◄ HAVEN'T YOU HEARD WHAT BECOMES OF CURIOUS MINDS? Leon probably should have read the papers for Inset before moving, because he honestly didn’t realize he was going to lose his damn rank. He had been level six in Kalos and now he was a measly one? What kind of crap was this? But he was reading the brochure now. God, he couldn’t even join back up until he got a freaking badge? Was he reading this shit right? His whole brow furrowed in concentration as he scanned the sheet while he chewed on a peppermint, cracking the piece in half between his teeth. He was shit at human interaction, but even he knew breathing something vile on a new supervisor or coworker wasn’t going to win him any favors. The way his face was scrunching up as he continued to read meant he might as well be chewing on a Koffing. Well, a Ribbon wouldn’t kill him. Looks like he could try to just impress them by helping out around the region too. Easy peasy- if, while reading, he didn’t come to the realization that he’d actually have to talk. With people. Damnit. He used his tongue to quickly clack the peppermint on his teeth in annoyance. When he said he wanted a fresh start, he didn’t mean this fresh. Leon tucked the brochure back into the slot before stepping up to the desk, scanning around for a bell or something to push. He breathed in slowly, letting it out, trying not to let his annoyance cloud every fiber of his being. “Is anyone here?” There, that’s good. Not too gruff, just loud enough. He could do this. He could… do this. [280] fitz (if you still wanna do it, otherwise i'll go post this in the mod stations)

Just like the peppermint in the grizzled ranger’s mouth, Sarah was feeling the cooling effect of her surroundings as she trudged back through the tundra biome. She was close enough to the elevator door to start tugging off her winter uniform accessories, standard issue scarf and cap in hand as the one gloved fingertip pressed the button to let her back through. Moments later she was stepping back into the lobby to finish out her shift at the front desk. She’d completely missed the man’s voice calling out and was so distracted staring at the to-do list in her hand she’d not seen him upon reentering the room either. They were short staffed today, and she was trying to do it all - as always.
It wasn’t until the smell of the minty candy snaked its way up her nose that her eyebrows shot up and she whipped her head around in a flurry of long black hair to see the man standing there taking up all that space and looking pretty disgruntled and ready to get through whatever he was here for. She didn’t recognize him as a coworker but he still seemed to carry himself like he’d been through more than enough of their trainings. Her head tilted in curiosity as she greeted him, ”Hello! How may I help you?” voice soft and even toned, hands still fidgeting away with the buttons on her overcoat. It was like a sauna in the main room compared to where she’d been, with the summer sun beating down outside.

◄ HAVEN'T YOU HEARD WHAT BECOMES OF CURIOUS MINDS? He was starting to space out, staring at a small spot on the wall. The ranger’s voice snapped Leon out of it. He hadn’t noticed her enter the room and his head snapped to the source of the voice. First, he noticed the getup, confusion marring his features. Why would she even be wearing...right, they had some intense biome shit in this facility. Kalos tended to scatter their care centers instead of centralizing them.
At least the disgruntled annoyance had faded because she looked adorable all swamped up in her coat. The difference was like a gyarados’ intimidation failing, making him look more tired than grizzled. “I transferred from Kalos.” He knew transferred was the wrong word, since he had to start over, but his brain was frazzled right now, staring at her. The cute trainers tended to flock to Laverre Gym so he rarely saw them entering the rangers.
“So I need a new partner.”That part was hard to admit, but he wasn’t going to go into details about why his former partner had dropped him. Damn weepinbell was probably with some fresh trainer now and collecting badges and bruises like candy on Halloween. “You guys still give them out, right?”

