"Yo, Meg," Aiden called out to the panting pig. She had her nose pressed to the ground, sniffing out the peculiar gems like a bloodhound, desperately hunting for more shiny things she could add to the little sack dangling from her neck. She stopped the search at the sound of her trainer's voice and looked up. "It's break time." He gestured toward their cooler. (Aiden's backpack and his red-and-tan egg were both leaning against the cooler, right out in the open--he figured everyone was too busy gathering gems to steal from each other.) Nutmeg trundled off toward their things while her large stomach swayed to the rhythm of her hoofsteps. "Phew, that was a workout!" Once she reached the cooler, Nutmeg shook her head to rid herself of her bag, which was about halfway full. "You're lucky pigs can't sweat, because I would be sti-inky," she said with a laugh. Aiden laughed right along with her and pulled up the cooler lid. "Sounds like you need some more water, then." He pulled out a little bowl (it was intended for extra large dogs, like the Arcanines of the world, but it worked for thirsty piglets, too) and dumped the majority of a cool water bottle inside. "Drink up, honey." He stroked Nutmeg's back while she went to town on the bowl. Her legs ached from hours of gem hunting, but she didn't care. If anything, Nutmeg was elated by the feeling. How many calories must she have burned? A lot, for sure! While Nutmeg got rehydrated, Aiden grabbed a second water bottle for himself. He took a sip and added her gem collection to his. "We're making good progress!" Nutmeg nodded eagerly but was too busy drinking her body weight in water to respond at the moment. They weren't close to the valuable prizes but Aiden wasn't a negative enough person to see it that way. They'd collect more after they rested for a while, and then more again tomorrow, and eventually they'd have what they needed. He wasn't worried; no matter how gems were collected, there were always more. The situation would have begged an obvious question to a more educated trainer: why was something in seemingly infinite quantities deemed valuable? Aiden didn't think to question it. [ ] larvitar - third thread Alright, so these strange little gems peaked his interest. He couldn't help himself. It was odd that there were red, blue, and green ones. That was odd, right? Wasn't that strange? Kaneda looked down at the egg under his arm like it was supposed to answer the question for him. He knew better, it wouldn't, but he liked to pretend that maybe it could read his mind. If only so he could lazily avoid the contact needed with other humans that happened to be necessary for a healthy mental state. Speaking of other humans, the path on the dry plain beneath his feet led him into view of a Tepig and its trainer. They were looking for gems - at least he assumed they were - before the Trainer called his Tepig over to him. He wondered, briefly if he should leave them alone, but he figured why not say something in passing? If it struck up a conversation then fine. With a greet in the form of a wave, Kaneda smiled at the Trainer and its adorable pig. "Hiya." He couldn't help but eye the Tepig. It was something he'd never seen before. "Anything good on this end of the dry plain?" He spoke with a tone that said he knew the Trainer, but really it was just Kaneda knowing no social boundaries and treating everybody like a pal. words. 237 notes. nailed it! Clover

