| Henry had a pokemon. It felt strange to think about it, to collect the reality of the situation and hold it in his head, to ponder. But here he was, collecting a much needed coffee break at some local shop, pale fingers wrapped around a paper cup, his name scrawled in some cutesy handwriting on the side. He couldn't tell if the coffee shop was a small one or some sort of chain, obviously he had much to learn about this region, the eccentricities that made it different and the ways it would remind him of home.
With a small hum the silver haired man brought the cup to his lips, let the sweetness of the cream and sugar melt on his tongue.
But thinking and boosting his energy was not the only reason he was here. Henry had let slip to an internet acquaintance he was moving to the Inset region only to learn they too were in the area for one reason or another. Generally, Henry was not the type to risk getting dismembered by meeting strangers, but if he had to be honest, travelling alone was lonely. And Henry wasn't an idiot. Glancing around, despite the time in the late afternoon, there were quite a few patrons sitting at tables sipping their drinks. A barista or two shuffled on the other side of the counter top.
The chat had been small, simple. Henry was pretty easy to identify. Not many twenty somethings had silvery hair after-all, but just in case he had described his clothes as well: simple black tee and jeans, nothing fancy. So he waited, his pokemon safe in his pocket. The chances were the afternoon would be interesting, at least. Though if Henry wasn't so desperate to have an ounce of human interaction he probably would have skipped it.
Being friendly to new people wasn't really his thing, after-all. He preferred them on an internet, a screen and anonymity between them. But perhaps this whole journey was about change, about changing himself. With a small quirk of a smile at that thought, Henry settled back further into his chair, scanning the room carefully.

and suddenly i'm singing out of line In between classes and studying back at university Calla hadn't really had much of a social life. There just wasn't time to go out and socialize when he had so much riding on his research and graduating. When the moments were slow, Morick in his own classes, Joey at work and Kenzi.... well, he wasn't sure what Kenzi did but but but- that wasn't the point. It was easy to feel isolated and alone during the few free scraps of time he had. So, turning to the internet for help had been a natural next step. There were people there, lots of people, and some of them were even kind enough to talk and shared similar interests to himself! One of the places he had eventually found himself was a forum dedicated to bug types. While they were well researched in some regards, with lots of fans worldwide, there were surprisingly few studies on how they coped in human care and similar things. It was interesting to see how the pokemon were through their Trainers eyes. It was clear that most of the people who frequented this place loved their pokemon dearly and he could respect that. While Calla was more fond of Flying types himself, he could see their charm. It hadn't taken Calla too long to start chatting with one of the forum's most active and passionate posters. That chatting had turned into PMs, which turned into sharing messenger details. While conversations were never very long Calla always enjoyed them. The other didn't reveal too much about himself but it was enough for Calla to think of him something like a friend. He thought maybe he was being over-eager in that presumption but he also thought it was better to be too excited than too cold. When the chance had come up, by happenstance, for the two of them to meet up- why, Calla had been ecstatic. There were certain things one could chat about easier in person than online, like the theorized emotional ramifications of replacing a bedrill hive's queen with a Vespiquen or vice versa. Too much nuance was lost through the written word if one wasn't careful and Calla never liked to take unneeded risks- like making his online friend think he was pro bee cross sectioning! Sure it made more honey but lowered the emotional well being of the workers too much! And, perhaps, Calla was a smidgen late. Another of the eggs he had been slowly collecting had hatched that morning and made him a bit frazzled. He had also been granted another egg by the board; at this point he suspected they just wanted rid of excess eggs and were sending them to him. This one was a Skorupi, and by the blessing of Palkia if that wasn't a fine coincidence! So, when he finally arrived at the coffee shop Calla's hair was in a dark frizz on his head. The small zubat had decided that it was the perfect place to hide and he didn't have the heart to move her. The tips of her wings stuck out like some type of bizarre hair-clip. His clothes were a little rumpled but at least clean; at least it didn't stick out as badly as it could given he had on a plaid flannel cuffed to his elbows and ragged jeans. It was easy to spot Henry even from a distance and he waved excited when he entered, Egg in hands as he flopped down gracelessly across from the other man. "Hey! Sorry I'm late! I got caught up!" He pointed to his hair and the Zubat before he plopped the purple egg on the table between them. "You're a lot more handsome than I thought you would be!" Giving a little laugh, Calla dug in his pocket and pulled out a few bills, ducking out of his seat and to the counter in a whirlwind of chaos before he gave Henry a chance to reply. How he had said it hadn't been filled with awe or anything; just that he was stating a fact. Henry was handsome, and that was certainly more than he had pictured when he imagined someone so passionate about bugs. Calla returned a minute or two later, whipped-sugar loaded- mocha- extra caramel- venti- something- mess in hands that he sipped with reverence. frog 753 words i was SO torn for this thread if i wanted to use calla or nikoli lol. on the one hand, calla is more likely to have used the internet to chat than nikoli. on the other hand, nikoli would be a lot funnier to imagine. maybe we can do a nikoli-henry interaction down the line? i think they would get along like a house on fire lmao also! the skorupi egg is one from my giveaway shop lol. all those eggs and pokemon i just think mentally that calla has with him but i never count them for things. i figured since henry liked bugs he might like to see it and also i'd get a free thread done for whoever might want it in the future. which, winkwink, if you do just tell me and it's all yours >:u MADE BY VEL OF GS

| Sipping his coffee, Henry watched the door carefully, hesitant. The weight of his journey was finally settling on his bones, and he had realized after he left the lab that shuckle was tired, exhausted from the excitement of being chosen and still unsure about Henry. Henry of course, had wanted to do nothing more than fill his phone with pictures of the shuckle, but he had settled for one little snapshot when the bug type wasn't looking. Henry gazed at it now, the peak of the scarlet shell on the corner, the long graceful curve of the bug's yellow neck, and, turned away, its small head with the beady black eye and the near permanent blush of embarrasment.
Henry sighed with all the love of a new father. Shuckle was simply too cute, and Henry was already thinking of the posts he would craft for his favorite bug type forum, the opportunities to gush. Henry glanced up from his phone when he heard the sound of the door opening, revealing a man with messy dark hair and rumpled clothes. He looked like he was in a rush, and it was almost comical compared to Henry, who despite his sea sickness maintained his carefully styled silver strands and tight, long-sleeved black shirt.
But then again, things tended to look put together on him just by virtue of his appearance.
What was of real interest was the vaguely purple shaded egg Calla held in his arms, and Henry wondered, perhaps somewhat too hopefully, that it contained a bug pokemon. But then again, Calla never seemed to hold more than a cursory appreciation for the species, not nearly as fervent as some of the other posters, Henry included.
The other was loud too, where Henry was all soft and low. Still, he couldn't help a small smile, and then a blush when Calla complimented him. "Calla, right? I don't look like your typical bug nerd, I'll admit," Henry said with a shrug of his shoulders. There was a certain stereotype: young kids with nets looking for their first pokemon or, more commonly, researcher types with thick glasses and acne. Henry, with his polished good looks, didn't really fit either. But he planned on ruling the bug fandom as their kind and benevolent king, soon enough.
Henry watched as the young man walked away to grab his own drink, and Henry had to admit Calla was handsome in a boyish way. Of course, he wasn't really his type. Henry had an awful streak of thirty somethings with more muscles than brains, but it was still nice to be making a new in-person friend.
As Calla returned, Henry opened his mouth. "If you don't mind me asking, whats in the egg?" 456 Quest just two giant nerds getting coffee ! | |