A slow smile crept to her face as his gruff exterior shifted little by little. Good. She preferred trainers be relaxed during this trial. It did nobody any good to be stern and stressed! That would only result in the Pokemon freaking out as well. In fact, she made it a point to make sure all questions were asked and answered before even taking them to the elevator. You could never be too careful. ”Kalos transfer...hmmm…” she said, the s at the end of the region name taking on a soft shh from the way she’d grown up hearing it pronounced. Her eyes lowered to the computer monitor as she typed in a few details to bring up their appointments, both today and upcoming.
”Ah, looks like we had you scheduled to be arriving tomorrow afternoon! No worries, you’re here now! So I assume you know all about how the rankings system works here, transfer or no?” she asked, shrugging the coat off onto the back of the cushy office chair and having a seat to gather the proper papers he would need - a few other forms from the run of the mill trainer since he was a ranger in another region. Background checks would need to come through and they needed to know how to locate him quickly if any issues came up.
“We do in fact offer the capture option for starter Pokemon in this region. As opposed to the lab in Cassiopeia we…. she realized she’d left him standing and interrupted herself, ”Please, feel free to pull up a chair while we go through the first step in the process.” her manners forgotten only momentarily before she continued with her usual spiel, ”We give trainers the opportunity for the chance at any Pokemon in our many biomes, some rare and some common. It’s all a matter of chance and we encourage only the right type of trainer attempt this method.” she said, giving a little sniff as the feeling came back in her bright pink nose.
”This is just standard paperwork, I’m sure you know a thing or two about what you’re looking at there…” she continued, handing the clipboard across the tidy desk to him, giving the faintest of dreamy sighs, ”Rank 6, hm? What a shame...”

◄ HAVEN'T YOU HEARD WHAT BECOMES OF CURIOUS MINDS? “Yeah, I know the spiel.” He didn’t have to be happy about it, and his grump did leak back through briefly. “Rank 0, effectively. Not even a ranger to start with.” He glanced at the chair before shrugging and throwing himself down. His muddy boots stayed right on the floor where they belonged. Leon may look like a mess but he hated spreading it from his person. “Yeah, random’s fine. Just wanted to get the ranger paperwork started.” He tugged over the clipboard, fighting back a sigh at her rank comment. He worked so hard for that too. Damn, there was a lot of pages to this. Good thing he at least owned an apartment at one point in his life. He actually tended to camp, but people liked addresses for some reason. Ranger ID number, which, why? If he couldn’t transfer what did it even matter? He was working himself up into annoyance again, pen digging just a little too hard in the paper. Once he got to the signature, he was gripping it so hard the pen bent just a little and the tip actually ripped the paper. Barely, but enough that he blushed when he handed it back. “You let any ol’ random trainer get something rare? That’s… unusual.” That was downright irresponsible, but he didn’t want to get kicked out for getting angry. Who the hell knew what kind of people they were working with? He was getting his starter the same day as his paperwork. It’s not like they’d have time to background check him in the meantime. Sarah hummed a nonsense tune as she turned to take care of a few email replies and tick a few things off the central to-do list so command would know they’d been taken care of. The taillow flock was doing better after the avian influenza scare a couple weeks back - it had been a false positive but they’d still ostracized the poor thing when it came back, no matter what its diagnosis said after the fact. Even among….or well, perhaps even moreso among, the wild Pokemon here and in the region itself, pecking order and politics seems to run rampant. Nobody was safe from being put in their place or out of it.
She hadn’t been with the Rangers long herself, she’d lucked out with coordinating before the sudden influx of new people to the region and was still coasting at the bottom of the pack herself. Seeing all the trainers passing through day in and day out made her wish she’d stuck it out a little longer herself instead of jumping headlong into Rangerhood. This man looked rough around the edges and she hoped she didn’t look that worse for wear by the time she got within the realm of the rank he’d had.
She balked a little at the accusatory tone he took on. As if she was the one deciding which trainers got what. “If they prove themselves worthy and the Pokemon accepts their offer to go with them then they’re more than welcome to take them, rarity or not. It’s just the luck of the situation. Any trainer worth their snuff could take whatever Pokemon they get out of here and turn it around to be a worthy partner.” she finished, standing as he handed the paperwork back. The warped pen made her heart sink. It was her favorite…and she hoped the rip in the last page wouldn’t cause her any issues down the line as far as storage and regulation.
“If you’ll just follow me…” she said, moving from behind the desk to start back towards the elevator.. A Pancham that had been snoozing in the corner in a box full of gloves and scarves discarded from other Rangers rolled out of her nap spot to try to steal the chair back, preferring it to where it had moved when she’d come back into the room. Sarah heard the scuffle and remembered she should probably get a Pokemon to come along just in case they had any trouble, “Petunia, come on. You can nap later, silly!” she said, standing and waiting for the panda to shuffle along after them.
“The biome primed for a capture session is the forest.” she told him, stepping into the lift and pressing her palm to a panel before keying in the code to take them where they needed to go. “There’s a wide variety of Pokemon there, so I’m sure anything that comes along will suit you well.”