Aiden returned the stranger's smile and wave without a second thought. They had similar views on strangers, Aiden and Kaneda; everyone in the world was a friend until proven otherwise. Nutmeg looked up from her water bowl just long enough to smile nervously at the stranger before going back to her drinking. Leaving the socializing to her trainer seemed like the best outcome for everyone involved. At the boy's question, Aiden gestured toward the backpack at his feet. Its largest pocket was unzipped and sunlight glinted off the generous pile of ruby gems inside it. "A bit, yeah," he called back, clearly proud of the work he and Nutmeg had done so far. They had more back at the hotel. There was no sense in lugging every single gem they had found around; if anything, carrying around all those gems and his pretty egg was asking for a broken back. Until he was closer to being able to afford the pedestal salesman's egg, he wasn't going to bother carrying his full collection with him every day. "Doesn't seem like any one area's better than another, though," Aiden added with a shrug. "I've been out here a few times. There's always gems. And there's usually other people looking all around the area. No one seems to, uh, have difficulty with it." The gem hunt was probably the most peculiar thing he'd ever seen. But if it meant he got a potentially-fire-type egg out of it, well, fine. He certainly wouldn't turn his nose up at the fire gem and fire stone that came with it, either. "I'm Aiden, by the way, and this here's the world's greatest starter pokemon! Her name's Nutmeg." Nutmeg's rapid inhalation of water had slowed by that point and she looked up at Kaneda nervously. World's greatest starter... On the one hoof, hearing her trainer talk about her that way had her stomach all aflutter--but on the other hoof, it was an awful lot to live up to. "Hi." A quivering, one syllable introduction felt horribly unbecoming for (allegedly) the world's greatest starter, but it was all she could manage. Aiden grinned fondly at her before switching his attention back to Kaneda. [ ] larvitar - third thread There was no lie in the way the piglet moved around nervously, sort of hesitant. Nervous, that's what it was. And adorable. Like, so much so Kaneda wasn't sure he could look at it for very long after the snort he assumed was probably the pig trying to greet him. His attention turned to the kid. "Yeah, sort of both? I just got here, but I don't mind the break. These things are a little strange, aren't they?" He gave a small chuckle before glancing over at the pig and her water. He decided to plop himself down with the Trainer and his starter. "Cutie. Boy or girl?" He motioned toward the starter with a smile. Kaneda didn't often advertise that he was Poketalk deaf. It was just something he could never pick up on. He blamed his lake of memory, often forgetting people if they didn't check in twice a year... words. 162 notes. Clover

"Very strange," Aiden agreed. The boy sat down near Nutmeg and she readjusted herself, stretching her body out as much as possible so her rotund stomach wasn't quite so visible. She was so concerned with minimizing her unsightly (in her opinion, at least) body fat that Kaneda's question didn't register until Aiden had already begun answering. "Nutmeg's a girl and she's gonna be big enough to wallop everyone one day! The lady at the lab--Tate, that was her name--told me her dad--Nutmeg's dad, I mean, not Tate's--was a Camerupt, so she'll probably take after him as she evolves, even though she got her mom's species. Aren't genetics amazing?" Everything was said in damn near one breath. Storytelling was not Aiden's forte, to say the least; if he'd chosen writing as his occupation, rather than pokemon training, he probably would've starved. There was just so much information he wanted to pass on to his new friend! Once his spiel was done, Aiden took another gulp from his water bottle and looked back at Kaneda. "How 'bout you? [ ] larvitar - third thread This kid was a freaking rocket. Once he started, he just kept talking, which was plenty entertaining enough that Kaneda wasn't bored as he went on about his Nutmeg. His eyes glanced to the Pokemon every once in a while and he couldn't help but think she was being a little strange. If he were a fire pig, he would relax and lounge around all day. But she seemed stiff, almost. Maybe she was just ready to wallop everyone now. Either way, Kaneda shook his head at the question asked. "Nope, not yet. Well, I mean, do eggs count? I have a Pokemon egg..." Kaneda smiled and shrugged his shoulders. "I wish I knew what the parents were or if the parents even realized they had an egg. Who knows, maybe it was buried and perfectly safe until somebody dug it up. With the type of egg it is, you're supposed to bury it since it likes to be underground. Hatches out and eats dirt. Crazy thing."words. 176 notes. Clover

