[attr="class","rostercat2"]Varland is a big dreamer, though he is always willing to put in the effort of making said dreams come true with hard work and perseverance. He's great at focusing and working on personal goals and objectives, but that doesn't mean much when he's got no idea what he really wants to do with his life in general. Before leaving home his exposure to other people was mostly just his family, and the brief conversation with a potential client or visitor to the ranch now and then so he struggles with things like formality and personal space. He also struggles a bit with maintaining relationships, because being constantly on the move makes it hard to really get to know someone before he's already drifting to his next destination. It's not that he doesn't want friends, he's just not as used to human interaction and the nuances and delicacies that come with it. If he does manage to make a friend, though, he's as loyal and faithful as they come.

Aside from people, Varland gets along fairly well with Pokemon since they've always been his most constant companions. Due in part to his lessons back on the ranch, he's always been fairly good at discerning a Pokemon's needs and desires and always takes them into consideration when planning his next move. He can be selfish and even a bit dismissive when it comes to the wants of other people (he doesn't really like to compromise if they're at odds with his own), but he's generally far more considerate to a Pokemon's. He likes all Pokemon generally, though he has a small bias for the smaller ones that he can hug or show affection to more properly.  

Varland is the kind of guy who will try anything once, though that doesn't mean he'll enjoy it. He has an odd sense of pride; he'll take any wager against him just to prove he's willing to take on any challenge and show he's no coward. (ex. someone bets him he wouldn't be able to to eat or drink something incredibly nasty but he'll do it while looking them right in the eye to assert himself) This tendency can get him into trouble depending on the crowd he's hanging with. His sense of shame is practically non-existent, aside from his embarrassment of his fear of ghost Pokemon. He's got an insatiable sweet tooth, though he doesn't treat himself very often or else he's liable to spend all of his remaining cash on sweets.

He's adaptable due to his travels, able to sleep just about anywhere he needs to. He couldn't always afford a place to stay in cities or had trekked too far from town by the time night had fallen, so he got very used to camping or sleeping wherever he could find space. He can't fall asleep without being wrapped around something, though he tended to use his backpack depending on where he was sleeping. He hates getting his clothes dirty but with his lifestyle it tends to happen a lot. He doesn't always get the option to bathe or shower because of it as well, so depending on his budget or how far removed he is from a body of water he can use to scrub down he can get potentially smelly. He does have a small bottle of cheap cologne to try and mask it if it's been more than a few days, though his cologne has a rather strong smell of it's own which you could like or hate.

He hates his tiny amount of stubble because it reminds him of the fact that that's about all the facial hair he's capable of growing, but he's usually too cheap to shave so he lives with it.

[attr="class","rostercat2"]Varland grew up on a small ranch near Fortree City in Hoenn with his parents and his younger sister Vena. The two were almost ten years apart in age, but they both took a shine to the other and often did everything together. Their parents raised Varland rather strictly in comparison to his sister as they were planning to pass on the ranch to him when he was old enough, as was the tradition in the family. They taught him the ins and outs of raising crops, working the farm machinery, and raising Pokemon properly, though the thing their ranch was most well-known for was breeding Pokemon. Inheriting the ranch was the last thing Varland wanted to do with his life though; he loved Pokemon, but that didn't mean he wanted to sit with them at home his entire life. He wanted to travel, see all the different sights the world had to offer. Meet all sorts of Pokemon, befriend and battle all kinds of people. As much as he adored his younger sister, he wanted to meet friends his own age and he knew he wasn't going to do that staying home forever.

Around age fifteen he began planning his grand escape several years in advance, saving up all the money he could get his hands on to use on his journey. He bought supplies carefully over the years, never close enough together that his parents would suspect his plans, and had them hidden all about the ranch in spots he knew they or his sister would never look. Shock, his trusty Minun companion from his childhood was his constant companion through these years, along with one of the family's Bayleef named Benny that he'd gotten especially close to. He planned to take Benny with him when he left, leaving Shock in the care of his sister and her Plusle, Ray. As much as he loved the Minun, he knew he would be miserable without Ray around and though it made his own heart heavy he also wanted him to look after Vena in his stead.

Finally, when he was around twenty years old, it was time to spring his plan into action. Whispering his final goodbyes to Shock and his sister as she slept, he crept out of the family home in the dead of the night to gather up his things and money he'd hidden around the estate. With Benny in tow he left, and never looked back. Over the next four years he wandered across Hoenn, his feet taking him wherever he was interested in going. From the top of Mt. Pyre to the hot springs in Lavaridge Town, from the harsh desert to even climbing the waterfall to reach Ever Grande City (though he lacked the badges to participate in the Elite Four challenge), he traveled far and wide across the region. After a few years, though, he began to grow tired of Hoenn. It had been fascinating and exciting at first, but he had explored most of what could generally be explored at that point and there was nothing new for him to discover. Not only that, but his funds were beginning to dwindle significantly after really only making money from the odd battle here and there, or doing odd jobs in towns sometimes. 

After careful consideration, he decided it was time to put himself out in the world for real, and make his way to a new region to explore. He chose Inset primarily because it fell within his meager budget, and made the tough decision to leave his current Pokemon back home on the ranch (he didn't want to worry about them potentially not getting the care they needed in this new place while he was struggling to take care of himself too). He snuck in so he wouldn't have to deal with repercussions from his parents, and left his Pokemon and a note detailing what he'd been up to and where he was going. Hopefully Benny would be proof enough that it was really him that had stopped in.

With that out of the way, he bought a ship ticket and a new outfit to start his new adventure fresh and ready to go! This time, he had a bit more of a goal in mind than he did when he wandered around Hoenn. Though he doesn't really want to be The Best, he wants to give battling in general a more proper shot this time around. Whether that be through contests or gym battles, or just random guys on the street, he didn't know. His biggest worry on the long boat ride over was money, which he'd figure out when he got there. Probably.
