ranger and the adorable torchic into the elevator. He was momentarily surprised when the elevator plummeted almost impossibly far, but that was just as rapidly forgotten when the doors opened up to the artificially hot, arid land. This was definitely a desert all right- it didn't take long for sweat to start beading at his temples, even with the hood pulled over his head to shield his eyes. Hardly two steps out of the elevator a nearby cactus shook. Silas paused as Maggie pointed to it, regarding it curiously. The researcher was intrigued but the last thing he wanted to do was spook whatever pokemon was causing it. Phone in his hand once more, he started to tap out a question - do they sound angry? - when the creature in question stumbled out of the brush and into the open. He didn't recognize the creature even in passing, so she must not have been from Hoenn. And despite the skull atop her head, the fierce look in her eyes, and the bone she brandished in one hand, she didn't look like she could kill him. His primary concern behind him, and after a quick glance at Maggie’s phone, the researcher backspaced the words he’d typed originally and keyed in a new phrase, this time directed towards the cubone. Ready with the message, he crept around the side so that he stood in front of the pokemon. With a brief wave, he tapped a button on his phone. The device came to life with a quiet ding before reading aloud in (what had been described to him as) a robotic voice: “Hello! My name is Silas.” It was not the most sophisticated text-to-speech software and had trouble with his name, which it mispronounced- one of the many reasons he didn't frequently use it. “Do you need some help? Maybe if I move the brush you will have a better shot at the cactus.” With the ornate skull over her head Silas knew he wouldn’t be able to tell what the pokemon was saying, and his phone wasn’t equipped to pick up and translate poke-speech (come to think of it, he didn’t know any program that could- he made a mental note to investigate). But he waited with a tranquil expression for any sort of response, verbal or otherwise. He didn’t want to intrude if she didn’t want help- and that bone club looked like it could do a lot of damage, in the right hands. rip my reply 800 years later, so sorry for the wait!

She readied herself to read it aloud but his phone started to do it for him. Well that was nifty! Cubone stopped her toiling and pulled her bone back behind her head, ready to whap whoever was trying to make off with the spoils of her hard work. Like the assholes who came into the casino behind someone on a losing streak and got all the coinage! Her old trainer had hated those assholes! Assholes! But he was offering to help her….. < What is catch, here, dahling? You wanting to get the sweet juice for yourselfs hm? You wanting to make me do the work? Assholes! > Maggie’s eyes widened in surprise as she took in the scene and tried to figure out how to explain to Silas what had just been said. Instead she explained to the Cubone herself, ”No, sweetie, he wants to help. We have our own um...sweet juices. Let us help you if you really want to cut it down.”The Cubone looked to the other human with him, < Pretty enough, yes, but stronk too you vil do nice, jes. > her amalgam of accents completely lost on the would-be trainer but doing a number on the ranger guiding him. Even if his device could translate poke-speech it would have been having a field day with her garbled dialects. < Hokay, Seelass, you help. > she pronounced it as close to the way his phone had goofed it up. ”He can’t hear you, by the way. Todd give him a hand.” Maggie told her, just realizing she’d left that out, before giving her Torchic instructions and tapping out a message to Silas letting him know she’d accepted their help We’re good, I’ll take the right side you and Todd take the left. The Cubone shrugged in the meantime, < Is kay. Old owner, she no hear too good either. She old. Sorry, boy, I SAY SHE OLD! > the Cubone screamed, figuring that would solve it for the trainer, since it had helped with the old biddy she had accompanied at the end of the woman’s life to every casino and bar in just about every region in this world. < HOKAY BOY YOU PULL ZE BRUSHIE AND I WHAP WHAP WHAP HYYAAAA! > she pulled her bone back once more and gave several rapid smacks to the cactus now that the path was more or less clear for her to do it back and forth. Silas’s solution had been a good one and she recognized this but didn’t acknowledge it. Todd knew they were getting nowhere fast and let go of his tiny bundle of weeds that he’d been holding back to fly up onto Maggie’s shoulder and grab a small bottle of water from her backpack. He pecked a few holes in the bottom and held it over her shoulder to let it sprinkle trickles down to the ground in front of the Cubone as if she’d struck oil - or well….sweet sweet cactus juice. < Ha I TELLS YOU I TELL YOU ZIS HAHAHAHAHA IT WORKS SWEET JUICE YES! > she tilted her head back, one hand keeping her skull hat firmly in place as she opened her reptilian maw to take in the droplets of water happily. < Thanks you human peoples, you have done well. Ze Gods they will be shinink on you, yes, mhmm definite. I see it. > she added, tapping with purpose on the intricately drawn eye in the center of the skull. Having had her fill of the water to drink she held her paws out to collect some and wipe her body down with. She had been hard at work. Todd, meanwhile was growing tired and a bit bored of their charade but stayed dutifully in place as the water trickled out bit by bit for the makeshift shower for the Cubone. < So what brinks you here, hm, I SAY BOY WHAT IS IT YOU ARE HERE WHY >Maggie typed out an explanation with one hand and pet Todd with the other, taking control of the water bottle to give him a break. She wants to know why we’re here. I don’t want to ask too many questions of you but she says her old “owner” was hard of hearing so she’s screaming at you now to make up for it….and I wasn’t sure if you could hear that or if it’s nothing at all.

