The battlefield appears larger than it actually is -- a grand, tall-treed forest stretching too far for the eye to see. It appears to be the middle of autumn, and the trees are mostly barren, their vivid yellow and orange leaves blanketing the ground instead. Each footstep one takes is announced by a loud, sharp crackling as brittle leaves break and crunch beneath them, but, aside from the sound, the terrain is relatively flat. In the not-too-far distance, you can see a freckly ginger man and a very fluffy Houndour playing in the leaves, causing quite the noise and ruckus themselves. It seems these two will be your opponents. Hold items only. This can be an egg thread if you'd like! cujo -- 3c3c3c houndour -- male -- 05 -- fur coat leer, ember, howl, sucker punch

and suddenly i'm singing out of line < So, this is, like, a really cool hologram place that has super epic laser battles? >"Um.... Maybe?" Calla tapped the touchscreen control panel, trying to pick out a room. There were quite a few rooms open to claim, but he was more interested in joining a free battle. Most of the battles already created were blanked out to show they were taken, though, so he was starting to get discouraged. After cleaning up Shadowpaw some, he figured that he should do the 'Trainer' thing and try to battle with the kitten pokemon. He was young and seemed eager to grow stronger, so it wouldn't be like he was trying to force, say, Resin into a battle. Then again, forcing a pokemon with a broken wing and some obvious anxiety issues to battle would just make him a bad person. Calla sighed, about to give up and just make his own room to wait, but an open room popped up. He tapped on it after a cursory glance, claiming the battle as his own and pleased he didn't have to resort to playing the waiting game. Just a few minutes later he was down the hallway and in front of the assigned door, Shadowpaw at his heels and looking on curiously. Inside was a lovely fall tree scene, the air even crisp enough to make Calla shiver and pull his jacket tighter over his frame. Shadowpaw's eyes widened and he gasped quietly before hopping inside, giggling as the bright red leaves crunched under his paws. "Hello?" Calla called out, eyes scanning the scenery. The door closed behind him and faded into the hologram, making it appear like he was just standing in nature. It was... kind of creepy. He didn't receive an answer, but that was probably because his opponent was a ways across the field and looked to be busy playing in the leaves. Calla was about to call out again, louder to let them know he was there, but Shadowpaw dashed off giggling loudly. < I wanna play! I wanna play! > Shadowpaw closed the distance quickly, his Trainer following much slower. He tried to lightly headbutt the fluffy dog pokemon; not to attack, but just to rub against him and play. The scenery was so beautiful that Avery was a little bummed that Cujo couldn’t see it. The young pup didn’t seem to mind too much – though Avery had refrained from commenting on how lovely and pretty everything looked, just in case – and seemed quite enthralled with the fallen leaves and the way they crackled and crunched beneath his large paws. In the time they’d spent waiting, much of his time had been spent pouncing through leaf piles and running around the relatively-flat area. An outsider looking in wouldn’t have even suspected the Houndour’s disability had they seen him darting and lunging around like a normal pup. ”Man, look at how quick you are! If you keep that up, whoever winds up facing you isn’t even gonna know where to start!” the ginger called out, flashing a broad, crooked grin towards his starter. Cujo skidded to a rather unceremonious halt in a flurry of red, orange, and yellow, flop-earred head whipping around to stare curiously at the general area where Avery stood. He wasn’t sure if Avery was just trying to make him feel better or not, but he offered a hopeful wag of his tail nevertheless. +You really think so?+ he asked, canting his head far enough to one side that an ear flopped over his face. ”Oh, shit, definitely. They’re already gonna be surprised by how cute you are, they won’t expect you to be a speed demon too. I bet you Kickstart will be surprised when you kick his little fluffy butt, too,” Avery affirmed, smirking as he imagined the look on Mike’s face if he and Cujo managed to beat him. Cujo looked a little less confident at that – Kickstart was quite the spirited little guy, and Cujo wasn’t sure he’d want to beat him in a fight even given the chance. That didn’t seem like the friendly sort of thing to do, after all. A sharp whistle drew his attention again, and Avery grinned wider as he saw the Houndour’s attention snap back to him. He was beginning to get some ideas about potential strategies to battle using the Houndour – though he didn’t exactly have the time to practice or run through them before this battle. ”Yo. So, I was thinking – after this, we come up with some sorta system with… uh. Whistles, or sounds, or something like that. For battling, y’know?”The Houndour looked a little wary, but Avery could see his ears pricking just slightly, as though he were curious despite his misgivings. ”It’d take a bit of work, but, like. We could come up with whistle combos for attacking and dodging based on the enemy’s location. Easier’n sayin’ ‘dodge to the left!’, and less obvious, too. … And once we get the hang of it, it wouldn’t be hard to do.”