When Sana's father had offered to buy her a pokemon as gift, she had grinned. It was easy, almost too easy to get what she wanted out of the man. If she had cared more, it would have made the dark haired girl a bit sad, to be able to manipulate her father so. But it was her fault that he was such an emotional being, for seeing what he wanted to see, for buying the lie as it were. But what Sana had not expected, no what had delighted her, was the fire within the magby. It made her itch beneath her skin to listen to the tiny fire type, and Sana couldn't help but laugh a little, wide eyed, when she thought of what it could become if it was just stronger.
The girl was muttering to herself as she walked through the streets of Dawning. Coming here was an experiment. Watch the normal people get their starters, catch their pokemon, go on their merry little way. It was informative, to see the standard that she was to break, crush oh so thoroughly beneath her heel. Sana was delighted. This was a good choice, a very good choice. So much better than going to university and getting slaps on the wrist for unapproved experiments.
The girl laughed into her fingers as she walked down the street, the sun setting ahead of her after a day full of spying on others. A few passerbys stared but Sana didn't care. She was used to eyes watching her, watching the way her back bent forward, hands interclasped together as her long hair nearly grazed the sidewalk. She was a picture of something strange, something other. And that was the way she liked it, clad herself in eccentric clothing that was ill-fitting, but took extreme care to keep her long dark hair neat and straight. The disjointed feeling she gave, the boring look in her wide eyes.
"Maybe I should let Mag out to play," the girl muttered to herself. "If only she'd behave." She laughed to herself for her clever little inside joke, before reaching down to the pokeball on her hip, releasing the creature inside with a bright beam of light.
The magby emerged, eyes narrowed at the increasingly deserted street, before turning quickly on her owner. "What is this about?" The fire type spat. "There's nothing here."
"Mag, if you're looking for a fight go find it. It would be ever so lovely to watch."
"Don't order me around!" The fire type said, purposefully stalking forward. Although her body was small and compact now, she moved in a way that said she was a fighter, prepared to go to extremes to take down an enemy. Fiercely indepedent, intolerant of weakness. Oh, Sana loved her starter pokemon, if Sana could really love anyone.
"I just want you to have a good time, Mag. No need to get so angry already. Why don't you save your energy for a new friend."
"New friend? Don't be ridiculous," the young fire type growled.
Sana hummed, her smile growing on her wide face, large eyes lit up with excitement. Oh this would be wonderful, wouldn't it? And if whatever poor thing ended up getting snacked on by Mag happened to be a dud, well she could always sell it for quick cash right? Or exchange it for something better. There was always an answer.

The setting sun was the backdrop for this drama. High strung emotions played out against the endless sky of fiery red and cool dark blue. The sound of voices, the shape of a silhouette, all of it met Sana and her magby as they made their way up the hill, the girl chuckling into her finger tips, the magby searching with narrowed eyes for something to take her frustrations out on.
"Whats this supposed to be?" Called a voice loudly, laced with disgust.
"Its a stick, its the first building block of our nest together," the second voice, more melodic replied back with all the casual charm of a disney prince finally realizing it was his chance to take the pretty girl. There was something hopeful in that voice as he chirped.
"Our nest?" The first voice scoffed, as if in entire disbelief. "You have to be kidding me."
"What? Didn't you want this?" The second voice rose in pitch, along with the ruffling of feathers.
It was clearer the picture now, as Sana's footsteps too her closer. The magby's face, upon overhearing the conversation, was scrunched up into a look of genuine disgust, while Sana's was that of complete concentration. Dark against the sky were too forms, both avian. A shorter, stockier one. Another with characteristic pointed tail feathers.
"I already have a mate," the first voice said, a pidove, Sana concluded after racking her brain for common pokemon with body type's fitting that in front of her.
"Since when?" The fletchling cried, voice full of fret and wounded pride.
