Starting out in a new region isnโt so bad once you research and snoop around enough to get a feel of the land. This wasnโt his first day on Inset. As a matter of fact, Kaneda had been in Inset for a week and a half so far he loved it. The whole region was completely different from Johto, or even most of the other regions he had been at. What really surprised him was the connections with Pokemon there. They seemed alive, and as integrated into the everyday life as the people - if not more so. It was astonishing, refreshing, and so far a blast to admire. Honestly, he couldnโt wait to get a starter Pokemonโฆ which was apparently the way to go about getting a Pokemon legally if you didnโt want to go through the rangers. Which, he most certainly, did not.
So, he asked around the pub and got the information he needed to figure out that you apparently had to make an appointment. It was best to go in fifteen minutes early to sign paperwork and the like, make sure you checked out legallyโฆ Good thing his name was a hoax and didnโt technically hold any legal ground anyway. Being an orphan has its perks, he supposed. Though the more he thought about this meeting the more he sort of felt like he was going to a doctor's appointment rather than going to get a starter.
Appointment made, he waited out his time until the appointment by busying himself with seeing the village. It was a cute little village, sort of reminded him of New Bark Town- which he only visited once and sort of on accident. Either way, the people were nice and he even saw a few different Pokemon on the outskirts of the village that seemed promising. He heard rumors in the village that apparently there were Abras in the areaโฆ and that excited him. Sort of made him wonder if he could get one as a starter. High hopes, right?
Entering the lab, Kaneda made his way toward the counter to check in. He moved his hand over the sign in sheet swiftly before glancing around. He moved to plant himself in one of the waiting seats, grabbing a magazine and relaxing into the seat. There was no need to be impatient, so he simply decided to wait his time until he was called. And why not enjoy some strange Pokemon Times sort of magazine while he was at it? One leg crossed over the other at the knee and he perched the magazine on his knee. He propped his head up on his hand and his elbow on the arm of the chair while he used his other hand to steady the magazine and flip through it.
NOTES. I think itโd be comical if he got a Gastly? But Iโd love for him to get an Abra since heโs a fan of the psychic pokes. Or maybe the Johto starters cause heโs familiar with them? Who knows, I donโt. Good talk.

It had been a long road for Xiu so far. As soon as she'd gotten the call that they were doing interviews at the lab she had applied. Then as soon as she got called in she booked her train ticket. Of course, when they finally called her back to tell her she'd passed the selection process she had wasted no time in actually moving to Cassiopeia. Everything had moved fast and while she had been surprised by the reasoning of finding new assistants she couldn't turn down the job. Not when it was the chance of a lifetime. She was sure that the former assistant would love being a gym leader. Probably.
But for now, she was behind the desk, taking calls and reading a book that she had brought in with her. A bag of chips opened on the desk that was already half empty made her stomach rumble. She'd skipped breakfast this morning and this was the only thing in the break room that didn't need to be microwaved. Xiu hadn't wanted to dip into that until at least lunch time. But of course, that meant that someone was going to call in with an appointment around that time. Her lunch would have to wait even longer... But that was what she got for skipping meals.
Her mom had always told her she would do it one of these days and it would ruin her day. Xiu hoped that wasn't today. Someone entered the lab as she stared wistfully at the clock, hoping that this would go well. She'd managed to survive this long so far so it wouldn't be too bad. The biggest thing she was worried about was this being the first try on her giving someone a Pokemon on her own. Weeks of training had prepared her for his though and she wasn't going to let the lab down.
Standing with a clipboard full of paperwork and a small pen clipped to the edge of it she couldn't help but feel the butterfree rise in her stomach. It was nerve-wracking but... she was going to be able to do it. She was sure. They wouldn't have hired her if she wasn't competent! "Hello there! My name is Xiu and I'll be helping you today!" She held out the clipboard for him to take since before anything else they had to fill out papers. "As you fill those out I will find Pokemon for you! Do you have any preferences towards type?" They weren't obligated to give people exactly what they wanted but asking always helped to get a feel for the person. pokrmon here [googlefont=Open+Sans]

