โMax shoved a hand into his shaggy hair. It was damp with sweat and stayed pushed back, out of the slight boyโs face. His whole body had a thin layer of sweat thanks to the scorching sun currently rearing its fiery head. He was thankful he had opted for thinner clothes today, instead of his usual thicker shirts. Thankfully not too many people seemed to be out and about during this weather, the last thing he needed was to feel as if everyoneโs eyes were on him as he ventured to the lab. He was nervous enough as it was.
His green eyes scanned the large modern building, finally reaching his destinaiton. He could feel his hear rate escalate; partially out of excitement, partially out of fear. This was to be his first starter pokemon, his new partner in crime. They would forever be together training and growing together. He really hoped he didnโt find a way to screw this up. Giving a few nervous tugs to his dark hair, he took a deep breath and entered the lab.
The cool air blasted over him in a wave, causing him to involuntarily shiver a bit. He ritually picked at his lip momentarily, while his eyes took everything in. It definitely had that professional air about it, that he expected something like a lab to have. He spotted the front desk and tried to keep his demeanor somewhat normal, and wipe off what fear could be seen from his expression. He walked towards it before giving an antsy scratch to his shoulder.
โU-um, Hello.โ He spoke softly and inwardly cringed at his small stumble of words.

| Hotori was pretty well relaxed for the time being. Formerly being a lab aide in Johto and then transferring to Inset had been something of a culture shock to be completely honest at first. But now that she was settled in everything seemed to be just fine. If anything went wrong she could always call one of the more experienced lab assistants to give her a hand. That way she wouldn't risk messing everything up. But besides a few children wandering in and out to get some information so far everything had been nice and quiet. A lot more quiet than she had initially expected that was for sure. So as she sipped her soda and flipped through her book she almost didn't even look up when the door opened once more. Not until there was a voice that went along with it. With a smile she regretfully tucked her book away and stood up. "Hello, can I help you?" They were probably here for a starter Pokemon but there was no telling some days. For all she knew they could just want directions. | | | | | BY EDWARD OF GS |

โHe cleared his throat, checking to make sure his voice rang out normal. โYes, Iโm here to get my starter pokemon.โ He forced a shaky a smile, fussing over the straps of his sporty backpack.
There seemed to be no one else in the lobby besides the woman at the front desk and nervous Max. This helped ease some of his anxiety, he preferred that such an important moment was as private as it could be. Max appreciated that the lady seemed to be pleasant enough. Out of the many things he was worried about today, a small part was focused on the person who would be assisting him. He would be mortified to fail and make a fool of himself in front of other strangers, let alone do that in front of a mean mugged individual.
Even though Max was practically a ball of jittering nerves he tried his best to keep his composure and most importantly appear normal. Too many times had his grandmother knocked him upside the head, for inconveniencing her with his โquirksโ. He remained quiet as the woman did her job before a brief question sprang to mind. โUh, sorry ma'am, but do you have any fire types that youโre showing today?โ He inwardly let out a deep breath, he didnโt want to interrupt the woman while she was trying to get things done. Yet, he so desperately wanted a fire type to be his starter. He had always been intensely drawn to them, even though most of them preferred his spirited brother.

| She had been correct in thinking that he was here for a starter Pokemon. Perfect. With a smile she grabbed the clipboard and stood up so that she could see him a bit better. "I just need you to fill out these papers for me and we can get started! My name is Hotori and I'll be the assistant giving you a hand today!" It was exciting really. No matter how many times she had seen it done back home it had always been a thrill to watch someone pick out a new starter Pokemon like this. And now she got to help do it all on her own. It didn't surprise her that the boy asked for fire types. After all they were extremely popular when it came down to it. People liked the raw power that a fire type exuded most of the time which generally meant that they were hard pressed to consider other types. But that didn't mean she wasn't going to give it her all to try and make sure that she got the right starter picked out for him. Regardless of the typing. "Have you had a lot of experience with Pokemon before? Fire types can be hard to handle for newcomers." It wasn't right to generalize for the most part but by nature a lot of the fire type starters could be a bit finicky or have trouble controlling their flames one way or another. | | | | | BY EDWARD OF GS |

