"The very best, like no one ever wassss~" The blond hair maned sang as he made his way towards the base of the mountain where the ranger's main outpost was. A red dog-like pokemon barked happily by his feet, weaving in and out with each one of the man's long strides. "To catch them is my real test! To train them that's my-" He paused, pointing finger guns at the Growlithe who let out a well rehearsed howl that sounded awfully similar to "cause."
The day was an amazing fall day. Despite the changing of leaves and cool breeze that was beginning to chill the region, the base of the mountain was warm. Large wispy clouds floated through the sky, seeming to dance along with the cheerful man's step.
Champ couldn't help but laugh out loud at his own pokemon's enthusiasm. In fact, Champ was happy to see his pokemon in such good spirits. Today had been a long day coming and the man had been nervous about broaching the topic of trying to get another starter to well, his original starter.
It wasn't as if he viewed Growlithe as anything less than a fierce and loyal starter, but Champ wanted as much of a leg up as possible on his quest to be the very best. In fact, half of his goal for coming to this far out place was his desire to become a ranger.
Following his father's death Champ had his fire to be the champion of this region rekindled, with a fiercer and stronger determination than before. Starting as a ranger seemed like the best starting point. In fact, a second fierce ranger trained and bred pokemon would be an amazing help.
As the duo approached the post Champ ceased his singing and flashed the hand signal for Growlithe to halt by his feet. Dutifully the fire type sat down, staring up at his trainer happily as he awaited the next command.
Champ shouldered his bag as he stood outside of the outpost. It wasn't an imposing building but suddenly he felt himself filled with a moment of hesitation. Hadn't this been what his father and he had wanted from his birth? A tinge of sadness washed over him and Growlithe whined, bumping his head against Champ's shin in encouragement.
"Alright buddy, we got this. Let's go be the very best." He joked, suddenly back to the cheery youngster that he normally was. Placing his hand on the wooden door, Champ took a second to remember this moment as he pushed it open and crossed the threshold of what was to be the dramatic beginning of his rise to fame.
And as he talked himself up Champ found himself rather let down by the drab and unassuming. Growlithe peeked from behind his legs, peering past his trainer's body. <"Arf?"> Growlithe questioned deciding to push past his trainer and sniff at the desk.
Champ followed his pokemon to the desk, gently ringing the little golden bell that sat atop it. Hopefully it would summon a ranger soon as he was eager to begin his adventure.

I also know you can't stroll in and become a ranger, he doesn't. He has preferences for fire types or strong pokemon, either personality or appearance wise.

{ } Kieron had seen people come in here before. Looking to get another Pokemon whenever they had a companion at hand. Really, he didn't care for the idea that someone would want to double dip on it. But he always held out the slightest glimmer of hope that when someone arrived at the desk with a Pokemon already in hand they had other ideas about what they were doing here. Other than wanting to take a trip down to the biomes where Pokemon who needed a human partner resided. The ding sound of the bell called him from the side office. Away from the food he was heating up in the microwave. Being a vegetarian didn't really leave him with many options but that didn't stop him from trying to have a hot meal at the desk nonetheless. "Can I help you?" The fact that the guy had a perfectly healthy looking Growlithe next to him made the idea that he would be looking for a starter Pokemon skip Kieron's mind entirely.MADE BY VEL OF GS + WW

Champ waited in lobby once the bell chimed. For a moment the faint echo and gentle ticking of the wall clock was all that could be heard. In the back room he could hear shuffling after a moment. The man craned his neck from where he was standing, trying to catch a glimpse of the ranger who was coming to greet him. In his head, Champ pictured the man or woman he was about to meet to be a burly and decorated person. Someone who would instill confidence in the ranger mission plan.
Of course, what greeted him was the exact opposite. A rather willowy man with long black hair came out from the back office. Champ had to do his best to keep the cheery smile on his face and swallow the question about his credentials.
Even Growlithe seemed to share his confusion. The fire type walked over Kieron's feet, sniffing his shoes and giving him an inquisitive look.
At least Kieron has asked was he needed - keeping the question short and simple. It threw Champ off a little bit, having expected some sort of long speech. "Well um, hi. My name is Eric Sutton, just call me Champ, and this here is Growlithe," Champ said, pointing to Growlithe who had sat down by Kieron's feet.
"Anyway, We are here to my starter pokemon and well, join the rangers." Champ said plainly, squaring his shoulders and puffing his chest as he stated his intent. It was two simple enough requests, or so the man thought. In all the research he had done prior to venturing here, he had read that this was what the outpost did.

{ } Someone asking for a starter Pokemon when they quite clearly already had one was always astounding to him. When people came to the ranger station it was to make a bond with a Pokemon that needed it and that was ready to get back out into the world. But whenever someone already had a Pokemon it was hard to think that they would come to the ranger station for one. "You already have a healthy looking Growlithe. Why would we give you another Pokemon if you already have one?" His tone was flat but his expression narrowed a little bit. If the guy just wanted to get another Pokemon he could always go catch one in the wild. It was a little disrespectful to the Growlithe he already had to call a new Pokemon his starter Pokemon. Since he had started the journey with the fire type. "And you don't just waltz in to become a ranger. You need to prove yourself first. Go beat a couple gyms or something to prove you can actually handle a Pokemon." Or even take some requests off of the request board. That was always something they liked people to do. At least for the easy ones.MADE BY VEL OF GS + WW