The moment there was a shift in the room he moved one of his hands to hold his place in his magazine before moving his eyes over to whoever had moved. Ah, the assistant. His eyes softened at the fact that the movement was an assistant and not something terribly dangerous. Though, rumors at the pub would suggest some of the assistants were a bit on the dangerous side.
Kaneda gave Xiu a decent smile before blinking at the clipboard. โYep, they weren't kidding, paperwork.โ The smile didn't fade as he looked at the one who gave the clipboard and papers to him. โThanks.โ He told her before glancing it over. He moved his eyes back up to hers and shifted up in his seat, setting the magazine aside since it was no long needed.
โType preferenceโฆโ Kaneda shrugged his shoulders lightly and continued his eye contact as he spoke. If only out of habit. Some would say it was polite to hold eye contact while you spoke and when he was younger that had definitely been drilled into him by the Geishas. โPsychic is definitely my favorite. And poison. Ghost isn't so bad, steel is decent. But overall? Probably psychic.โ Well that took a lot more effort than he meant to get out.
Slowly his fingers rubbed the clipboard, or reminded him she needed him to fill the papers out. He looked down at it and glanced the words over. Most of it just required a signature stating he was himself and stating he was responsible for the Pokรฉmon given and caught from this point forward- typical things. He signed his name where it was needed and checked boxes while writing notes. There was even an area asking how well he understood Pokรฉmon. He was sure to scribble down, โPoketalk deaf; but competent in understanding their cues and body language over time.โ He hoped that was legible and understandable.

The types he asked for were generally ones reserved for more experienced trainers... Without getting to know him a little bit more she wasn't going to actually be able to hand them over as options. But at least she probably had plenty of other Pokemon he would be interested in. It was all about the personality, to be honest. People who just selected a Pokemon based on type were usually doomed to disagreements or an unharmonious partnership. Xui had heard horror stories about people who weren't able to get along with the lab Pokemon because of something or another. She didn't want that to end up being the case though. Especially not on her first try.
So she could at least show him two for now and if she got a better feeling for him... Maybe a third could be something a little out of the norm? It wasn't necessary that she show all three at once after all. "I will be right back!" Walking to the cabinet she began to search through it carefully. He seemed to be a beginner so... Pokemon that were easy to handle for a beginner would be the best choice! Two Pokeballs in her hand she released them with a flick of the wrist. Fire types weren't generally easy to work with persay but this one was a little easier to handle.
Cyndaquil looked around the room nervously. Flames flickering from his back lightly as he tried to pinpoint the reason he was out. It was a trainer of course but he wasn't really confident in himself at the moment. < H-hello. > Nose twitched nervously as he tried to clean off his face with his hands. It was hard enough being one of the most generically nervous Pokemon. He was upset that he followed a trope like that. He wanted to get up and be somebody but he couldn't on his own. He was weak but... One day he would be big and strong. One day.
Chikorita couldn't be any more the opposite though. Chest puffed out confidently he seemed to know what he was doing even if... They weren't doing anything? He knew that when push came to shove he was the biggest and best grass type option that could have been chosen. At least in his mind that's how he felt. Overconfident was what Xui would say though. "These two to start with and once we get the ball rolling I can get you a third too!" Some trainers got discouraged when they only saw two options but it was a process to make sure they made the right choice after all. [googlefont=Open+Sans]

The moment he saw the familiar Pokemon, there was no stopping the small smile that tugged at the corners of his mouth. The Cyndaquil gave a squeak of sorts, he looked a bit nervous, but more so irritated with his nerves than anything else. It was in that Pokemonโs nature to be that way, and being so young it probably aspired to be more than thatโฆ quick guess, he wouldnโt bet his living on it - currently about fifteen pokedollars.โจโจ
Next came the Chikorita which reminded him of a past date. Chest puffed out, ready for action. That definitely had the smirk turning into a fond smile. โWell, well. Look at these two.โ He bent down and smiled at them both. โHiya.โ He admitted, waving his hand at them and tilting his head. They were adorable, sure, even he could admit thatโฆ but at the same time, he wouldnโt mind having either of them.
The assistantโs words caught his attention and it wasn't then something dawned on him. โShit, I didnโt even introduce myself.โ A small and apologetic laugh later and he glanced down at the Pokemon presented to him. โWell, Iโm Kaneda, for all present who are curiousโฆโ He poked the Chikoritaโs chest and smiled at the Cyndaquil. โThis guy takes himself real seriously, doesnโt he?โ

