[attr="class","rostercatsub2"]PERSONALITY
[attr="class","rostercat2"]TW for violence, death, abuse, sexual violence
Orphaned in Alto Mare at a young age and abandoned by anyone who might have been able to help him, the man who would eventually be known as ‘King’, birthname Nicola Vanzetti, resorted to crime as a means to survive. He was bigger and stronger than most, and his heart twice as hard, making him willing and able to lie, cheat, and steal his way through life to put food on his plate. He quickly garnered an intimidating reputation in the streets of the fair city, which earned the attention of the Montagues, a gang that specializes in racketeering and robbery. They recruited Nicola to their fold, and put him to work beating down anyone they had under their thumb who wouldn’t pay their dues. Nicola’s work was violent and often dangerous, but as far as he was concerned that was the only he could live. In his eyes, he was born to fight, and more likely than not would die fighting.
At least, that’s what Nico believed until he met the man who did his best to save him. Amato “Heartbreaker” Abrami, a former boxing champion, met the young Nico when the teen came to rob him, demanding a fee for protection, else he would put the old man through a world of pain. Imagine the young Montague’s surprise when Amato kicked his ass, handily, giving him his first true defeat. Normally, Amato would have thrown the thug out or called the police, but he found himself impressed by Nico’s still impressive fighting ability. He patched Nico up and fed him the biggest meal he had in years and he made him an offer-- he could have more food, a roof over his head, and a life where he could put his power to something useful. All he had to do was agree to let Amato be his boxing coach. At first, Nico was dubious and rejected Amato, and fled back to the street and to the Montagues. However, the small act of kindness the man offered him, the first he had experienced in his life, stuck in Nico’s mind and refused to go away. Eventually, he returned to the Heartbreaker Gym and reluctantly agreed to Amato’s terms, and began training under him.
After some initial hesitance and a rocky start, Nico couldn’t help but find himself falling in love with boxing and connecting deeply with the earnest heart and acerbic wit of his coach. The gym and everyone that trained there became Nico’s family, many of them former thugs themselves that encouraged Nico to be better. Their support and Amato’s teachings made Nico the best boxer the gym had ever seen, and as soon as he took his considerable skill to actual competitions, one of the best boxers in all of Alto Mare. His natural speed, strength, and determination became unparalleled when combined with his Amato’s mentorship, making him the city’s heavyweight champion backed by an undefeated track record and earning him the nickname ‘King of the Ring’-- or more simply, ‘King’.
Nico fought not for the money or the fame, but to as a way of saying thanks for the many years Amato had spent keeping his star pupil on the straight and narrow. That’s why, when members of the Capulet gang, a rival gang to the Montagues, gave him an offer to throw the biggest match of his career for a considerable cut of the betting pool, Nico gave them one simple answer-- ‘not on my life’. Unfortunately, it wouldn’t be his life that the Capulets decided to put at stake. Capulets came to the Heartbreaker Gym and shot Amato, as a reminder to King about what happened to those who denied the gang. Nico arrived only moments after the Capulets had run off, only to find a mortally wounded Amato on the gym floor. Nico rushed his mentor’s aid, called for help, tried to keep the old man stable, but it was all for naught. Amato died the the very same night of Nico’s final match.
Without Amato, the family that had formed at Heartbreaker Gym disbanded, and Nico lost his will to fight in the ring. Instead, something new started to guide his heart, and his fists-- revenge. He used his contacts with the Montagues as a means of gathering information on the men that slayed Amato. Nico tirelessly chased every trail of information he could find, and eventually learned that one of the men who was there the night Amato died would be at the Capulet party. Nico, without hesitation, entered that lion’s den, mercilessly crushing anyone who got in the way of his prey. When he finally came across the Capulet that killed his mentor, the man tried to bargain for his life by saying that he wasn’t alone that night, and that a pretty boy named Marcello was the one truly responsible, and he would tell him where he was if he just let him live. Nico, doubtful that the man was speaking the truth, ultimately decided to kill him. The act haunted Nico, for that was the first life he had ever taken, yet he justified it to himself by saying it was the least the Capulet deserved.
Nico was apprehended later that night, charged with murder, and thrown behind bars, but he couldn’t begin to make himself care. As far as he was concerned, he had gotten his revenge, and if the price of that was living the rest of his days in prison, then so be it. He was, for a time, at peace... until Marcello Vida, a man with a Capulet tattoo emblazoned proudly upon his back, was thrown in the same correctional facility Nico was locked up in. Immediately, Nico started to reconsider the last words of the Capulet he killed. He tried to question Marcello, to see if he would try and defend himself... and got a loogie in his face for his troubles.
Marcello’s disrespect infuriated Nico, and was now convinced Marcello was there the night Amato died, perhaps even the one responsible for killing him. He cornered Cello in the showers and tried to force him to speak, but the Capulet only continued to be unresponsive. In a blind fury, Nico beat Cello to a pulp and had his way with him, an act that Nico immediately felt incredibly guilty for after it was over, even more than the murder he committed. Whether or not Cello was responsible for Amato’s death, it didn’t justify the extremes Nico took to punish him, which only threw his already unbalanced mental state further in flux. However, strangely enough, Cello became... attached to Nico after their meeting in the shower, and started to stick submissively by his side. In turn, Nico tried to justify his guilt by protecting Cello from the other inmates, which he felt could earn him redemption for his cruel act. A bizarre and deeply toxic love began between them, with Nico coming to see Cello as the only thing in the world he had left to call his own.
Which was why, when Marcello was put up for parole, Nico became deeply erratic and abusive to Cello, worried of what would become of him when he lost the only thing he had left to protect. Cello, more than justifiably terrified for his own life, stabbed Nico in the stomach during his most violent outburst. Nico was sent to the medical ward, and eventually, Cello was set free. Nico never saw him again after that.
The solitude changed Nico significantly. He managed to find stability again, coming to believe that Cello was not responsible for the death of his mentor, and even if he was, didn’t deserve the cruelties Nico had put upon him. He became a model inmate, and the tragic circumstances that led him to kill that Capulet that killed the man he saw as a father were noted by the parole board. In a few years, he, too, was given his freedom back. Nico honestly wasn’t sure what to do with it. As far as he was concerned, he deserved prison, even death, for the crimes he committed, and he wasn't capable of doing anything with his life that ultimately didn't revolve around violence. One thing was for certain-- he couldn’t live in Alto Mare any longer. There were far too many bad memories, and he wanted to get as far away as possible from Marcello as he could.
He heard of a region called Inset that seemed like a place where he could begin again. Using his remaining connections with the Montagues, Nico stowed himself on a boat ride to that far off land. There, he hoped to find a new future for himself, or at least a chance to find redemption for the sins of his past.
