▲ There was something extremely intimidating about devoting oneself to a dream, and then seeing it slowly but surely manifesting. This was the reality that Fane found herself in when she bid the islands of Alola goodbye, leaning over the railing of the ship as it pulled away from the harbor. The salty sea air, the distant call of Wingull, and the mesmerizing blue waves did wonders for her nerves. But now? Now she was here, at the Ranger’s Waypoint, and she could feel excitement- or was that anxiety?- bubbling in her stomach and creeping into her chest. It was hard to tell the difference between them. “Okay. Okay. Take a break, calm down, you’ve got plenty of time,” she muttered to herself. It was early yet; she found herself a park bench to sit and wait. Her chosen method of distraction was a little book her mother had bought for her a little over year ago as a birthday present- the inside cover read “For the start of your own journey. Love, Mom”. The cover was already well-worn, the spine cracked, pages here and there creased to mark important chapters. Fane flipped through the pages, grey eyes sweeping over familiar paragraphs, picking out the highlighted passages and notes she scribbled in the margins. The book- a tome, really- detailed various beginner methods for taming and raising pokemon. Most of the chapters spoke in the most general sense. But Fane’s favorites, the ones she could read and reread without growing bored, were personal accounts of rowdier pokemon- a runaway Tauros, an angry Flareon, daring yet touching success stories every one. Each of these were prefaced with a brief note of don’t try this at home, but she couldn’t help but daydream that one day, eventually, she was going to be the one taking care of those pokemon. When she was ready- or at least, as ready as she’d ever be- Fane closed the book with a solemn thud and tucked it away into her messenger bag. She felt as if she had just finished cramming for a final that was mere moments away, and scowled momentarily at herself. This isn’t school. Lots of people do this. You can too! She slung the bag over her shoulder, pulling her long, blonde hair to the side so it wouldn’t get caught under the strap. With one last deep breath, she walked the remaining way to the outpost. The door slid open as she approached. No turning back now. In the cheeriest voice she could manage, Fane spoke as she approached the desk. “Hi there, my name’s Fane Evans. I’m, ah, looking to get a starter pokemon.” She paused for a second, gripping the strap of her messenger bag perhaps a little too firmly. “I think I read that you rehabilitate pokemon here too, is that right?”@ outpost ● 473

I’m Maggie and I’m just the chick to help you out with that little mission of yours.” the amicable ranger said, lifting her boots up off the desk to thud them to the floor and stand on up to properly greet the trainer. ”We do indeed. A large percentage of our missions involve rescue of neglected pokemon, be it by human or natural means, and we rehabilitate them here in our biomes alongside other pokemon in a well-monitored habitat as close to what they’d have in the wild as possible. I’ll just need you to fill out this paperwork so we have your information on file and we can head down to those biomes and find your starter!” she informed her, handing over a clipboard with forms and one of her good pens. ”It’s mostly standard stuff like your name and contact information but if you could also give me an idea of your experience with pokemon up to this point, for instance do you have any pokemon of your own now or did you in the past, and if so to either where they might be now that you’re in need of a starter. If not, I hope you’ve prepared for the responsibility that comes with obtaining a pokemon - especially one from us. We can’t always promise they’ll be trainer ready like you get at the lab. Some of our pokemon can be pretty wild. Getting a starter this way isn’t for the faint of heart.” she advised, taking a few breaths here and there as she gathered supplies to pack up a starter kit for Fane for them to take into the biome together. As the girl filled out the paperwork Maggie also fiddled around on the computer on her desk to check which biomes were ready for them. She winced seeing the only available place was the most unnatural of natural biomes they could ask for. An industrial park complete with a polluted stream and massive garbage dump. Just great. She hoped Fane was wearing some sensible shoes at least. ✿ Junier of WW [newclass=.bbb-icon]margin: 0px; border: 10px solid #ffffff; width: 100px; height: 100px; -webkit-border-radius: 100%; -moz-border-radius: 100%;[/newclass] [newclass=.bbb-icon img] width: 100px; height: 100px; -webkit-border-radius: 100%; -moz-border-radius: 100%;[/newclass] [newclass=.bbb-txt] width: 200px; padding: 10px; margin-top: 40px; margin-bottom: 40px; color: #888; font-family: calibri; font-size: 10px; text-align: justify; [/newclass]