◄ HAVEN'T YOU HEARD WHAT BECOMES OF CURIOUS MINDS? He kept his eye roll internal about ‘worthiness’, but pokemon did have minds of their own. If they wanted to be with some idiot, so be it. “All pokemon are worthy partners.” It’s the humans that are dicks. As he stood, he could hear the scrabbling of the Pancham and quickly moved away from the desk so it could take it’s nap. Oh dear, its name was Petunia. Fuck, that was adorable. Leon followed along into the elevator, careful not to accidentally step on the cute Pancham. He stared down at it, partially distracted from the ranger's words. He figured he could get away with only half listening since this wouldn’t be anything extremely new. “Hopefully nothing that’ll set your forest on fire though.” He was mentally ticking off those unsuited for regular temperature greenery in an attempt to guess his selections. Honestly, it didn’t matter much, he’s dealt with just about every Pokemon native to Kalos and the occasional dipshit trainer from other regions. He could handle anything. “So, first thing that approaches right?”[175] fitz

All Pokemon are at their base wonderful creatures and we’re lucky to have them.” her hand rested on Pancham’s head, a fighting Pokemon who turned out to not be up to hurting a cutiefly. “But if you need one for a certain task or career, it’s up to you to make sure they are able to bring out that potential. So a trainer may come in thinking they need a Vulpix to perform in contests. But if a Bellosom presents itself, then the trainer’s ability lies in what they would be able to bring out in that surprise. The other side of that coin, however, is being able to see what’s in a Pokemon that may be better suited for other things, and allowing them to flourish there too. It should be a partnership and not an ownership on either side of the equation.” she wrapped up her spiel once the elevator doors closed behind them and went into her rehearsed speech on what to expect. His comment on forest fires caused her to not be able to avoid a slight chuckle, “Good, you’re using your noodle, Leon.” she said, glad he wasn’t hiding the fact that he was running a process of elimination on the potential starters that could walk by in this biome. “And yes, just whatever decides to show up. We’ve managed to luck out so far and not have multiple show up at once….not sure what we would do in that case to be quite honest.” Being the very basic rank she was, she wasn’t privy to any information on just how things managed to run as smoothly as they did. They just...did. The elevator doors slid open briskly to allow a different kind of warmth hit their skin. A sticky humidity causing the air to thrum with the high pitched whirring of a slew of bug types. Sarah felt the hair on the back of her neck stand on end at the sound. She loathed bugs! Petunia toddled over and grabbed her hand, gnawing on a bamboo leaf and giving her hand a tug to pull her on out onto the soft mossy earth. Sarah steeled herself and led Leon out too, “Good luck, Petunia and I will trail you and stick close by if you have any questions or if things go a little wonky.” God she hoped nothing too tough or aggressive came through. She had stronger Pokemon in balls on her belt but she didn’t want it to come to that. She hated battling. They didn’t have long to wait when a patch of grass began to shake, ending with a long dead log to roll straight up and backwards. < Hyaaahh! > a puny shout bounced up the path towards them as a tiny mushroom pushed his way up out of the ground...apparently being the source of the entire log moving all on his own. < Yeaaah get sooome! > he yelled, flexing the tiny slits in his stem that posed as arms. He was heckin PUMPED! “Huuu….well….there you go. Foongus...uncommon...level five...feel free to introduce yourself and see what his personality is like….he seems pretty lively to me already.” Sarah said, giggling. ✿ Junier of WW [newclass=.bbb-icon]margin: 0px; border: 10px solid #ffffff; width: 100px; height: 100px; -webkit-border-radius: 100%; -moz-border-radius: 100%;[/newclass] [newclass=.bbb-icon img] width: 100px; height: 100px; -webkit-border-radius: 100%; -moz-border-radius: 100%;[/newclass] [newclass=.bbb-txt] width: 200px; padding: 10px; margin-top: 40px; margin-bottom: 40px; color: #888; font-family: calibri; font-size: 10px; text-align: justify; [/newclass] @saltine - here u go!!

