please show some mercy in your distant tone
She was the darkness, she was the night, she was.... Happiny Lass!
Or, that's what she thought anyway. Being raised on comic book clippings behind one of the shops in town, Happiny had a lot of thoughts in her head about who she was and who she wanted to be. Taking down evil laughing clowns and guys in Piplup costumes was her number one priority these days, regardless of how few of those there actually were wandering around Cassiopeia.
On the list today was suspect one for the Totally Illegal List: some weird guy with a weird pink pokemon. He was acting pretty weird, at least Happiny thought he was, with how he was running around the park and had taken off his shirt. Gross. Nudity was, like, something humans had for being illegal, right? They were always weird about that kind of thing.
She waited in a bush, totally well hidden and with her butt not at all poking out of the leaves. He was gunna make another lap around soon, and that's when she would jump out and strike-!
< What are you doing? >
< Gah! > Happiny yelped and fell back, butt hitting the path. The weird pink... thing that was with the Suspect was there, floating just above the ground and looking at her curiously. Happiny jumped up, ready to defend herself, but the weird floating thing didn't attack. She just tilted her head and waited.
< I, > Happiny started, placing her little hands on her sides and trying to look big and strong. < am Happiny Lass! And I'm about to catch a bad guy! > She pointed to Caden, who was coming up the path, headphones in and panting as he ran. It was kind of annoying that he was looking at them both now, eyebrow raised; she had lost the element of surprise but she would not lose this battle!
< That's silly. > The pink thing rolled her eyes. < Caden is a Ranger. Or he was or something. I'm pretty sure those are the opposite of bad guys? >
A Ranger? Happiny had heard a lot about that group of superheroes..... the weird human didn't look like a superhero, but if he was a Ranger then he had to be, right? But, could she trust what this weird pink thing was saying?
The chance to join up with a real superhero coven was too great. This was a calculated risk that Happiny would be willing to take. After all, even if they were secretly super evil, she was the superhero and the superhero always won in the end. That's just how it all worked.
"SB?" The guy approached, hands on his knees as he panted for breath from his run. He was looking between Happiny and his pokemon confused. He looked kind of dumb, but also really strong. If he was a superhero, he must have been the one who was only really good at punching things. That was okay. Happiny Lass could be the brains of the operation.
< This pokemon thought you were a bad guy. > The other pokemon, SB, pointed her snoot at Happiny, who pouted.
< I was mistaken! You... uh... you're a fellow sibling of justice! >
The guy chuckled, straightening up and wiping his brow. "If you wanna put it like that. I just like to do what's right." The guy seemed more amused than impressed. That meant Happiny would need to step up her game in order to show him she deserved to join his order of heroes. "I'm Caden, by the way. Nice to meet you."
< I'm Happiny Lass! I'm going to beat up all the bad guys and stop their evil plans! >
"That sounds like a good goal." Caden nodded, then glanced over at the park bench where he had laid his shirt. "Wanna sit down and talk about it? I have some advice for you if you want to take it."
Happiny considered this before nodding. Advice would be very good; even a superhero could learn a thing or two sometimes. She followed the human over to the bench and squirmed up to sit next to him when he flopped down.
"You remind me a lot of when I was younger, ya know?" Caden started, glancing skyward. SB settled in his lap and the human absently started to pet her as a wistful look came over his face. "I wanted to be a hero but didn't know how to do it. Tried to take it all on by myself... then the Rangers made me get my head on straight. I went from just trying to help people to actually helping them. It was a lot of hard work, but it felt good."
< So.... should I join the Rangers, then? >
"Maybe? That's up to you. But, they could help you in the long run if helping people is the kind of thing you really want out of life. It's one of those things where you always have to improve. You can't let yourself sit down and rest too long or you'll get weaker and then bad people slip through your fingers. It's a lifelong dedication. Do you think you can handle that?"
Happiny paused and stared upwards and tried to see whatever it was Caden was seeing. All she saw were clouds as they traveled in white puffs across the sky. Certainly nothing to glare at like he was. Maybe he had super eyes or something.
< I wanna help people forever. > She finally decided after taking in his words. It sounded like being a hero was a lot harder than she had imagined it. Maybe if.... maybe if she joined this guy, he could be like her cool superhero mentor.

Happiny wants to be a superhero one day. Her thirst for justice is unquenchable and she's out to get all the bad guys and villains. While her love for vigilante justice is strong, she actually has no idea what to try and do other than 'kick butt and take names'. Caden can really see a lot of his young self in her, and he's glad that she was attracted to him and willing to take his advice on the proper ways to go about what she wants. She's loud, reckless and demanding but has a good heart. She's a lot more sensitive than she lets on as well and tends to cry easily when she doesn't get her way.