The pokemon mumbled something- he could see her skull helmet moving ever so slightly as she spoke, brandishing the bone once more. Whatever it was she was saying, it didn’t look good. He raised his hands as a show of good faith and was ready to back off to a safer distance when Maggie stepped in. Out of the corner of his eye he caught the words “let us help”, and nodded enthusiastically. He made a thumbs-up with one hand and lifted it to his chest with the other. Help. That was all he wanted to do. If she'd let them, of course. Maggie passed her phone over to him to read, and he gave an affirmative nod. The researcher followed the torchic over to the brush and, squatting down so he could get a better grasp, pulled an armful of brush out of the way. His hands were calloused enough that if there were any thorns trying to impale his palms, he didn’t react to them. It looked like the pokemon had taken to the plan, as she started swinging rapid-fire at the base of the cactus. Todd left his side, though Silas hardly noticed, fascinated by the markings on her skull. From a distance he thought they were natural markings, but no- now he could clearly see the clay strokes that made up the ornate patterns. Did they mean something? Was this common practice amongst the species, or were these special to her alone? Water poured forth and Silas was jolted out of his own thoughts. He looked up to see the torchic now on Maggie’s shoulder, a punctured water bottle providing the cool droplets. Well, that was one way to solve the issue. A small yet pleasant smile played on his lips. Still crouching by the cactus, he typed a quick question onto his phone as he turned back to the cubone. “The clay pattern looks lovely. Did you inscribe it yourself?” A little small talk to get to know her better. Another explanation from Maggie. Silas pointed to his ear, shook his head, and made a ‘zero’ with his hand. Nope. Nothing at all. He wondered if Maggie was getting annoyed by the screaming she’d described, but it was hard to tell from her expression. That was one advantage he had, he supposed. But why he was here…. he did owe her an explanation, after all. Silas pulled his own phone out once more and tapped out a message. “I’m here for a companion.” The phone read out. “I want to travel around Inset and do research. And for that I need a pokemon partner. I don’t know how long you’ve been here, but if you’d like to leave with me, you’re welcome to. And if you’re not ready, that’s okay too.” He knew that the ranger would absolutely not force the pokemon to come with him, but he wanted to make it clear to her anyways. <3

[newclass=.juni-rs]position:relative;background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.38);padding:5px;top:41px;margin-left:0px;font-family:montserrat;font-weight:bold;letter-spacing:1px;color:#FFFFFF;text-align:center;font-size:12px;text-transform:uppercase;text-shadow:-2px 1px #E854D6;[/newclass] [attr="class","bbb-icon"] [attr="class","bbb-txt"] Maggie fiddled with her phone while he chatted with the Cubone, trying to figure out if she had some sort of voice to text option. She thought that may be easier than transcribing it herself. More organic that way. Hopefully the phone could keep up with all those accents, though. < THANKING YOU BOY,! YIZ I DID! ONE GOOD TING ABOUT DESERT LIVINGS IS NO RAIN TO WASH MY ARTING EHWAY BAHAHAHAHAAH! > she barked at his question about the clay drawings on her cap. Just in time, too, Maggie’s phone picked up what she’d said and transcribed it perfectly into text for Silas to read. She supposed shouting helped with the clarity issue. Cubone waited as patiently as she could for an answer, sucking what were now muddy water droplets off of her palm. After what seemed like eons for her she got her response in the stilted computer voice. Her eyes softened a little behind the hollow sockets of the skull on her head, but her tone never changed, still harsh and loud, < I KNOW DIS I KNOW YOU WERE A SMART BOY, YES! I COULD TELL IT, YOU ARE SMART, YIS, MHMM. > she reached up and patted him on the cheek as she’d seen her old lady do so many times to the friendly waitstaff at casinos who brought around the cigarettes and drink orders. < YOU ARE GOOD TOO, FOR HELP TO DO DIS, AND YES FOR ASKING AND NOT TELLING. SMART AND GOOD MHMM. I WILL GO, I NO WANT TO BE HERE BANGING CACTUS FOR JUICES. SHOW ME DIS INSECT YOU SPEAKING OF. > the phone did its best to keep up, banging became banking and help became kelp. She was being a little more glottal now with whatever the accent was. Maggie knew they’d need to get her file once they got back to the front office but if Silas had asked the Cubone to come with and she’d accepted then there wasn’t much more to do here. The quicker they got out of the blazing, if artificial, sun - the better. She typed out on her phone, ”Ready to head back?” and held it out to him, dumping the remainder of the bottled water onto the Cubone’s outstretched hand for her to have a final sip of.