+That, uh, sounds like a lot of work. B-but if you think it could work…+ He wasn’t going to become too hopeful, but it sounded promising, at least. Unfortunately for the both of them, Calla’s arrival tossed a wrench into discussing any more ideas for the time being. Cujo noticed before Avery, surprisingly enough – at the first sound of feet upon fallen leaves, his head swiveled, ears pricking up as he ‘glanced’ in the direction of the newcomers. His tail offered a tentative wag, and he yipped out a cheerful little, +O-oh, hello!+Avery turned, offering a casual grin and a wave to the approaching man and the little Dark-typed cat that moved beside him. Purrloin were pretty cool – though Avery was definitely more a dog person than a cat person – and he found himself growing steadily more excited about the prospect of battling. As far as things went, there was a lot worse that Cujo could have had as a first battle opponent than a little cat. “Yo!” he offered as the Purrloin drew closer – the little cat seemed to be on a mission, however, and bounded nimbly over to Cujo, apparently eager to play. The Houndour had a momentary flash of panic at the sound of something rapidly approaching in the leaves, and at the subsequent feeling of an unfamiliar, fluffy head butting against his flank. His fluffy fur bristled and he offered a sharp little yelp of surprise at the intrusion to his personal space, one sturdy front leg coming up automatically to get between himself and the stranger as he stumbled back. The movement was a little rougher than he’d anticipated, unfortunately – a sort of Sucker Punch, intentional or not. If he wound up actually clocking the poor cat by some misfortune, he’d probably feel rather guilty about it. +H-hey, watch it!+ he growled as he backed up a little more, shooting a fierce little glare in the direction he presumed the other Pokemon to be. Avery winced a little, feeling a touch guilty for both not warning Cujo and for the Purrloin possibly getting blindsided by a big fluffy paw. This wasn’t how he’d intended his first battle to begin, but Cujo seemed to have made the first move, whether he’d meant to or not. cujo -- 3c3c3c houndour -- male -- 05 -- fur coat leer, ember, howl, sucker punchcujo used sucker punch (kind of) and leer! cujo gained 849 exp! cujo grew to level 8 (174/275)! he learns smog. 3/5 levels until exhaustion strikes ((849 words, oop. and suddenly i'm singing out of line Shadowpaw's giggles were cut short when pain hit him, half knocking him to the side. He hadn't expected to be hit for wanting to play, so he laid his ears back and puffed up his fur, growling at the sudden strike as he tried to comprehend what had just happened. The kitten pokemon sniffled slightly, tears welling up in his big blue eyes. < H-hey! That's mean! I just wanted to be nice! > A few more little tears dribbled down his cheeks before he could stop them; he felt rather put out and rebuffed by having his offering of friendship slapped back in his face like that. Calla frowned, picking up his easy walking pace into more of a jog so he could approach a little faster. He winced at the hit and again at what Shadowpaw was saying. He felt a little sympathetic since it was his own pokemon, but he had also seen what happened. "Shadow, this is a battle, you get hit in battles." Calla tried his best to sound stern and like he was in charge, but also understanding. He was speaking to what was essentially a child, after all. He wasn't able to gauge if it was actually working or not, though. Shadowpaw looked up at Calla like his trainer had betrayed him for not taking his side. Before the Purrloin had a chance to say anything on the matter, Calla quickly continued. "Plus, you just charged up expected to play and probably surprised them. You need to be more considerate next time." Purrloin huffed and glared at some of the leaves, swiping at them in frustration. He at least seemed thoroughly scolded, since this whole thing was, in part, the kitten pokemon's fault. He pouted and looked back up at Cujo and Avery, the tears from before already drying. < I'm sorry.... > He muttered out, then stood back up. < But I'm still gunna win! And then I want to play in the leaves! They're crunchy! > It was like his attitude had taken a complete 180. As was one of the blessings of youth. < You're really puffy! And your ears are cool! > Purrloin inched closer under Calla's watchful eye and swiped at a long hanging piece of fur, giggling as he did with the intention to play. Calla sighed and rolled his eyes at the pokemon's shenanigans. "Uh.... sorry about all that." Calla nodded to Avery, finally. "I'm Calla, and this is Shadowpaw. He's, uh...." He glanced over at the Purrloin, who had quickly lost interest in the Houndour and was busy kicking up leaves to slap at. "He's never battled before. So... take it a little easy on him?" Calla scratched the back of his