โThank you Hotori he spoke with a soft smile, trying to mask his shaky hands as he reached for the pen and paper. He nibbled at his bottom lip, with brows furrowed in concentration as his pen scratched at the paperwork. Max slid the the thin stack back to Hotori, while shifting his weight slightly from foot to foot. Max remembered when he went along with his brother to pick out his first pokemon, his brother couldnโt contain his excitement and had burst through the door without a worried wrinkle. Max had stood to the side with the other accompanying tag alongs, as his brother chose his new partner. It was a rambunctious cyndaquil that had the instantaneous connection with high spirited teen. The process had been so smooth and everyone had ohhโd and ahhโd over the little fireball, complementing his brother on his choice; saying they already made such a great pair.
Max felt the edges of disappointment creep at him as she questioned him. He knew she was merely doing her job in pairing him with the pokemon that would work best with him. Um, no not really he responded sheepishly. Although his brother had gotten his cyndaquil while they were still living with his grandmother, she was not the most welcoming to anything that had the potential to cause messes or destruction. So any interaction with pokemon were highly discouraged among the children.

| Hotori listened carefully, knowing that the boy was here to get a perfect partner meant she needed to be paying attention to everything he said. Otherwise she might miss something important. He hadn't had very much handling with Pokemon it seemed. Though some of the people who came in and out of here hadn't even seen a Pokemon first hand so she couldn't exactly fault him for that. "I see, that doesn't count against you of course but can I ask why you're so eager for a fire type?" It could be any number of reasons from wanting to be strong to just simply liking the type. And of course she wouldn't fault him for that either. But maybe he would be better off with something a little less destructive. Especially since he seemed so nervous about the entire thing. Finally with a few keystrokes she unlocked the case that held a majority of the available Pokemon.
There were many choices to choose from within this cabinet but only three that she could take and present to him. Giving him more traditional options seemed like a good idea. Especially considering that he was so new to this whole thing. Carefully she plucked out three of the spheres and set them down on the desk. She was certain that these would be the right ones. At least one of them would mesh well as his partner. "Whenever you're ready you can release the Pokemon from the balls. You can do it one at a time or all at once. Its up to you really." It was easier to let the trainers take their own pace with this thing so that they weren't overwhelmed by too many Pokemon all at once. | | | | | BY EDWARD OF GS |

โHis hopes rose a bit as she reassured him that a fire type wasnโt necessarily ruled out. Uh, my brother has one...and everyone likes fire types... And everyone likes him. He didnโt actually say that last part, but it was true. His brother was that kid. The kid that seemed to outshine others and acted out just enough, to get the right amount of attention from adults. Theyโd fuss at him and listen to anything he had to ramble on about. Max on the other hand was obviously quiet and so painstakingly shy, it was easy to gloss over him. Theyโre strong too Max envisioned an intimidating flame looming over him protectively.
He watched curiously as her hands fluttered over the mechanics, unlocking the access to his choices. He thought she might be able to hear how hard his heart was banging against his ribs, once she presented him the three pokeballs. She set them down purposefully and gave him a brief run down of the operations. He clenched and released his fists a number of times, then eagerly reached for the red and white balls. He vaguely knew how they operated, as his brother would, every now and then, allow him to release his cyndaquil. Inexperienced fingers fumbled with the first ball as this time a different feeling began to envelope him. Anstyness to finally meet his new partner caused him to impulsively grab the other balls and release each pokemon.

| So it was a popularity thing? It made sense. Fire types were flashy and got lots of oohs and aahs whenever they made an appearance. It couldn't be helped that a lot of younger trainers wanted to go for that sort of thing. She preferred when they went for Pokemon that matched with their personalities though or something that they hadn't even considered to be an option. Of course there were some that just put blinders on... Hopefully this wouldn't be the case as the Pokemon were released. She wanted this to run smoothly for them all after all. The first Pokemon released gave a small yawn as it looked around, hands rubbing his eyes as he tried to wipe the sleep from it. < It's so early... Can't we go back to bed? > The Snivy's tail whipped around and curled around his body. It was a bit longer than the normal Snivy's making it easier to curl. < Oh, great. Hello. > The grass type finally noticed that there was another person here and that this was probably the time for a trainer or whatever to come in and pick one of them.
Quickly after the second and third options came out. A fluffed up Torchic landed on the ground and quickly stood up. Her beady eyes quickly glanced around as she ran over to one of the chairs, trying to hop up onto it. < Up! I can't see everything from here! Up! > Of course her legs were small and she wasn't quite strong enough to make that sort of jump. Not when she was still young and inexperienced. But that didn't mean she wasn't going to at least give it a try. The third option of them all was more stoic than the other two younger choices. A scar over his jaw and eye creating quite a sight when it came to the blue lizard. Totodile sized up the newcomer with his one good eye, not saying much considering he didn't know anything about the human. But he wasn't going to scare him off on appearance alone hopefully.
