| Pokemon: | Brent took in the building with his golden eyes that sparkled in excitement. Just because he was doing this to save the family business didn't mean he didn't have to enjoy some aspects of his journey. Particularly getting his first pokemon.
He had a friend in school who had a poochyena everyone often played with. That dog got so much attention it was spoiled rotten and even when it evolved it wanted to be a lap dog. Brent walked in with a smile just thinking about a gentle giant Pokemon trying to be loving and yet way too heavy to be held.
"Excuse me," he said in a throaty voice walking up to the counter. "I'm new to the region and would like to obtain a Pokemon."
He was going to start by beating all the other regions gyms before beating his home regions. That way he would already be home and could settle down. Despite being a bit of a punk he did at least have some brains to go with it.
Also if he could make money in less savory ways he would prefer to do it away from home where his parents couldn't find out. He was already considering placing himself in underground fighting rings and dirtying his own hands. He didn't exactly want to use his Pokemon for such things. This was his problem so he would handle it himself for the most part.

She smiled brightly at the young fellow who entered looking all sorts of thrilled the be there, and that’s just what she liked to see! They had reactions of many varieties - some were scared, some were full of themselves...but this was a nice happy medium of polite but excited. Good combination! She picked up a clipboard full of forms, ”Sure thing, I’m Maggie and I’ll be assisting you today. If you can just fill this paperwork out.” she handed it across the counter to him, ”And we’ll get this ball rolling! As you go along there are some questions with asterisks if you can just verbalize them and get me up to speed on what I should know before we get started.”With that she sat back in her chair and got onto the computer to pull up the spreadsheets and charts to check and see where would be the best place to go at the moment. Any given day rangers could be doing patrols of biomes with problem populations, doing training with new recruits in tester biomes, or just doing repairs to the environments to make them as quality as possible for the specimens they kept there. It looked like today they’d be going to a forested swamp biome. The questions Brent would see were: name*, age, contact information, current or most recent occupation*, hometown*, experience with pokemon*, where those pokemon could be found now*, favorite types or species*, why are those your favorite*, least favorite type*, why*. While the way they went about the selection process was completely random, it was good to have those last pieces of information on hand, since they were a good indication of what kind of trainer they would be depending on just how they answered them. The last section explained how the selection process worked and had a place for a waiver to be signed in case of incident, clearing the ranger station of liability if a pokemon went on a rampage or the trainer messed up and did something wrong or to set them off, letting them know they’re not guaranteed a pokemon and can be denied at any time at the assisting ranger’s discretion. People did this at their own risk.

| Pokemon: | "Okay," Brent said taking the clipboard. So he had to say the answers to some of the questions out loud. Easy enough to do. "Brent Abraxas," he said as he began filling it out. He was quiet a moment til he got to the next section. "Cargo loader for a ferry." He had to earn money for his travels somehow. He had worked as a cargo loader for free passage into the region. Doing odd jobs like that was pretty normal for him. "I'm from Oldale in Hoenn," he said with a smile. He certainly loved his hometown. Even if he was working on the gyms and earning money he really should go home to visit regularly. "Never actually owned a Pokemon myself. I had a friend though with a poochyena we spoiled rotten. His name was Mutt and that dog even after evolving wanted to be a lap dog." He laughed a bit in response. "He'd squish us kids for loving. He's still alive and as sweet as ever at my friends house."In fact, Brent patted his pockets finding his phone to show her. It took him a moment but he brought up a picture of Mutt and him. The big dog laying in his lap as he said fair well. One ear drooped and the other stood straight up as he licked at his chin. There were a couple more of the same thing just blurry cause his friend had been laughing. "I have to say Dark types are a close second favorite because of him," Brent said placing his phone back in his pocket. "I love water types though. There is a pond north of town we kids use to go play in constantly. I always thought how cool it would be to breath under water cause I loved swimming. So I often wished to be a cool water type like Dratini or Poliwrath." "Can't really say I have a least favorite. I haven't had a bad enough experience with any type of Pokemon that would make me hate the entire type," which was truth. He didn't hate any type of Pokemon just a certain breed. "I don't like rodent types if that counts though. We've had trouble with them in the past. Constantly knocking over trash cans and the like."Eh, he kind of forgot to continue writing things down after talking about Mutt. He scratched his head sheepishly as he finished writing everything out. He just skimmed the bottom signing it without really bothering before handing it back. He was sure it would all turn out so long as he kept his temper in check. Which wouldn't be hard to do. She was polite enough and whatever Pokemon he would get would have to make a good impression if it wanted out of there, right? So it wouldn't benefit either of them to make the other angry. He waited a bit impatiently. Wondering if the questions would help determine where they went. Seriously if they went to a beach biome that would be awesome. Maybe he'd get a lapras, poliwag or barboach. He doubted they handed out extremely rare Pokemon like Dratini. Though it would be cool. TAGS: fitz Wordcount: 533 |

