A picture follows a few seconds after, struggling a bit to send through the weak cell signal. It's grainy, but unmistakeable: a selfie of Mike, bent down next to an Eevee. A lake stretches out through the background, and a box of beer is clearly visible just behind the Eevee -- who's putting on his best (adorable) imitation of a growl.
Mike wondered for a second if this was the best way to introduce Avery to his new Pokémon. Probably not. He shrugged - whatever, right? Avery was planning on hitting up the lab sometime soon, and the the lake was right next door. He was practically doing his friend a favor. And, came the bitter thought, since when had Avery been good at communication? Mike swallowed that thought down and chased it with a swig of beer.

"... No way." The ginger frowns down at the two rapidfire texts that reach his phone, and then at the grainy, but still-smug, picture of Mike's face leering up at him. How did he even get one of those? Lucky bastard. The Eevee in the picture seems to be attempting -- and mostly failing -- to look as fierce as possible, which is both endearing and hilarious. Still, though. Mike is one lucky son of a bitch.
Avery glances down at the Houndour padding dutifully by his side, close enough that his fluffy pelt brushes against the young man's leg at each step. Despite Mike's insane luck, Avery feels pretty damn good about his own starter fortunes, all things considered. He pauses in his stride, and, upon feeling his trainer stop moving, Cujo pauses as well, canting his head to one side so his ears flop over.
+'No way' what...?+ Cujo queries, blinking sightless eyes up towards the sound of Avery's voice.
"Oh, uh. My buddy Mike just finally texted me, s'all." He kneels down and reaches to gently ruffle the Houndour's fur, and, after a moment of tense pause, Cujo leans contentedly into the contact. "Gonna send him a picture real fast, so smile for the camera."
+Camera? What's a cam--+

A confused, but very-fluffy, Houndour and a smirking Avery find their way to Mike's phone shortly thereafter -- the picture quality is, perhaps unsurprisingly, much better than whatever Mike's phone has. Two texts ping shortly thereafter.

Mike stretched out on his beach chair, phone rested face-down on his chest. He had it flipped up into his hands the second he felt it buzz, and --

He stared down at the phone, blank, thumbs hovering over the keyboard. Another message came in, and another, and he couldn't bring himself to respond. It was Kickstart that finally snapped him out of it with a wet nose to his ankle, and Mike cleared his throat. It's not like he was getting emotional or anything, it was just the sand and pollen and spores and such -- lakes were terribly dangerous places. He coughed.

He's knows it's a silly thing to do, but his hands have his own phone drawn up and unlocked only a couple of seconds after the first chime, as though reading whatever reply he'd sent was a matter of life or death. Good thing Mike can't see you right now, jackass. You look desperate as shit. He crinkles his nose, pushing the wry thought away as pale green eyes scan the screen.

He bites at his lip, frowning slightly. In hindsight, that might have sounded a little passive aggressive. Maybe he should've added a smiley face or something. His brows furrow at the next text, and he shoots an almost-defensive look down at his starter, who is cautiously snuffling around near his feet, fuzzy tail wagging.