◄ HAVEN'T YOU HEARD WHAT BECOMES OF CURIOUS MINDS? Leon spent most of the elevator ride just staring at the two of them, but as the doors opened he was quick to leave, seeming unbothered by the humidity or the heat. As it gathered on his skin, he briefly picked up the edge of his shirt to wipe off the excess from his face. “When you said forest, I didn’t think it was tropical.” But at least they weren’t using some sort of fake raining sprinkler system right that second. The buzzing of bugs attracted his attention. Bugs were a good type, often dismissed by many trainers but they tended to wreck his grass team mate. Certainly wouldn’t mind one… His eyes immediately shot to the rustling grass, narrowing as he squatted down. Tight jeans stretched over his ass as he waited… The log rolled over, the ground shook, something shouted and it’s a- A foongus. Well, not bad. Leon did like grass types, and its powders could be useful for stopping other trainers in their tracks. “Tough looking little guy.” He lifted his head a bit, nudging it towards the foongus and making sure it saw him. “Hey there. What are all excited for?” [196] fitz

He’d started growing on the underside and knew he had to move it or perish! Or at least...that’s what he’d cooked up in his head. He almost didn’t hear the comment from the sweaty human man with his silly haircut and cut abs. But it was as if he were tuned in to specific trigger words to set him off. He whirled into the air and landed a foot away, closer to them on the path, his stubs going to where anthropomorphized hips would be on his stalk < Who you callin little, punk? Bet your butt I’m tough! HrrrRRGGHHH > he squeaked, doing another forward flex, straining just a little with the grunt as his eyes bulged and the design on his umbrella’d top seemed to pulsate. It took him a moment to realize there’s been an actual question posed to him. He stopped the flex to catch his breath, hopping a little closer, spinning on his stalk to look back at the lodge, < Did you miss it?? I could prooooobably do it again! I moved...that...LOG! > he said, getting pumped up all over again remembering it. He gave a little boing getting some good air and spinning again, so psyched! < I’m the biggest and strongest and toughest of all my brothers. They don’t have my drive! My stamina! My STRENGTHHHH! > he erupted, < Anyway what’s it to ya? Who are you? Only people I ever see go by look like that funny looking Bellsprout. > he said, his circular mouth forming the closest thing he could make to a mischievous grin as he teased what he saw as a skinny body and big head with Sarah. Not everyone could be blessed to be a mushroom, after all! Sarah’s lips pursed in annoyance but she gave a little huff and shrug and let them talk it out. < You like liftin logs? ◄ HAVEN'T YOU HEARD WHAT BECOMES OF CURIOUS MINDS? Leon couldn't help but smile, but made it twist up smarmily instead. Thing was as proud as a group of litleo. He didn't want to insult it by smiling like an indulgent parent. The joke about Sarah went right over his head though. He assumed the foongus meant an actual bellsprout. “Pretty big log.” It wasn't huge by human standards, but it’d be annoying to lug around. Lift, though? He could do it. Two choices popped into his head. “I saw it moving, and couldn't believe it was you tossing it, til you popped out.” He could either lift the log to prove his worth to the little mushroom, or he could try and ‘fail’ to let the little guy keep his pride and dreams. Leon stood, cracking his neck as he sauntered to the log and examined it. “Let's see…” No good hand holds besides wrapping his arms around it, and it was a little thick for that, but it looked like his best option. He leaned over, adjusting his grip as he rolled the log side to side to get his hands around it. Once he had it in an awkward hug, he hefted it, bowing his back. It made it look like he was straining more than he actually was. It shifted like a centimetre before he grunted and dropped it. Panting, he shook his head, hands on boss knees. “Little too heavy for me.” (Phone gdocs doesnt let me check word count :( ) fitz