▲ The woman behind the desk introduced herself, and Fane smiled brightly in reply. Maggie seemed pleasant and almost eager to help her, and something akin to relief washed over the girl. After all, enthusiastic teachers were often the best teachers- maybe the same applied here, too. “Oh, that’s amazing!” Fane released the strap of her bag and half clapped her hands. She was going to elaborate on her excitement, but the ranger held out a clipboard to her, and she took it instead. She started scribbling answers onto the paper, her handwriting a messy scrawl of half-cursive and half-print, barely legible at first glance. “Yeah, no problem. I’ve never had any pokemon of my own, but my mom- she’s back home in Alola- is a trainer, and I grew up with some of her pokemon around the house.” She paused for a moment, concentrating on finishing the last form. “Actually, I think she’s going to start training for the Island Challenges again, now that she has the time.”Maggie’s last statement made Fane pause, wondering if it was directed specifically at herself or if she said that to everyone who came in. Probably the latter?, she figured, but she sucked in a breath and tried to steel herself. Wild pokemon. Got it. The anecdotal chapters in the back of her book suddenly seemed a lot more real in her mind. If she noticed the ranger’s wince as she tapped away at the computer, it didn’t show. Fane continued with the tangent she meant to include earlier to fill the silence. “I want to work at a rehabilitation center sometime in the future. That’s my long term goal, at least. It’s really noble work… Just the impact that it has is really inspiring.” Her grey eyes lit up as she spoke, even if the explanation wasn’t as eloquent as she would have liked it to be. Sometimes it was hard to find the right words for how important she believed this was. Fane shuffled her feet as she held out the clipboard to Maggie. “Do you have any, ah, tips? Or suggestions maybe?” Whether she was asking about her dream of becoming a rehabilitator, or the rapidly approaching task of catching her own pokemon, Fane herself wasn’t sure. She just knew she’d be grateful for any information the ranger might have to offer. Reading about pokemon could only get her so far. <3

I’ve always wanted to go there. Is it as beautiful as everyone says it is?” Maggie asked dreamily. Maybe some day… ”That’s a very noble ambition you have. I’m sure you’ll get there one day!” she added, her tone encouraging and gentle. She glanced over the paperwork and marked the biome they were going to with her code to show they were occupying it before stepping away from the desk and motioning for her to follow along. Todd the Torchic hopped up from his resting place under the desk and followed along behind them to assist if things got hairy. ”As far as tips...just be yourself. And be patient. Patience is always a good thing. There’s no point in rushing anything you do in life. You don’t want to do a job fast and twice when you could do it once and right.” it sounded generic and that was honestly on purpose since she wasn’t sure what kind of information she sought. So the advice she gave was applicable to anything in life, in her opinion. They reached the elevators and Maggie let Todd and Fane in first before entering behind them and tapping in the code to go to the landfill. Once arriving, the elevator dinged and the doors opened onto what resembled a wasteland. Artificial and safe smog made the manufactured horizon difficult to see into. One may imagine a pollution riddled city could be seen in the shifting haze. Mountains of trash rose up around them and a winding river of neon yellow snaked through the entirety of the biome. ”Okay, so the way this works is, the first pokemon that makes an appearance is the one you’ll be given...if you can manage to capture it. A lot of people think the only way to catch a pokemon is to battle and that’s just not true. Many of them can be reasoned with and appeased. For those that are a bit more wild, however, Todd and I are here for backup and will be able to keep you safe. Ready to go?” she finished, gesturing towards the biome for her to step on out if she was ready. ✿ Junier of WW [newclass=.bbb-icon]margin: 0px; border: 10px solid #ffffff; width: 100px; height: 100px; -webkit-border-radius: 100%; -moz-border-radius: 100%;[/newclass] [newclass=.bbb-icon img] width: 100px; height: 100px; -webkit-border-radius: 100%; -moz-border-radius: 100%;[/newclass] [newclass=.bbb-txt] width: 200px; padding: 10px; margin-top: 40px; margin-bottom: 40px; color: #888; font-family: calibri; font-size: 10px; text-align: justify; [/newclass]

▲ Fane smiled widely. “It’s amazing, especially the beaches and the ocean. And we always love having visitors.” A faint blush colored her cheeks at Maggie’s support and her gaze lowered. Truthfully, she hadn’t told that many people about her plans to become a rehabilitator. A disinterested ‘oh’ was the most common response; the other an onslaught of questions about her plans, her classes, her specialization. The questions were by far the worst, because her plans were so... amorphous. Learn about caring for pokemon, learn what types she liked and which needed the most help, gain hands-on experience- all necessary points that sounded just vague enough to imply a lack of research. So free support and enthusiasm from someone (other than her mom) was enough to make her flush. As for having patience, she’d keep it in mind...But it was all too easy to be disappointed in herself when things didn’t go at neatly or as quickly as she liked. Fane paused outside the elevator, letting the cute Torchic enter first before following. Anticipation prickled at her skin as the elevator began moving. She held onto the strap of her messenger bag, thumbs rubbing at the grain of the fabric to give her hands something to do. A hand flew to cover her mouth and nose as the door opened, expecting a wave of nauseating fumes, but it fell away when she realized that it didn’t smell nearly as bad as the thick smog let on. “First pokemon, reason with them. Got it.” She nodded firmly, stepping out of the elevator with feigned confidence. If someone had asked Fane to name some biomes, this one wouldn’t have even made it on the list. Now that she thought about it though, she supposed it made sense. Pokemon were everywhere and had different needs. “I guess you really do have a place for every pokemon here,” she said in wonder, mostly to herself. Evidently she had a lot more to learn. Unsure of where exactly to go, Fane let herself wander, keeping an eye on the ground lest she step on a shard of glass or stray metal. Her tennis shoes offered great support for walking and running, but they’d get torn to shreds if she wasn’t careful. A thought bubbled in the back of her mind as she walked: what if no pokemon came out to meet her? Surely that was a possibility. I’ve been out here for all of a minute, Fane berated herself, biting the inside of her lip. At least give it five. Then you can let yourself worry.<3