neck sheepishly and tugged at the sleeves of his hoodie, self conscious suddenly. Was that something trainers asked for? He didn't know. This was his first battle too, at least with another Trainer. "Shadow, why don't you try out that cool Scratch move you were practicing with Ashpaw earlier?" He figured the battle was started, technically, since the Houndour got the first hit in. They had been stalling long enough and it was time to get some training in, he guessed. Backing away and shifting, Calla took the kind of position that he had seen Trainers on TV use. He felt like it made him look dumb, to be honest, but he was still pretty unsure what he was supposed to be doing here. The single egg left in his bag clinked against the spare pokeballs he had in there. He winced and hoped he hadn't done something stupid, like damage it. Shadowpaw looked back at Calla, then over to the Houndour. Use Scratch? Well... he was supposed to be fighting or something, not playing. Taking position, Shadow lowered the front of his body so his hind end was in the air. He shook it a few times, tail lashing and eyes locked on Houndour before he darted forwards. < Yaaaaaaah! > Purrloin jumped at the last second, trying to claw the other and larger pokemon with what leverage he could. Honestly, though, he wasn't very skilled at things like this, and kitten claws weren't cut out for hard battles. Even if the attack struck, it probably wouldn't actually do very much. Cujo flinched a bit as he felt his paw connect with soft fur and flesh, a little whine sounding in his throat – a pang of guilt immediately went through him, and he considered telling Avery that maybe he wasn’t really cut out for his ‘battling’ business after all. Somehow, he’d managed to attack without even meaning to, and he was pretty sure that was a terribly rude thing to do. The little fire dog backed away a few more paces, fur fluffed up and eyes glancing warily around – never directly at the cat, but in that general direction. +I—I-I’m sorry, I just…+ He cut off, feeling a bit wretched. Was the cat crying? The Houndour’s long tail drooped, and he cast an uncertain glance back towards Avery, ears wilting. The ginger squinted for a moment before offering what he hoped was a reassuring, ”It’s alright, Jo – you just got surprised, that’s all.” The hound didn’t look convinced, and glanced uneasily towards the source of a new noise – an approaching trainer, perhaps. Avery took a moment to glance his opponent over, brows arching curiously as he listened to the attempt at ‘scolding’ he gave to the young cat. It was actually pretty decent – Avery wasn’t sure he’d have been able to explain it in such a way – and he flashed a little grin at Calla, pleased that he seemed like a relatively inoffensive dude. He could have just as easily come over to bitch Avery out about his Pokemon smacking a kitten in the face, so Avery considered him pretty decent for not going that route. The kitten seemed to become cheerful surprisingly quickly – Cujo envied his ability to forgive so easily – and the hound tensed up as he felt a paw swipe playfully at his fur, though he managed to stop himself from striking out this time again. Sightless eyes turned to leer warily at the kitten, but he attempted a friendly smile, even as his voice quivered slightly. +Er. T-thank you, I think.+ The canine looked as flustered as he always did when someone complimented him, as though he was never quite used to hearing such positivities. Avery glanced back to Calla, inclining his head politely and flashing another grin. “Yo. Avery, and, uh, Cujo – don’t worry, he’s a lot less menacing than his namesake.” His gaze traveled to the playful little cat, and he hummed at the request, feeling a bit sympathetic. Technically, it was Cujo’s first real fight as well. Avery wasn’t sure he’d have had the balls to request something like someone taking it easy on him, but he could certainly understand the other man’s sentiment. ”It’s Jo’s first time, too, technically – we’re just trying to figure out the basics and get some moves down, honestly.” He cleared his throat, feeling a little awkward as he added, ”Jo’s blind, so we’re mostly interested in coming up with strategies right now, I think.”The other trainer switched his attention back to the Purrloin, and Avery directed his to Cujo in kind, listening to the words the trainer offered. He made a mental note that a series of whistles would have another advantage, too – unless the opponent was very observant, it’d be hard for them to really predict what he was going to do. ”Right! Uh, brace yourself, Jo,” he muttered hastily, backtracking himself to match Calla’s swift retreat. The hound tensed up uncertainly, planting his paws into the leaves and offering a quiet little growl. It seemed wrong to order him to dodge after he’d kind of blindsided Shadowpaw – and, besides, Avery was banking on that fluffy coat adding a bit of protection against the cat’s claws. Cujo was expecting serious, substantial pain, squeezing his eyes shut as he waited tensely for the blow. When it connected, it certainly stung, but not nearly as much as he’d feared. The kitten’s claws still weren’t as