Allen had never been a procrastinator in his entire life. He had always been sure to do things promptly and as soon as the need arose for it. He filed papers on time. He woke up on time. He answered phone calls within moments of the phone beginning to ring. But with this task he found himself procrastinating greatly. He had come in on the late bus last night and had managed to find himself a hotel room. Checking out had been a breeze and it wasn't until it was time for him to actually go forward and go to the Pokemon lab did he find himself hesitating. The fact that a Pokemon egg had been waiting for him upon his arrival had made this entire thing a reality rather than some sort of strange dream. The egg had apparently been left by a family friend who was in the area and Allen could only think of one person that it could have been. But of course it had really only served to make him realize that once he went into the lab there was no turning back.
He wasn't brave like Wesley was. Which was what had made this entire venture seem so ridiculous to him. He wasn't someone who acted on impulse or tried to go out looking for adventure. He didn't care about glory and he didn't care about impressing people. But there weren't a lot of jobs out there for a former secretary who had been working for a company that went under due to embezzlement. They always looked to the secretary when it came to things like that and he was sure that if it wasn't for the fact that his former boss had been stupidly obvious about the entire thing he would have been jailed himself because of suspicion. It was just his luck that he had already been under the microscope due to... Other reasoning. Being found not at fault of course meant that he was free to go but it didn't mean that his resume wasn't extremely botched now.
He sat there with the unknown Pokemon egg in his lap and a newspaper in his hands. He had been nursing the single cup of coffee for a rather long time now. Long enough that it was a little bit on the cold side. He wasn't sure what else he could do to really waste it. Allen had a floating appointment today. While the lab knew that he was on his way he hadn't set down a concrete time. Meaning that he either needed to get going or risk his courage failing outright and he would just never get in there. He didn't have the money to keep hanging around the hotel and the best he could do was walk up and get to the lab... Setting the paper down he finally finished the cup of coffee. He had just enough to cover that without hurting his wallet too much.
Carefully he wrapped his arms around the egg and gently tucked it into the bag that came with it. Whoever had given him the egg had spent enough money on the things he needed to keep it safe as well. Once again he had his suspicions but without actually contacting him it would be nearly impossible to tell. And knowing him he wouldn't want Allen to think that he was trying to shower him with a million and one gifts right off the bat. If he was going to do this whole journey thing then he was going to do it right. He knew where the lab was having done his research on the town prior. He might not have been a secretary anymore but he at least knew how to keep up with his skills that he'd honed over the years. Fact checking and research to just name a few.
People who thought that secretaries simply answered the phone and filed papers had never really dealt with the day to day work that it took to keep up with it all. Not that he cared. He had enjoyed his work while he had it though... A shame he would probably never get to do that sort of work again. He liked being behind a desk... He didn't so much like the dirt and roughness of the wilderness that Wesley had phoned him about. But his brother was proud of him for being able to step up and do something new. Even if Allen wasn't exactly sure about it. Before he knew it he was actually walking. Away from the small coffee shop and down the road. He tried not to think about where he was going and why he was going there.
If he started to think about it too much again then he would get stuck in a rut of being unable to process it. He would stall out. He would begin to procrastinate. The fact that he had allowed himself to fall into that sort of thing already made him angry at himself. Well, not angry per say. But rather frustrated. His frustration at himself for getting into this position had already been bubbling up to no end. This was a job like any other and he was going to see it through to the end. A task in order to make himself a better person. His musings carried him to the doorstep of the lab. He checked his clothes, making sure that they were in order and clean. He needed to look presentable for this after all.
Taking a deep breath he pushed open the door and finally stepped inside. The cool air a stark contrast from the heat outside. He hadn't even noticed that it had been so hot out until he stepped into the building. He had been so focused on how upset he was with himself instead. "Hello?" Walking up to the desk he tried to see if someone was available. Or someones perhaps. He wasn't really sure what sort of procedure would take place here. Wesley had told him all about getting his starter but every region and every situation was different. He had no idea what to expect when it came to his own and when it came to Inset.