Hey, you do have rangers there, right?” she asked, curious now. She knew every region was different, and had heard they didn’t even have actual gyms in Alola. So maybe they didn’t have rangers either? Once they arrived at the biome and stepped out, she nodded in return to Fane’s enthusiastic and confident response, and couldn’t help but to smile at her observation of how out of place the biome type was, ”Yes, we try our best to duplicate whatever natural environment certain pokemon would be found in - no matter how unnatural that environment actually would be.” she added with a chuckle as she trailed behind Fane, letting her lead the way and let the Pokemon come to her. And as if on cue, one of the piles of rubbish began to shift. Maggie, grapped the strap of Fane’s messenger bag, tugging her gently out of the way of the toppling debris as the Pokemon revealed herself to them, bits of garbage still stuck in her rolling oozing body. As amorphous as Fane’s ideas of how to go about her dream career, the Alolan Grimer trickled out to greet them, < Hello, kids! > she spewed, her crystallized toxin teeth clattering together as she managed to produce phonetic sounds and lift one dripping green arm to wave. She seemed oblivious to the fact that she was toxicity personified, instead carrying herself with an odd sense of dignity and confidence, slurping forward and leaving a trail of poison in her wake on the stinking ground. < Welcome to the dump! >”Thank you, Miss Grimer.” Maggie said, picking her Torchic up delicately but not in any rude way. It was simply a precaution, and one the Grimer was used to people taking. She didn’t take any offense to it. She was sure the ranger had people do the same thing with their grass types when little Todd got fiesty. < Here, let me just. > a shuddering slopping slosh reverbed from her body as she tried to suck her oozing in, almost like someone snorting snot down their throat to clear their sinuses. < It’s easy to forget I shouldn’t let it all hang out when I’m here all the time! > she said, the good-natured laugh that followed coming out as a wet bark. < How do you do, Miss…> she then said, turning her attention fully to the girl in front of her with the sun-kissed skin and blonde waves still holding the light scent and volume that only came from salty sea air. She smelled like home to the grimer and she remembered what it had been like all those years ago before she’d set out on her tour of the many regions of the world before ending up here.

▲ “I don’t know if they’re called rangers?” Fane said, her voice lilting up towards the end as if asking a question. “But we definitely have a lot of people interested in taking care of pokemon and conservation- so I bet you’ll find something similar to the rangers, even if we don’t have an official organization. At least, not on Akala Island, and I haven’t really been to the others so I can’t say for sure…” She was rambling now, as she usually did when she didn’t quite know something for sure, but also didn’t want to give an unsatisfactory answer. Disappointing people- especially someone she was starting to have admiration for- was the last thing she wanted to do. Now that she was over the initial surprise of there being an industrial waste biome, Fane was overcome with amazement at how extensive the thing was. How many pokemon were there here? How far back did the biome extend? Did rangers wander through to check on the pokemon- gosh, that must take a lot of them, especially considering how many pokemon they could potentially be housing in the whole facility- and that wasn’t counting the rangers who went out to rescue pokemon, and - Her thoughts were interrupted by a tug on her bag from Maggie, and Fane stopped abruptly. A pile of garbage was shifting. On another day in another circumstance that might have terrified her- and worry flashed across her face for a heartbeat- but when she saw the green-tinged sludge it was quickly replaced with elation. A grimer- and one native to her homeland! Sure, Heahea City wasn’t the biggest city in Alola, but they still had their own grimers to take care of excess waste. To think that she would find one all the way out here…! Maggie thanked the pokemon and Fane nodded enthusiastically in agreement, for once too happy for words to come to mind. “Fane, Fane Evans,” she finally answered, stepping a bit closer to the grimer as she spoke. “It’s great to meet you by the way!” Oh gosh- was she being too excited? Overwhelming? She hadn’t actually thought about what she was going to say. Too late though- she was here, she’d think of something in her excitement. “I guess I can tell you a bit about myself?” She offered tentatively. “I’m from Heahea City in Alola, uhm, I did a lot of swimming during school, and I was always a fan of science classes and I read a lot when I have the time...” Did pokemon care about that kind of stuff (did people, for that matter)? “What about yourself?” She invited the grimer, eager to hear what she had to say. New meetings could always be a bit awkward, at least on Fane's end, and she didn't want to mess this up. No worries! Sorry about the delay on my end too! ^^;

