The adoption had taken most of Aiden's remaining money but that adorable, fidgety Darumaka was worth every penny. Heck, if Aiden hadn't been able to afford the poor dear, he would've waited tables - or mowed lawns - or sold plasma - or done anything (short of, like, prostitution) until he had the cash to take Darumaka home. No fire type was staying in an adoption center, not while Aiden Gallagher was around. No sir.
"Thank you for getting me outta there," the Darumaka spluttered while he hopped from one foot to the other. Aiden knelt down to be more at eye level. A few inches separated the two but Darumaka's intense body heat still wafted over him, easily overpowering the scorching summer heat. The boy grinned. "Happy to do it, m'dude." Rocoto blinked rapidly and licked his lips while he carried on adjusting his body weight this way and that, as though no position was comfortable enough to stay in for longer than a few seconds.
"Now. The center told me your old name--" before Aiden could even finish the thought, the Darumaka's eyes widened, as if in fear, and his small hands wrung together, so Aiden adjusted the question mid-sentence "--and I was wondering if you'd be okay with a change?" The Darumaka's eyes returned to their normal size and Aiden could practically see the relief wash over the zen charm. "See, I don't have many pokemon yet, but so far, they've all been named after food or spices, that sorta thing. Doesn't have to be continued, if someone's got a name they prefer. Just a thing I'm tryin' out."
Darumaka beamed. For one solitary second, Darumaka slowed down until both feet were solidly on the ground. "I'd love a new name," he said eagerly. "What kinda food were you thinking? 'S'long as it's not ice stone, I'm fine with anything!" It was a bit of a sore subject but Darumaka was so happy to have a new home and a new name - he didn't want an unfortunate name to ruin it.
Aiden's brow furrowed. "Well, uh, that's fine?" He gnawed at his lower lip and tried to figure out if maybe Darumaka hadn't heard him properly. "Because... ice stones aren't food?"
It was a good thing Darumaka had red fur; it hid the violent, embarrassed blush that rapidly took hold of his cheeks. His old teammates had convinced him to eat one. It was the reason he'd been left at Peaceberry in the first place. "But I was thinking some kinda pepper for you, since you're so friggin' hot, and they're spicy." It was a stale tactic, one he'd used once before on Carolina Reaper the Fletchling. She was spicy in her personality more so than her body heat, so using peppers again didn't feel as much like beating a dead ponyta. "Rocoto, maybe? After the rocoto pepper? They're pretty up there on the Scoville scale."
The Darumaka had no earthly idea what a Scoville scale was but it sounded good, if the boy's inflection was any indication. "Rocoto's good," he confirmed. "Where're we off to?"
Aiden gestured in the general direction of the other side of the small village. "Outta here." That was enough for Rocoto. Once he had a direction, Darumaka's already high body temperature skyrocketed. He did a one eighty and launched in that direction.
Right as he ran off, one of Aiden's pokeballs began to shake violently. Carolina Reaper came streaming out of her pokeball. It was like she knew Aiden had been thinking about her - a transgression which was serious enough to merit an appearance.
"Oh," Aiden said. "Nice to see you again, Carolina." He glanced around to see if there were any villagers. Carolina was, to put it mildly, an acquired taste.
It didn't take long for Carolina to prove that point. She took one look at the Darumaka running through Ara Village and let out a derisive scoff before rounding on the ginger. "You haven't given me one single fuckin' damned ass fight yet and ye're takin' in strays?"
Aiden paused for a moment to consider the question. Then, with a cheerful grin, he responded the only way he knew how: happily. "Yep!" It was a good thing his two eggs were tucked safely in his backpack; he could only imagine how Carolina would've taken to them. By her own admission, she wasn't exactly mother of the year material.
The Fletchling's face flashed through a slideshow of emotions so quickly that Aiden hardly had time to identify any of them. (He was sure all the usual ones were there, though. Anger, hatred, disgust, revulsion, irritation, all those.) "Then it's time y'live up to yer word! Find me a fuckin' fight, ya ginger-crotched cunt." Without actually waiting for Aiden to live up to his word (in fact, without even waiting for Aiden to respond) Carolina flapped her wings and rose higher in the air. From her new vantage point, she swung her head around the village, looking for any signs of a wild pokemon she could pummel.
In the distance, Rocoto belatedly realized he was alone and performed another one eighty, barreling back towards Aiden. He didn't mind sticking around Ara Village; he hadn't wanted to run to route two so much as he'd just wanted to run. Luckily for him, he'd missed the latest of Carolina Reaper's tirades. That luck was unlikely to last much longer.

NOTES → Thread title courtesy of Quest. Potential egg thread for Heatmor and special fall event mystery egg. Aiden's a fire specialist so I'd love a Fennekin or Vulpix but honestly anything is fine! Carolina just needs a fight real bad. ;w; For reference, she's level four and Rocoto is level eleven.