Aiden slid off the top of his cooler so he was sitting in the grass next to Nutmeg. He idly scratched her back while Kaneda gathered his thoughts. "Yeah, eggs definitely count! Is that like one of those... Larvitar things?" Aiden rarely focused on pokemon types that weren't fire, but he did try to know the subtleties of pokemon who were strong against fire types. That is, he tried to learn about their moves and abilities and common battle tactics--location and diet and breeding things, well... that was all a bit out of Aiden's scope, so to speak. He only knew of one pokemon line who ate dirt and it was Larvitar. There were probably dozens of others out there in the world--they just weren't fire types, so Aiden hadn't noticed. "That's nuts, though! Are you supposed to, like, rebury it when it gets close to hatching and hope it eats its way out to you or.... what?" It was a problem he'd never considered, as a non-breeder and a non-ground-type-aficionado. The back rub had a soothing effect on the self conscious piglet and she finally found her voice. "Is it healthy for them, if they... don't hatch below ground?" It was a good question, and Aiden had no idea. So he shrugged and looked at Kaneda expectantly, utterly unaware that Nutmeg might as well have been speaking Greek for all the boy could understand. [ ] larvitar - third thread Everything asked was a great question. Kaneda wasn't sure where to start because he was winging it. "Yep, it's like, one of those Larvitar things. I'm hoping it is a Larvitar thing, otherwise, I've been burying it for no reason..." he sounded less than content on that being an option. "That's what I'm doing so far. I honestly haven't the foggiest idea when in the hell it's gonna hatch or the hell it's actually supposed to hatch. Or how. Or if it's supposed to be buried. Or if it's not. I'm sort of winging it." He scratched the back of his head in thought, shrugging his shoulders. "I just know it likes dirt and that there was a magazine I was reading that said it was good to bury it because that's what they do in the wild. I'm no momma Tyranitar, but I figure, what the hell. I can bury the little thing." A small smirk crossed his features at the idea of him as a mother. Him. Kaneda. A mother. It was comical and had him sort of laughing. He glanced at the Tepig before looking back to Aiden. Part of him wanted to ask what the pig had said and part of him wondered if he'd answered whatever question asked. If the kid brought it up, he'd address it. Otherwise, he'd let it slide. He found that the easiest way to go about his 'condition.' words. 267 notes. Clover

The way the boy repeated Larvitar things earned Kaneda a snort of laughter from Aiden. "I'm sure all your hard work'll pay off." By which he meant he hoped the egg actually was a Larvitar so Kaneda wasn't wasting all his time. The sentiment wasn't worth much, all things considered. The egg either was a Larvitar or it wasn't. There was no middle ground, and no amount of burying and praying and hoping would turn a non-Larvitar egg into a Larvitar. But maybe things would work out for him. Aiden hoped they would. Nice people deserved nice things. Aiden stroked his likely-a-Heatmor egg and grinned appreciatively. "I don't know jackshit about when this one's hatching either, so join the club." At least Heatmor didn't live underground. Suddenly, his job as the caretaker of an egg sounded much, much easier. The joking idea of the club bounced around in Aiden's head and, like all of the thoughts that Aiden entertained for longer than three seconds, it quickly found itself spilling out of Aiden's mouth. "Wouldn't it be great if that kinda club actually existed? A bunch of idiots who don't know squat about eggs, getting together to worry about how bad they are with eggs? If that were a TV show, I'd watch it."Nutmeg, meanwhile, fell quiet once again. Her question hadn't been answered, per se, but it had been addressed: Kaneda didn't know. That was good enough for her so she scooted over, closer to her trainer, and rested her chin on his knee. "How many times have you buried the darned thing? Sounds like a routine thing for you."WORDS ► 270 POKEMON ► nutmeg the tepig NOTES ► wizz • +5 ruby gems (25)

[ ] larvitar - third thread At the mention of a TV show and club about people who didn't know shit about their eggs and just ran around worried like a bunch of Pidgey's with their heads cut off had Kaneda letting out a laugh. "I'd watch it, even if I were on it." He admitted, looking to the cute little red pig as it nuzzled her Trainer. She was self-conscious, he could tell that now. The way she had stood straight up earlier to see possibly thinner. The way she moved toward her Trainer like she did just moments ago. It was wonderful to see that she had such trust in Aiden, and he could tell just by speaking with Aiden now that he had a very good heart and would treat that starter of his very well. No mistake at all about that. Then the dreaded question about the egg came up and Kaneda was relaxing where he sat, the egg in his lap, a small nod in his features. "Every damned day. I don't think it minds. It seems happy. I mean, it doesn't seem unhappy so I guess I'm doin' something right. It jabs and moves around and wiggles like eggs are supposed to, showing signs of life and shit like that. So I guess I'm doing something right." A bit of relief was found in his tone as he continued his thought. "But yeah, every day. I find a spot, bury it, and hope for the best. This time around, I thought I'd bury it in the hotter terrain, just in case it wanted to switch up where it got buried. I haven't found a spot yet today... but we're working on it." A shrug indicated that he didn't much care where he buried it, as long as the thing got buried and stayed happy, he was happy. words. 329 notes.
