Huh... he guessed he could share the information, if only vaguely. What was Champ going to do, talk to the police about a guy who got freedom from a trouble? Plenty of people did that, and it helped that Kaneda wasn't exactly going by his full name all the time. "I didn't really leave them." A small frown formed. "I was young. At the time, I thought I could handle a beef with Team Rocket. Their influence was really heavy in the region at the time and I had a complex. I lost to them, lost my team to them, lost everything."The frown left quickly. "But, I got away, got to Inset, and now I'm starting over. Starting fresh." He grinned at his egg and wiggled his brows at Champ, then down to the Growlithe. "Which somehow consisted of adoption, but I plan on getting my starter, and that'll make two on my team so far... couldn't be more pleased."Although it was clear that Team Rocket taking his old companions was a sore spot, he was optimistic. He couldn't ever get his Pokemon back, he had tried and failed multiple times and then punishments for disobedience lead to misuse or mistreatment to his previous teams, and sometimes something far worse... that was when he broke when they used the last of his team against him when he felt powerless. But in the end, they had to reap what they had sown. "To new beginnings and fewer mistakes made, hm?" He glanced at the Growlithe and then flashed a smile Champ's way before the lifted egg was gently set in the hole, where he started to bury it beneath the warm surface of the plains. gems. 5 words. 305 notes. Champ listened intently as Kaneda spoke. He was a man and wasn't quite in tune with emotions or feelings but he could read the pain in the man's words as he spoke. Champ was no stranger to the various teams that plagued the many regions around the pokeworld. In fact, there had been numerous classes in school that focused on the history of said things and the various damage they did to the regions as they held power.
This was the first time Champ could say he had met anyone personally afflicted by the troubles of teams. It was almost a shock - beforehand he had always felt like the various teams were almost fiction. There had been no hostile team takeover in the history of Inset and it just didn't seem like anyone really was fleeing their regions and coming to Inset. At least, they weren't saying that.
"I'm... truly sorry to hear that." Was all he could manage once Kaneda had stopped speaking. His own frown mirrored Kaneda's as he could only imagine the horrors he experienced.
"But hey... Cheers to a positive new start!" Champ said, forcing a cheerful note into his words. He couldn't even imagine losing Growlithe, whom was looking at him with his large inquisitive eyes. As much as he hated to admit it, his pokemon was a little too in touch with how he felt sometimes.
As Kaneda began to bury the egg Growlithe padded over and began to help, pushing dirt towards the man's hands with his nose. "If you've got Larvitar, why are you looking for these red gems? Especially if it's giving away fire type items?" Champ questioned, hoping he could change the topic enough to avoid the unpleasant feeling that burned in his chest.

Kaneda would never be against a change of subject. Namely, when that change of subject helped him to forget something as tragic as the reason he hightailed it out of what he would consider the most beautiful region there was. The sympathy from the both of them was appreciated, he guessed. He hadn't asked for it, and he wasn't sure what to do with it, but he guessed it had been nice to have somebody to tell and who understood he didn't just abandon his old team. They were taken... not left. Unfortunately. "Yep." His grin was toward the Growlithe helping him bury his Larvitar egg under the ground. How couldn't help but to be happy with how the Growlithe helped. One, less work for him. Two, it showed the heart of what would one day be a gentle giant. "I'm ready for new beginnings, that's for damn sure." Not that he was the type to simply forget what had happened and move on. It was an event that would forever shape who he had become. Not because he let it, but because he knew that dealing with it and using it as a building block for life was much better than ignoring it had happened or pretending that it hadn't. To the change of subject, Kaneda shrugged his shoulders as he patted the new mound of dirt between his legs. "I'm not entirely sure." That had him laughing. "Maybe for the sake of eggs? Maybe for the sake of collecting them? Mostly because they're just sort of here and I'm here burying the egg anyway." Why else would he be out and about deliberately collecting the gems? gems. 10 words. 296 notes. Savage

Champ was happy to see Kaneda was ready to change the topic. As a man he wasn't quite sure how to deal with feelings, especially the negative ones this conversation seemed to bring forth. Growlithe was also happy that Kaneda accepted his help. As he continued to work the dog like pokemon sat on his haunches and stared up at his trainer's new friend. Growlithe was happy to see Champ conversing with someone his own age. When he was first hatched, Champ had been a pretty driven and social young man, but that fell off pretty quickly at his father's death.
It seemed as if Champ was able to easily slip back into his old chatty ways however, as evident by the flow of conversation. With the change of topic, Champ went back to sifting through the dirt and pulling out the gems and putting them in a pile to his side.
Holding one up, he couldn't help but grin at the lopsided heart shape. "Look'it this, it's a heart." Champ said, placing it separately from the pile he was collecting with the mind to send it to his mother later. She was a sentimental woman and he pictured how she would smile upon opening the package.
"I suppose that makes sense," Champ replied to Kaneda's explanation of why he was collecting the gems. He couldn't quite understand why someone would do something 'just because' but he wasn't here to argue with the man's motivations. "You did previously mention you wanted to keep your team smaller, right? Any idea if you wanted a fire type? They're pretty much the best." Champ began, ready to launch into his speech about why.