"A few days ago. Forgive me if I don't want an arrogant, hot headed, weak little man like you," the pidove snarked back, turning her head away from the male who, seeing his beloved already betrothed to another, no not just betrothed by outright slandering him, flew into a tizzy, taking into the air with a few flaps of his wings, eyes searching for a way in which to win her back. The pidove continued, on a roll now as she tweeted her feelings. "You weren't able to protect me last time a glameow came around, eh? Just crowed about how powerful you are, then tucked your tail and ran when the thing proved itself to be two times stronger than you. It was a good thing Taillow came by, the way you left me there to be turned into a snack!"
"You're mating with Taillow?" The fletchling said. Oh the depths of his despair! Not that macho man, all brains no personality, no finesse. The thing wasn't half as smart or half as attractive as fletchling. "I'm so much better than that bird brain! You can't possibly-"
"Its over," the pidove said, eyes narrowing, tone final.
"Would you all just shut! up!" Mags finally interjected, the pair having managed to get quite close while the drama unfolded. The little fire type puffed out her chest, narrowed her eyes, trying to portray the picture of someone not to be messed with. From behind her Sana cocked her head, finger to her mouth as she thought. Now that she was doing the math, fletchling were quite uncommon around here, weren't they?
If she was going to catch a pokemon to sell off, then it was a much better target than that run of the mill pidove.
But it seemed as if he was quite loud, and arrogant. Perhaps he would need training before reaching his highest profit potential. The girl's mouth widened into an "eugh" at that thought. She would normally just have Mag harass whatever pokemon until they got strong enough to withstand the overbearing little fire type, but Sana wasn't particularly sure it would work in this situation.
"I'm not sticking around to be kidnapped by some human," the pidove said with a final hmph, flapping her wings and rather inelegantly taking to the sky, leaving only the fletchling to return to the ground, head low in defeat as he took in the situation, realized the truth of the matter.
"Ugh, are you serious?" Mag spat while she crossed her arms in front of her body, stuck out a foot and tapped it impatiently against the ground. What a loser. "You can't even beat a measly little glameow?"
"I'll have you know that I'm the best of my family, well-bred! I'm strong, of course, and I would have done anything to protect pidove, but..."
"You blew it!" The fire type said with a laugh.
"She's kind of right you know. You can't take on things more powerful than you," Sana said, "its just very logical."
"The heart," the fletchling said, his voice wobbling with melancholy, but still even in this, putting on a bit of a facade, "is not logical. But what do you want. You've had your show. Just move on, I need to plan how I'm going to get back at that stupid taillow." Normally fletchling would have written the pidove as just another bitch for rejecting his advances, but he actually had liked her, had loved her even.
"He'll beat you if you're like this," Sana said without pause, hardly letting the flying type dream of how he would demolish his rival and win back the girl. "You are shrimpy for a fletchling."
"What!"
"She's right. I bet I could beat you in a fight. You need to get stronger, so you can smash all of your enemies into the ground, grind them beneath your heel," the magby said, face lighting up in excitement. A part of her was tempted to do just that with the fletchling, but it would be no fun beating an opponent so emotionally and mentally weak. Magby was itching for a challenge, she was itching for blood, and the bird obviously didn't have it in him right now to give her what she wanted.
Sana stroked her chin in thought. "I'll make you an offer, eh? Take it or leave it. But Mags loves training. If you want you can join us for a few weeks, come back here evolved even and you can take back your girl or whatever." (Seriously, this seemed like such trivial motivation to Sana, but apparently others got their "hearts set on things.")
"It could be a fascinating learning experience for everyone involved," the girl said, forcing her wide mouth into a wavering, uncomfortable smile. So what if she didn't plan on letting him come back and live on his own? She could sell him after he evolved for twice what his value was now, and then use the money to buy new lab equipment. That stuff was expensive after-all.
Reaching into her bag to pull out some of the supplies her father bought for her, the girl showed the flying type the round red and white sphere, placing it at the fletchling's feet. If he chose to go with her for his own selfish reasons she would accept. If he decided not to, well, then Sana and Mags would just move on. The fire type was beginning to look restless too.