Foongus’s circle mouth popped right back into shape like a rubber band that had been pulled too far as he tried to smile even wider at seeing how impressed the human was. Not that he cared or anything! He had just moved the log for himself. < Yeah I’m preeeetty impressive! > Foongus commented for good measure, hopping back towards the log and waving his big top exaggeratingly forward as if to say “follow me!’
< Hahahaha! Idiot humans using their ARMS for everything! > Foongus thought, prouder by the second at how clever he was, never for a moment admitting to himself that what he longed for more than anything was a pair of real arms for lifting and throwing and punching. He’d heard stories from his older siblings that one day, if they trained hard enough, they would get arms! It just sort of...happened somehow!
He’d never met his parents, he and his siblings had just grown out of the ground. So he assumed they must have seen his parents before they left to wherever they’d gone, and that's how they knew what growing up gave you. So that’s what kept him going every day, knowing he could have arms if he was strong enough and proved himself.
But this human made arms look utterly useless! They couldn’t even lift logs! He knew if he had arms like those he would pick up SO MANY THINGS! < That’s okay, human, you tried! > he said, hopping to stand next to his boot and giving a comforting pat on the shoelace. When he pulled his stub back it clipped in one of the metal hooks on the boot and he cried out in alarm, < Not again! >, unbothered by the pain and more annoyed that he’d had yet another accident. He went to hop away to rub it in the dirt - a tried and true healing method in these parts was of course to rub some dirt in it - and tripped and fell right on his face.
Sarah started to move forward to help him but a gentle tug from Petunia kept her cemented in place to see what Leon would do. She was already impressed with how well he was doing getting on its admittedly low level, and figured he had taken care of a mildly injured Pokemon or two in his day.

Well score one for Leon, the foongus seemed very pleased with himself. But as he patted his boot and got hurt, Leon had to raise a brow. “Not Again?” He repeated. And then the foongus tripped. Leon wiped his hands off on his pants. “Getting a little hurt is all in the process of getting a little stronger.” Much as Leon hated gyms for making trainers over work their Pokemon, the actual process of battling was good for most. He hesitated for a moment, unsure if help would be wanted. “You want some help?” Instead of directly lifting the little guy up, he shifted around and held his hand to the foongus’ head. The foongus could easily shift himself into his palm and let Leon upright him. “We'll rub some salt in the wound. That cleans it out good.” Completely unaware of the foongus’ dirt wants. “How about we get out of here and both start training up?” fitz

Foongus felt his eyes twitch with tears of shame at how clumsy and accident-prone he could be, but he sucked it up like a MAN! And rolled over onto his back and..right onto Leon’s palm! Foongus slapped the human’s fingertip with a low-five of appreciation, < Thanks bro! > he said, his voice dropping to as low a timbre as it could to get him pumped again and put the incident behind him. He heave-hoed back up to his stump and gave a little twirl to show he was alright. These sorts of things happened all the time, < Comes with being so top-heavy and swole! > he said, shrugging it off, < Dirt’s better but…. > he stopped mid-sentence when the human dude offered to take him with for some righteous training. < Wha- WAHOOOO YEAH BUDDY LET’S GIT! > he cheered, bouncing several times and nearly falling again but catching his balance just in time, going into a weeble-wobble swivel to right himself. < We gotta work on your log lifting, bro. Come on. No time to waste! > he said, taking the initiative and hopping towards the big freaky space they’d walked out of.