Xui watched nervously as the interaction began to start. She was a little bit nervous but she managed to work her way into picking up a third Pokeball as well, waiting to see how this played out. Biting her lip nervously as he reached out a hand to touch the Chikorita. It was always a mistake to touch them without asking first. Always. Even if he wasn't fluent in Pokespeech that's what she was here for. The grass type wasn't going to take it either, the leaf on top of his head flipping around and smacking at the man's hand to make it go away. < Have you no decency? Would you touch woman's breast without proper clearance? Then I should think you not touch mine! > His chest was still puffed out but he took a step back from the man. He didn't trust not to be touched like that again.
Cyndaquil eyed the leaf nervously whenever Chikorita slapped the leaf around. Sure he was strong against grass types but it made him nervous. It was fun to play around some but battling was a bit above him. He couldn't really think of a time that he'd taken it seriously. < Chikorita is proud but... He's very strong... > Especially for a grass type. It was good that he was strong though. He would be a good choice for anyone. "Chikorita would appreciate you not touching him without asking. And Cyndaquil says that Chikorita is proud but very strong." She could translate to a degree since there already seemed to be a break down in communication.
"As a rule, the Pokemon here should be treated as if they were a person." Something that couldn't be stressed enough that it was important to treat them with respect. Just because there was a language barrier didn't mean any different. "Pokemon should be treated with respect..." She thought that was a given but... Some people just didn't understand.

When his hand was slapped by the leaf he didn't flinch, he didn't move, he let it happen. He'd done something wrong and that small sting would be a reminder not to ever do it again. He couldn't hear the rant, not more than just babble from the Chikorita, but he paid attention to the body language and retracted his hand. "Sorry, sorry." He apologized, then glanced up at the assistant as she translated the two.
Dark eyes returned to the Pokemon there. "Hey, no, that makes sense." He leaned back, one knee coming up so he could rest his elbow on it, hand hanging in the air. His other knee was against the ground as he looked them over, head tilting to the side and hair falling down a bit. "Totally my bad." There was no way in hell he would touch any woman's chest without asking, because they took that pretty personally... but truth be told, most men - that he knew and made good friends with anyway - wouldn't mind and hell, they'd encourage him to do so. But he had to remind himself that these Pokemon weren't immediately his friends. These were introductions.
His eyes moved to the Cyndaquil and he gave a small huff. "He's not gonna get over that anytime soon, huh?" He didn't blame him, it was a capitol offense... apparently. "In my defense, I treat everybody like they're already my friend... not much for barriers." He looked up to the assistant and lifted a brow. "Best behavior from here on out, promise I'll try." Because he was only human, and he'd probably make another mistake.

The apology seemed well enough for all three of them. The willingness to learn from a mistake meant that this guy might actually make a pretty decent trainer if he worked hard enough. There were people who came in here that refused to learn and it never ended well for anyone. Especially not the Pokemon they ended up taking with them. Chikorita approved of the apology for sure, knowing very well that boundaries could get skewed sometimes. That was why it was important to draw lines quickly. < It's alright, just don't do it again unless we get to be friends! > He wouldn't mind being touched so much by a compatriot but for now they were mere acquaintances if that. Xui finally felt it time to release the third Pokemon. She could trust the man enough for that at least. While the other two had been starters from the same region she couldn't help but think that a little bit of variety was necessary.
Out of the Pokeball came a Squirtle this time. Kanto native instead of Johto it would make for a nice mix. But not too far from home with the others. Still familiar. At least that's how Xui saw it. Markings all over the Squirtle's shell swirled and made for an interesting design. While they looked strange to some Xui knew that they were important to him. Symbols of his family and where he came from. As he got older he would add to them with whatever accomplishments he managed to achieve. He was more stoic than the other two, a facade so that he would look more mature. Something he hoped that would give him a bit of an edge. < Hello Squirtle. > It was the first time that the Cyndaquil had said something confidently. He felt braver when his friend was around though a water type would seem to scarier normally to a fire type like himself.
"They forgive you for touching without permission. Squirtle here is your final choice. Please choose wisely." Hopefully, he would take the time, even with the language barrier, to get a feel for the Pokemon. It would be hard but Xui couldn't help but believe in him. She wanted to have hope that this would go well.