Things were most definitely not going as planned, Champ decided. He was taken back by the man's dead pan tone and rather steely gaze. Was it not his job to offer out starter pokemon and ranger membership? That was what all the sources Champ had checked said.
For a moment he faltered, shifting his weight from foot to foot as he figured out what to say. Even Growlithe seemed puzzled by the interaction, cocking his head dramatically to the side as he stared up at Kieron.
"Well um... I had read that this is how you start your journey as a trainer." Champ finally admitted, hoping his statement didn't sound as unsure as he felt. Hadn't his father told him from the beginning the first step was to get a starter pokemon from the lab or rangers? It had never quite occurred to him that Growlithe was technically his starter pokemon. He had always pegged the pokemon as a companion, treating him more like a dog than pokemon in most aspects.
"And I am looking to start my journey." He finished, trying to push as much resolve into this statement as humanly possible.
But when he realized he couldn't become a ranger because he had simply waltzed in, his shoulders slumped a bit. There had been very little mention in anything he had read about 'proving' himself to anyone. Wasn't the fact that he had ventured here alone been enough? Wasn't his willingness to become a ranger enough? The man wished he could ask this but held his tongue back. He was not one to grovel. He would earn his way as a ranger, Champ decided inwardly. It seemed more meaningful that way and he was sure his father would be proud.
After his silent inner monologue Champ returned his attention to Kieron. "I will prove myself once we are done here," He began, his resolve once again steadied by the thought of making his father proud, "After I start my journey after this rite of passage - receiving a starter from the lab or rangers!"

{ } It was hard to explain to people that where you got your starter Pokemon wasn't nearly as important as the bond built by capturing them. It wouldn't feel the same to a ranger Pokemon if they knew they weren't an actual starter. But rather just a supplement to someone else's needs. "You've already done that though. When you get a Pokemon from here they're expected to be the ones forging the bond of first Pokemon. Not secondary. That bond is already with your Growlithe." Ben would be able to explain it more eloquently of course. Kieron just didn't have the patience to try and get the right point across. "Where you get your starter isn't important, but you've already got that bond with a Growlithe. The rite of passage bullshit is just, bullshit." He knew plenty of trainers who never went to the lab and rangers that had never been to the biomes. There was no one way to get your starter Pokemon. Regardless of what the media dipped into peoples brains.MADE BY VEL OF GS + WW

"Huh." Was the only reply Champ could manage after the tired speech Kieron recited. He rubbed the back of his head as he thought. This was not something he had ever considered. He looked down at Growlithe who had edged closer to him as he conversed with the ranger and was now basically sitting on his shoes, staring up at him with large brown eyes. The dog like pokemon's ploofy tail thumped happily on the floor as they made eye contact. He yipped happily, long tongue falling from his mouth as he smiled at his trainer.
"I had well... Never thought of that." Champ admitted. He was a bit taken back by this realization. His father had been very single minded and had instilled that into him. The journey to being the best was very linear, or so Champ had been told. You get your starter, you train it and catch more pokemon who in turn you then train, and then bam - you become a champion through hard work and a bunch of badges. At least, that was supposed to be how you did it, right? The journey had been always started with getting a starter from one of these two places and he had never quite considered Growlithe his starter.
It was a bit hard coming to terms with this. The idealistic beginning he had envisioned wasn't quite going as planned. Reaching down, her gently pet the fire-type's head and returned his goofy grin. "You're right. He is my starter." Champ said, more so to Growlithe than to Kieron. "I just can't believe it took me until now to realize it."
And then Champ was back to his cheerful and determined self. "Well, I suppose I'm not here to waste your time entirely. Since I made it here, may I at least get the starter pack so I can get to work on becoming the best trainer there ever was?" He asked, puffing out his chest as he finished his request. His mind was already two steps ahead on what his next goal was. He planned to get himself to route one and start building a team and then take on the gym. It would be helpful if he had a few items in his pocket first. Hopefully he hadn't bothered the ranger by his apparently asinine requests.

{ } He apparently wasn't a bad kid, just a little bit misguided. It happened sometimes. People got caught up in a certain ideal and it usually didn't work out well if it wasn't met. But the fact that he'd been able to turn this around without much of a fuss was a good thing. It meant that he wasn't going to have to kick him out of the ranger station entirely empty-handed. Grabbing one of the kits from the cabinet he slid it onto the desk for him to take. "Don't get caught up in trying to be the best. The best is subjective anyway." Just because someone was a strong trainer didn't mean they were a good trainer. Most people thought to be the best was about making your Pokemon fight until they couldn't anymore and then calling themselves the best whenever they beat a gym with battered and exhausted Pokemon. "Come back once you've got some experience under your belt, we'll see about making you a ranger then." Sitting back down at the desk he went back to the task he was supposed to be doing in the first place.

Champ took the offered kit, picking it up off the desk and looking into the neatly folded brown paper baggie. He opened the top, peaking in to see the assorted collection of items. He jostled it gently, letting it shift in the bag so he could get a good view of everything inside before tucking it away in the bag on his back.
Kieron's following comment disarmed him slightly. Try not to be the very best? The man clearly didn't know he was born to be it. That's what he had been told anyway, and it was something he had come to believe anyway. As a child you could only be told something so many times in a row before you couldn't help but take it as fact. Still, Champ wasn't inclined to correct the man on his error. He was happy to have received at least one of the three things he had come here for.
"Thanks for the items." Champ said finally, grinning from ear to ear. "I look forward to returning and becoming the best ranger you've ever seen!" He said triumphantly, raising his fist in the air to accent his point. "C'mon Growlithe, we've got some training to do!" He called, turning on his heels and practically skipping out of the ranger outpost, the fire type on his heals.