developed as they could have been, and most of the blow seemed to graze through his pelt without really causing damage. The canine wasn’t aware of the fortunate, natural defense his mother’s long fur had given him – albeit at the expense of natural fire immunity – but, in that moment, he was grateful for the ridiculous amount of fluff he had. Avery looked relieved as Cujo didn’t seem too injured. He’d been momentarily distracted by the strange, cheesy pose his opponent had taken up – really, what kind of message was that supposed to send? – and had torn his gaze from the battle. He refocused almost immediately. ”Alright! You know where he is, so go for an Ember!” It brought back memories of nearly setting Mike’s room on fire – Ember was typically a ranged move, but the farther away an enemy was, the harder it’d likely be for Cujo to probably aim. At such a close range, perhaps he’d have less trouble. The hound had to concentrate for a long moment to build up the flame and fire within his maw – heat rolled in his throat and condensed, and he savored the warm feeling for a moment before unleashing a single, rather unimpressive fireball at the spot the Purrloin had struck from. Like the kitten’s Scratch, it wasn’t a very impressive move – though fire was flashier, at least – and it suffered from the same lack of practice and experience. At least it was fire, and not just smoke, right? Avery grinned, pleased whether the attack landed or not; the filmmaker took a moment to glance over the eggs in his own bag – one large and cream-colored, the other smaller, but much more vibrant. He wasn’t entirely sure what was in them, but he’d been desperate to at least catch up to Mike’s apparent Pokemon-catching craze. cujo -- 3c3c3c houndour -- male -- 08 (174/275) -- fur coatleer, ember, howl, sucker punch, smog cujo is hit by scratch! fur coat diminishes the damage of physical moves! cujo uses ember! cujo gained 401 exp and grew to level 10! exhaustion is now in effect! 551 exp is leftover (276 after halving!), which leaves cujo at level 10 (276/325)! and suddenly i'm singing out of line Calla winced and shook his head lightly at the odd display that Shadowpaw was putting on. Where had he learned that little trick from? Ashpaw? Certainly not Frenzy, Resin or Icarus. Maybe it was a leftover from his previous owners before he was left on the streets. Either was as long as... it made him happy, he guessed. And didn't get him hurt, of course. "Oh, shit." Calla muttered when it clicked what 'ember' was. A fire move or something? He thought maybe Ashpaw knew it, but then again he hadn't ever studied moves or anything like that very hard before and he was still pretty new when it came to recognizing what they did. At least this one was more common sense that something like 'U-Turn'. What the fuck was a U-Turn and how did you attack with it? He was super curious but kind of too afraid to use Frenzy and find out. Since Calla didn't react in enough time to actually tell him pokemon to dodge, Shadowpaw was hit with the ember. Thankfully, where he was still in the process of trying to land, it didn't hit him full on- but the puff of fire scorched the end of his tail, earning Cujo a loud yowl. Shadowpaw tucked his tail to the side and darted away, his fur puffed up and hissing softly. < Calla! > Shadowpaw whined, flicking his tail back and forth a few times to quell the stinging. It really hadn't hurt as much as the purrloin was letting on, but Shadowpaw was a Grade A whiner and a Top Tier crybaby. He sniffled again and glanced back at his Trainer, crocodile tears in the corners of his eyes. Calla tried to keep the small, fond smile off his face. He hadn't had Shadowpaw long but he was already very attached to him. "You're doing good, Shadow. I'm sure Ash would be proud." It was a gentle encouragement, but after a moment's thought the fake tears were gone and a sort of determination was there. Shadowpaw wanted to impress Ashpaw, and to do that he had to get stronger. And to get stronger he had to battle, so this was... this was what he would have to get used to! "Let's try... Assist, Shadow." Assist was a newer move, more random. Calla really had no idea what it would do, but it seemed promising. It ended up surprising the young man, though. When he heard the command, Shadowpaw flicked his ears back before he seemed to be concentrating very hard. A small purple aura surrounded him, filling his eyes with glowing purple as well; it was tangible and very viable for everyone who happened to be able to see. There was a twinge in his side, and Calla lifted the hem of his hoodie to look at his belt. The pokeball that Resin was currently contained in was glowing that same purple. It felt kind of like a tickling sensation. < Ha! > Shadowpaw darted forward again. The purple aura materialized and lengthened, taking the vaguely ghostly shape of a pair of feathered wings sprouting from the kitten pokemon's back. These wings stiffed and Shadow tried to draw close to Cujo; tried to hit him with these false wings. He couldn't tell if he hit or not even after getting close. The wings would feel like the real thing, sure, but they also weren't actually