But it’s a common misconception for them to be water types since that’s their habitat. But those are all good answers about favorites and least favorites in my opinion. Especially with the personal connection to Mutt. If you’re all finished there we can head on up to the biome!” she said, briefly but politely letting him know he’d passed the brief interview that occurred before people were shown pokemon. They couldn’t let a random maniac back there after all! ”We’ll be going to the swamp biome. It’s a heavily forested area and if you’re not careful you’ll end up in the water. So be sure to stick to the path - it’s lit by lanterns to keep you on track. Just don’t stray and you’ll be alright.” she advised, picking up Todd’s pokeball to take with them in case it was needed. He was still recovering from a battle and she didn’t want to rouse him from his sleep time if they didn’t need him. She led the way back through a hall to the elevators and put in the code to get to the swamp biome. The doors would open on the marshy landscape where it always seemed to be dark and creepy, vines dangling from the long branched trees that formed a canopy overhead. She took the first few steps forward and ducked as the sound of flapping wings zoomed by her head. She was a brave ranger but she wasn’t an idiot. If she needed to get out of the way of a pokemon then by golly she would! ”Wonder what that was….” she mused, taking a few more cautious steps forward along the path. The sound of beating wings was heard again before the Murkrow came into view from a cluster of trees growing up out of the murky water. < Hwak! Hello! > she cawed, treading air as she watched the newcomers. They didn’t look like the usual swamp dwellers the bird was used to dealing with as unofficial tour guide of the biome. < Ya lost? > she asked.

| Pokemon: | Brent pondered the fact dratini wasn't water. One can't judge a Pokemon by their habitat he guessed. Or color since he thought about it. Dratini are blue too like horsea and tentacool and other water types. "Swamp cool," Brent has never been in a swamp. The mention of water made him smile. It was sure to have water types and grass types. He didn't particularly mind grass but his fingers were definitely crossed for water as he followed her. He'd have to stay on a lighted path huh. So it was probably pretty dark there then. He'd seen forests with thick canopies but usually some sun got through. Just really broken. It left him curious as to what the place actually looked like. Brent followed her out his gaze more on his surrounding than her. Thick trees easily six no eight times his height. Vines and the faint smell of mold. His feet even seemed to sink in the ground a bit because of the dampness. Without his paying attention though he was nearly hit upside the head by a bird. The ranger had ducked but he hadn't and he jumped nearly out of his skin at the near-miss. He looked behind him to see where it had gone but couldn't find it. He turned in a complete circle suddenly weirded out. "What a greeting," Brent comment and returned his attention to the ranger and the path. He stepped lightly behind her this time keeping his attention on her. A squawk had Brent looking to a black bird. Obviously a dark type...or maybe not. Shoot that dratini thing was going to have him second guessing all his first impressions now. "Yo," Brent responded. He knew basic pokespeak enough to know a greeting when he heard one. His eyes took in the murkrow his eyes resting on the fluffy feathered tail. It looked like a feather duster and it had him smiling at the thought. TAGS: fitz Wordcount: 324 |