In fact, the Grimer that made her appearance was proof positive of those efforts. Grimers from other regions had been brought in to clean up toxic waste as it was in their nature as a species to absorb toxins. They turned into living waste treatment plants, their anatomy and coloring changed with this new excessively toxic diet, and they grew the little teeth-like crystals present in the lady Grimer’s mouth where the poisons were in a concentrated form - miraculously leaving the exterior of the Grimer non-poisonous. It still wasn’t the most pleasant thing to touch one - but you wouldn’t end up sick from a hug either. And that had to be an improvement for the intelligent creatures fully capable of affection just as any other affectionate pokemon would be, to be able to be close to their friends and trainers without bringing them harm. If it had been anyone else she’d have given that little spiel aloud - but something about the way Fane’s face lit up at the sight told her it must have been a familiar one. She knew all about it! The ranger took her usual cue and stepped back a few steps to let them interact together, still nearby for any questions. < Fane oh, what a pretty pretty name! > the Grimer gurgled, clapping her mitts together with a sloppy squelch, < So nice to meet you as well, little lady! I’ve been to Heahea back in the day - you were probably just a tot then! I worked with maintenance at the Tide Song Hotel for many years. > she added with a curt nod. < They were always so good to me. The people of Heahea are known for their hospitality - you must be very proud to come from there! Did you prefer to swim in the ocean or the pool? Or a bit of both - you probably couldn’t avoid the sea living on a coastal town like Heahea, hm? > she suggested with a goopy grin. < I don’t read much per se, it’s hard to turn the pages without mucking the book up. But the trainer before my last one introduced me to audiobooks and they’re quite the little miracle! And I loooove to travel - I’ve not been able to see much of this region, Inset, but I’ve been to countless others over the years. I’m like a rolling stone! I’d love to see more of this place outside of the biome the rangers have graciously given me a home in. I haven’t been here long at all but I’m already itching to get to slugging along! > she was unfamiliar with the practice of trainers coming for starters and smoothed a piece of trash from out of her ripples, < So what brings you here, Fane? Are you a new ranger in training? Getting a tour of the facilities? >

▲ “Ah, what a coincidence! The Tide Song Hotel is gorgeous!” Fane gushed. She never really had a need to stay there as she lived in the same city, but its ornate white walls on the northern beach were iconic, and the guests always raved about it. “And I guess we have you to thank for that! I’m glad to hear they treat the pokemon there as nicely as they treat the guests, too.” The blonde never suspected otherwise, but it was always nice to have positive confirmation, and knowing that fact warmed her heart. “As for swimming- a little of both! The pool is great for competitive swimming and laps, but nothing beats how relaxing the ocean can be, or how alive it is with wildlife.” At this rate, she was going to make herself homesick in no time if she kept this up. Luckily, the grimer changed the subject. Books (of the audio sort) and travel- hey, they had something in common already! Fane found herself drawn in by grimer’s charm and obvious enthusiasm for life and new experiences, her shoulders loosening and relaxing as the Alolan pokemon spoke. A permanent wide grin plastered itself on her face. “Oh gosh no, I think I’m a little too young to join,” Fane blushed and drew a hand towards her chest as she spoke, flattered by the idea. It wasn’t a bad thought, though- maybe once she turned 18, had some experience under her belt, and saw more of the region, she’d apply. Maybe she could be one of the people who took care of the pokemon after they were rescued! She filed the thought away for later, letting herself focus on the present moment. “I’m actually here looking for a starter pokemon- a companion to join me on my journey around Inset. And if you’d like to come with me today, I’d be, well, really excited and, um, honored.” Her tongue tripped over itself with that last part, though not out of insincerity. She cast a quick sheepish glance back at Maggie just to make sure nothing had changed in the past few minutes that would prevent her from leaving with the grimer- provided she agreed, of course. It's no problem~! ^^ <3

She's worked in everything from maintenance to sanitation and loves getting herself dirty when she works. She loves changing opinions of Grimers and challenging the norms, using her strengths and even her weaknesses to her advantage. This is most easily seen in the fact that she used her work ethic and natural toxin cleanup abilities to travel to different regions and see and interact with the different cultures found there. She considers herself worldly and well traveled and came to the ranger station once she came to the region to be quarantined and just stuck around taking a little vacation from vacations.