a part of him s he couldn't feel them. When he passed by, he tried to skid to a halt and turn sharply. With the attack over, the glowing stopped. The purple aura seemed 'pop' from around him before it faded into nothing. Shadowpaw panted in place. He had only just started but he was already starting to feel worn out. He could already tell that he was getting stronger, though. Just a little but, but it was enough for him. "Good job, Shadow!" Calla absently touched Resin's pokeball. He wasn't trying to call the Staravia out, but just to... try and comprehend what had happened. That was really weird, but also kind of cool. Perhaps throwing fire into the mix sort of broke the whole ‘take it easy’ promise, in hindsight. Even a little fireball seemed like a bit much when your opponent wasn’t doing much aside from clawing tufts of fur from your pelt. Avery rubbed at the back of his neck sheepishly, unsure whether an apology was warranted or not. The Houndour fighting seemed to flinch back at the yowl as though he’d been physically struck, sightless eyes clouding with guilt. The filmmaker frowned, feeling even guiltier for involving the poor canine in the first place. The more he pushed Jo to fight, the more it seemed like Jo didn’t really have that in his heart. Perhaps the youth and general innocence of their opponent wasn’t helping. Avery made a mental note to attempt to pit him against someone more eager to fight next time – Mike’s Eevee, Kickstart, came almost immediately to mind. He wasn’t sure Jo would make a suitable rival for the eager little fox, but perhaps Kickstart could… well, kickstart Jo’s own drive for fighting. If not, Avery wouldn’t push the canine too hard. ”You’re doing well, Jo! Don’t worry, the—uh… Shadowpaw—“ he paused, wondering just what sort of strange name that was, ”—is alright! No real harm done, right?” He glanced Calla’s way, wanting to confirm, if only to assuage Jo’s worries. The Houndour couldn’t see what was going on, after all – for all he knew, Shadowpaw’s yowling could have been a result of him burning him alive. Avery certainly didn’t want that on his canine’s conscience. ‘Assist’ wasn’t a move Avery had heard of before, and he wasn’t entirely sure how to warn Jo about it. The canine tensed up as though he was expecting the worst, paws bracing themselves in the leaves with a harsh crunch. ”Easy, Jo. Let him come to you, alright?” Sharp green eyes narrowed as they observed the eerie glow around the Purrloin – it was creepy and badass and shit, he wished he’d remembered to bring his camera. It was probably laying in Mike’s living room while he tried to get new parts for it. He watched in mild wonder as ghostly wings seemed to materialize upon the Purrloin’s body – some side effect of that move, he assumed. As far as Avery knew, cats didn’t just spontaneously sprout real wings mid-fight (if they did, he’d definitely be more inclined to be a cat person, rather than a dog person). He was so enthralled with the strange, ethereal wings that he failed to warn Jo until the Purrloin was already lunging towards him, and his words fell on deaf ears as the wings connected. It was a strange sensation – they were solid but not, hitting the canine with enough power to knock him back with a startled yelp. But they also didn’t seem to impede the cat’s motions, and Jo turned to follow him with a growl of unease, side smarting from whatever had struck him. That hadn’t felt like the Purrloin’s body, but he’d definitely scented the cat and heard the patter of paws. The sound of panting drew his attention towards the cat’s location, though he shared the sentiment of tiredness. His pelt had blanketed some of the brunt of that hit as well, but his inexperience was wearing him out more than the cat’s continued strikes. Neither one of them was really cut out for longer, more intense battles yet, but Jo was going to keep at it if Avery wanted him to. Avery frowned, noticing the dog’s tiredness. That Ember had taken a lot out of him, and he pondered their options. ”Alright—uh, shit. You got anything else you can think of?”The Houndour didn’t reply, but Avery could see how hard he was concentrating, face scrunching up. In fact, the effort of focusing seemed to be causing him some level of discomfort. Avery almost thought he looked nauseous, though he couldn’t really fathom why. Until, that is, the Houndour coughed, belching up thick, noxious smoke that seemed to cloud and spread as it hit the ground, lingering in an unpleasant, black-purple haze. ”Sick, dude..” Avery instinctively covered his mouth, not wanting to breathe in whatever smoggy mess his Pokemon had produced. Still, it was a neat trick – one that left Jo huffing and coughing, sure, but Avery wasn’t sure if that was a constant thing that would happen, or something similar to the first time he’d tried a cigarette and come away hacking and coughing for air. If it was the latter, it could certainly be worked with, even if Jo looked a bit queasy at the moment. cujo -- 3c3c3c houndour -- male -- 10 (276/325) -- fur coatleer, ember, howl, sucker punch, smogcujo is hit by assist/wing attack! fur coat halves the damage of physical moves! jo uses smog!
