Everybody’s mad..." - Change, Rap Monster and Wale the poketopia state, as a whole, has a somewhat higher educational standard than regions such as unova, kalos, or alola. statistically, this is true; more globally successful students arise out of poketopia's educational system than in others, due to the culture's strict encouragement for academic success. this is congruent with the various technological and architectural wonders in poketopia, which is what allows the state to seem almost like a living, breathing theme park. this, combined with the social standard of all trainers being educated and strategic, creates pressure and stress for the youth. ivy nsibambi happens to be a victim of this. her parents moved there from another region when she was seven to pursue a more comfortable life. as such, ivy was placed in the annals of poketopian education as a transferring student, and had to suddenly catch up to her classmates. she didn't suffer, persay; despite the more difficult education, she managed to perform above the average. her parents did push her to have high expectations for herself, but this was backed by their own love and positive reinforcement. her classmates weren't the same. ivy saw how quickly top students degraded from happy, proud people to tired and exhausted in a matter of months. even at a young age, the girl could tell that the system was hurting her friends. she'd heard the echoes of frustrated lectures from a mother to her son, and seen a father nearly slap his children before realizing there was company. by the time she was ten, ivy nsibambi became quickly disenchanted with the entire system, as well as socializing with people as a whole. though she held her own high standards, she simply couldn't tolerate how robotic her friends had become over their elementary school years. she retreated to gardening, enjoying nature, and other cultures. things that could be enjoyed in the comfort of one's own home or in the wilderness, without other people. adults simply filled her with disappointment, and her classmates filled her with a sense of helplessness; people, as a whole, became somewhat offensive to ivy. it may seem a bit much for a sixth grader, but children were always more observant than adults gave them credit for. ivy soon fit into the niche of a nature child; which her parents supported, given how innocuous the image of ivy planting flowers and enjoying sunsets was. however, the youth felt that she did need a career at some point. her parents weren't always going to support her, that much was true. they'd already spoken to her about 'what if they get into a car crash' or 'what if they divorce', so ivy had a general sense of what to do if anything went wrong. she had high marks at her trainer school and her education, but felt that with the life she was planning to live, filled with a love of nature and wonder and exploring, she'd be better off pursuing a job as a pokemon trainer, rather than studying to be a doctor, or suffering as a nature enthusiast with low to lower-middle class pay. the average age for a pokemon trainer, normally, was high school; but in the region her family came from, as well as other regions such as kanto, it was common to get a trainer card after middle school, or even after elementary school, at the age of ten. ivy settled for the former, officially gaining her trainer card on her twelfth birthday, once she graduated eighth grade. with that, ivy applied for her starter slot in several regions, given sinnoh had been full by the time she had graduated middle school. finally accepting the slot in the inset region, ivy packed her bags and traveled, eager to start her pokemon journey.