"Choose wisely, huh?" Kaneda repeated while looking them over. He'd offended the Chikorita but it seemed as if the little spitfire was willing to overlook that and try out a journey. The Cyndaquil, adorable as he was, seemed like he wanted to try and become a good partner but would need a lot of encouragement. Though this Squirtle.... he'd just popped out with strange markins on his back and now Kaneda was curious. He glanced them over, then gave a soft smile. He didn't recognize the markings but he knew tribal sort of markings when he saw them, he'd traveled enough to recognize them. They were a mark of family pride. They were marks that showed history down his noble line. Huh.
His eyes drifted slowly between the three of them as he thought it over. "Well shit guys, I'm not totally sure which one of you to take along. Which one of you would be the best fit..." He gave a small laugh before looking to the assitant, and then down at the Pokemon present. "Which of you wouldn't mind a journey, hm? Can't promise we'll sleep in the best of places at all times, but I'm more than willing to keep you safe and constantly fed. Happiest I can keep you, in my current situation." Honesty was the best policy. Also Kaneda didn't see a reason to lie to the little ones.

They all knew they wanted to go on a journey eventually. But only one of them could be chosen by this trainer in particular meaning they all needed to put their best foot forward. Chikorita was still the brashest of the group. Eyes gleaming with pride as he pressed his chest forward once more. Though hopefully this time the human would keep his hands to himself. < I want to go on a journey more than anything! I want to be out there protecting women and children! And men too of course! Really, anyone who needs protecting! Because sometimes they don't fall under either and that's okay! Heroism isn't picky! > He knew that he could be great if someone gave him a chance to actually prove it. The stereotype that grass types were all delicate flowers had never sat well with him. Especially since trainers expected it from him as well. But he was bold and ready to take on the entire region if he needed to. Chikorita wasn't going to let anyone get in his way either!
Squirtle stepped a little closer a little slower than the rest of them. He was assessing the man for himself of course. The markings on his shell a reminder that eventually, he would need to fill in more. As he grew bigger space would grow meaning he would have more stories to tell his family once he eventually went home. < An adventure is what my tribe lives for! It's why we partner with the lab! Of course, I'm ready for it! > He looked determined. But then again why wouldn't he? If you weren't ready to get out there and find a trainer there was little point in being presented at the lab. Even Cyndaquil tried his hardest even though he was more nervous than some of the others. Then finally it fell on the fire type to speak, nervously he brushed his hands over his face before giving a small nod. < I'm ready to go! E-even if its scary and I don't know what I'll see, I'm ready to become a real trainer's partner! >
Xui was proud of them all. She knew the lab Pokemon worked hard to get where they were and there was no shame in being nervous. "They're all ready for an adventure." Since he couldn't understand them it was important to reassure him at least that it was what they wanted.

Each choice was considered. The Chikorita looked strong, but he looked like a hero type... Kaneda was sort of a hero type himself so he guessed they would go hand in hand. But the Chikorita seemed far more regal than Kaneda was. At times, being a good guy meant being the bad guy and he wasn't sure if the Chikorita puffing out his chest was the best option. He'd be strong and willing to battle. Still very tempting.
His eyes fell on the Squirtle was looking for something to do while growing to show his family tribe what he was made of, he could tell because of the stories etched into the Squirtle's shell. As tempting as it was to think of how useful a strong water type like him would be, Kaneda wasn't sure that he would be willing to take Squirtle back to his family in order for him to actually tell those stories. It wouldn't be fair to the Squirtle if Kaneda took him.
That left him with only one choice, and he smiled down at the little Cyndaquil who just seemed like he wanted to prove himself and get stronger. "Chikorita's a hero type, not sure that I'll do him justice." There was a pun there Kaneda was fully aware of that had him grinning like an idiot. His eyes then turned to the Squirtle. "I don't want to take your family from you and I'm not sure I'd be willing to travel back to your family so you could tell your tales and show off your markings, friend." He admitted before looking down at Cyndaquil.
Slowly he put his hand forward. He wouldn't fully touch the Cyndaquil, but he was offering his hand forward as a means to ask if Cyndaquil would trust him. "Looks like it's you and me... I wouldn't mind helping you find your backbone, little guy."

male - o5 - blaze tackle - leer Cyndaquil is a nervous guy not unlike a lot of his species. He generally finds himself uncomfortable in most social situations and will nervously groom at his face whenever confronted with them. More than once he's worn down bare patches on his fur because of it. He has a lot of hopes and dreams wrapped up in his head but since he tends to panic at the first sight of trouble he believes that he won't ever accomplish them. He wants to be big and strong like his friends at the lab are but chokes in battle more often than not. It'll take a gentle hand to guide him through this and pushing him too hard will likely result in negative consequences.