It was always down to chance at the ranger station, so it was nice when things worked out this way. It was perhaps unfortunate that he’d nearly been clobbered by the bird, but he would have to get used to such less than graceful entrances when he started his journey in the wild. Pokemon had a way of letting you know they were there in some unique ways! She could still remember the time a weedle fell out of a tree and got tangled in her hair. That had been a nightmare. The monosyllabic greeting had her turning to look at Brent. Her heart sank a bit as she realized it was yet another person who didn’t know a lick of pokespeech. Most people who decided to make a career of caring for pokemon had at least some inkling of the ability. It wasn’t even that hard to pick up on if you were around pokemon enough. A little sigh was the only response she had for the moment - she couldn’t say much else as the murkrow began to squawk away a bit more, thinking he was just shy and not that he couldn’t understand her. < It’s okay honey, I don’t bite! Much! SQUAAAW SQUAW CAW CAAAW! > she chortled at her own joke. CC0066< Meowth got ya tongue? > she inquired, flying right up to him and landing on his shoulder, < Or maybe you’re hard of hearin hmmm? > she cawed a little louder into his ear, trying to make herself sound clearer. ”We’re actually here for him to find a starter!” Maggie interjected at last, hoping Brent didn’t mind how forward and at ease this murkrow was. ”And you’re the first pokemon to come along so you know what that means.” she said, knowing the murkrow had been here longer than she - the bird had hatched onsite a month before Maggie started a couple of years ago - and the dark bird knew the process of people getting ranger station starters. She was a friendly bird, maybe a bit overwhelming sometimes, but always meaning well.

| Pokemon: | Brent listened to the chatterbug who came right up to him. Her chatting right into his ear loud and having him finger his ear while Maggie talked back to the bird. He stopped when she stopped talking. "Yep that means I'm yours if you want me," Brent said looking to the bird. "And I bite back," he countered with a grin. He didn't mind her straightforward nature. That just meant she'd be always honest with him. Though the chatty part of her nature could also mean trouble. One step at a time though he was sure they would be able to handle what life chucked at them. "I'm more use to barks but I get your meaning well enough," Brent said making sure she knew he didn't pick up every word. "I'll be fluent yet though." He gave her a thumbs up before reaching over to pet the friendly bird. The chin and sides of the head near the ears were always popular. "Maybe I'll call you Feather Duster for that tail," Brent teased with a chuckle. He really did love the fact it looked like one. He wanted to pet it to but he figured she probably wouldn't like it. Each pokemon had their do not touch zone after all. He remembered the time he'd played with a zigzagoon up on the route above their home leading to the lake. You could pet that friendly critter everywhere but it's belly. You did that and it would curl around your hand and nip at you not quite drawing blood but it still hurt. He was definitely more careful after that. TAGS: fitz Wordcount: 270 |

It seemed he had a good enough grasp of pokespeech after all. Oh, she felt better already! She watched as he gave the friendly bird little scritches under her chin where feathers met beak and couldn’t help but to beam at the pair of them. Yes, this would do quite nicely. Murkrow gave another squawk of delight, < Oh-ho-ho, clever boy! Bite back! Caw-haw-haw! You’re a fun one! > she flapped her wings, taking to the air again with a nod before alighting onto a branch nearby. < Yes, I think I’d like that very much! It’s high time my apprentice took over the welcome wagon for the swamp anyway. Maggie, be a dear and pass along the news, would you? >Maggie chuckled and nodded, handing Brent his starter pack and a pokeball to capture the Murkrow with.

| Pokemon: | Brent took the bag with a smile as he turned over the pokeball in his hand. He didn't quite care for pokeballs since it was a lot like a cage. If the pokemon was with a person willingly they didn't really need it. Though larger pokemon could be a hassle so he could understand it to a degree. "Alright little lady let's get this show on the road," Brent said smiling. He held out the pokeball tapping on her lightly so she disappeared inside. It was always a wonder how they mastered this magic. He turned it over and released her once more onto his shoulder. "Welcome back," Brent chuckled shouldering the other bag on the opposite shoulder. "I really do need to think of a name for you. Munin maybe," he pondered it. He would have to discuss it at length with her a bit later. For now they should let the ranger get back to her duties. "Thanks for letting me down here to find my partner," he said to Maggie. "She'll be in good hands."TAGS: fitz Wordcount: 178 |