kick the dust up high "Remember, Mr. Paladeki, you have to go the Lab to pick up your official ID." "Right, right. I'm in Cass right now. You sent the stuff ahead to let them know, right?" "Yes, they should be ready and waiting. Thank you again for doing this. We know you've been retired a while...." "Ah, I'm fine. These old bones haven't given up on me yet!" Nikoli chatted for a few more minutes, cell phone against his ear as he meandered down the road of Cassiopeia. He had just arrived the night before and the head of the League was making sure he was all settled in. He had a pretty important job, after all, even if for now his biggest worries were wandering the region and getting antiquated with everything. He hummed when he hung up, hand resting absently on Raisin's back as the old Sawsbuck walked with him. His horns had already started to lose their pretty pink flowers and grow the thick leaves of summer, not quite the bush it would be in a week or so but on it's way. It would be nice to be on the road again. Just like old times. Added to that was the blessing of having caught up with his buddie's oldest kid, in a way. Grenill had happened upon Wesley out on the road of his own journey and passed that info over. Apparently Allen was on his way, or maybe already was, here in Inset. Talk about happy coincidences. Even if he didn't exactly know where he was, it had been easy enough to snap up a cute egg off the market and have it sent his way. Just as a gift, partially to help the other man out but also to ease some of the guilt of losing contact for so long. He made sure that Wesley had a present on the way, too, even if he was farther along his journey it seemed. Nikoli was so happy to know they were still okay. But, that was something to ponder on later. Maybe if he was lucky Nikoli could even meet up with Allen but he had stuff he had to do right now. It didn't take as long as he expected to cross town and soon enough Raisins was using his antlers to nudge the Lab doors open for them. He sighed as the cool air hit his sweaty face, giving a languid stretch as he did so. "Yelloh?" He called, lazy and pleasant. Nikoli kind of wanted to drag this out so he didn't have to go back outside so soon. He glanced around after his stretch, seeing that the Lab was empty save for one other person- who looked more like a Trainer, or maybe someone just visiting, than an Aide. But then Nikoli gave a double take, stepping closer. Could it really be? But, that pink hair, and he looked about the same age, and even if the picture was a little blurry and a few months old, he looked close to the picture Wesley had sent.... "Allen! My boy!" Nikoli grinned, smile splitting his face, rushing forward to pull the other man into a tight hug. He even tried to lift him up to give him a good natured shake like he had done when Allen was a child; his back would protest later but it was more than worth it. "Did you get my present? I've missed you so much, kiddo! I've been worried about you!" Bear hug over, Nikoli put the other down and gave him a playful jab on the shoulder, eyes shining. Raisins watched, amused, before stepping closer to give his own greeting. He nudged his face against Allen's side, tail flicking. It had been along time ago but he could remember giving little Allen rides on his back when his family had visited. It had been good times. ๐บ inari ๐บ , @mod 685 words here is the king nerd nikoli isn't here for a starter by the way! he just needs to pick up some paperwork to be an elite four and to meet up with allen! There were a million and one emotions that Allen could have been feeling when he walked into the building and saw Nikoli Padaleki of all people staring back at him. He'd had the vague idea that he knew that he was busy in the region at the moment but the thought that he might end up meeting up with him so soon was something that hadn't even crossed his mind. Not when the region was so large and there were so many people. There were thousands upon thousands of people that could have been in the lab instead of the red headed man in front of him. And yet here he was, stuck in a room with his father's best friend and the man who had been around for a good chunk of his life. There were a wide range of emotions but he shoved them down deep, trying to sort out the good from the bad right now would take up far too much time and was better just left alone. The less he had to mentally sort through the better it would be after all. Of course his confusion meant that he didn't exactly have the time to move out of the way either.
Trapped in the massive bear hug he wasn't exactly sure what to do. Moving around wasn't much of an option because just like in his youth Nikoli was much bigger than he was. Though he did wiggle just a little bit whenever he felt himself being lifted off of the ground in the midst of the hug. It was something that Nikoli would probably regret later if anything that he had heard from Grenill was true. Being set back down on the ground made him feel much more comfortable and the entire experience at least gave him a moment to find something to say. "You're going to end up hurting yourself doing that. You're not a young man anymore." Adjusting his glasses back on his face he did what he did best. Scolded the older man for his carelessness with his body. He knew at best that Nikoli had a wild streak and was irresponsible to a fault. But that was just how he was and without someone to tell him to reign it in there was no telling what he would do.
"I received the gift at my hotel room, though the note failed to include the actual species of the egg." Meaning he was somewhat in the dark as to what was inside. Not that it would probably matter much. He hadn't had much experience with Pokemon outside of a business setting so it wasn't like he could afford to be picky about it. He was sure that Nikoli had chosen the egg with love and care as well. He'd never been one to select gifts without careful consideration. Whatever was in the egg was whatever Nikoli thought Allen needed. He'd take care of it and love it regardless of what was inside. At least he would do his best to. Raisin actually garnered a smile from Allen. Patting the Pokemon on the head and running his hand down over the long neck he was pleased to see that the Pokemon was still in good health. He had spent many hours playing with this Sawsbuck in his youth and told him many secrets. Secrets that he hoped the old buck had kept to himself.
"I think you're a little overqualified for a starter Pokemon. What are you doing here?" He kept his attention and eyes on Raisin, continuing to pet the Pokemon to try and calm his nerves some. His hands shook slightly as he thought about how he really had no good news to tell Nikoli about the things that he had been doing with his life so far. He was an embarrassment to be completely honest. An embarrassment who had ruined his life by trusting someone he shouldn't have. By loving someone he shouldn't have. So while he couldn't calm his hands he had perfected keeping a calm tone to his voice and pretending that everything was alright. Then again there was no telling what sort of things Wesley had told Grenill about what had happened and then in turn what Grenill had passed on to his father. If he could get through this encounter then he could have a breakdown later.
