Carm is a go-getter, too empathetic for her own good. Her ambition pushes her towards the goals she sets, but often its her feelings that get in the way. From a young age Carm has always been a people-pleaser: trying to put others before herself. An admirable trait, but whether it derives from fear of disappointment or genuine interest in others’ wellbeing is still unknown. Balancing her own needs and the needs of others continues to be an ongoing struggle for Carm, but she will not let that stand in the way of her fulfilling her dreams (no matter how long it takes).

Carm is a classic introvert: entertaining others has never been a strength for her. She tires quickly from being around other people and often needs to recharge in solitude. This has never been the case with Pokemon, however. Carm finds the company of Pokemon comforting, uplifting, and energizing. They seem to understand her better than humans do, sensing whether or not to give her space. Though she is perhaps more reserved about her goals than fellow trainers, Carm knows what she wants and knows how to get it. It is through her growing understanding of herself that she is able to understand her place in the world and how it works. Her dream of becoming a highly skilled trainer (perhaps even a gym leader) trumps the nagging qualities of her introvert self. If she needs to put on a good face and suck it up, she will. For her sake and always for the sake of others.

[attr="class","rostercat2"]The Vess household was always welcoming. Whether it different people, ideas, or perspectives, Lana and Henry Vess were open to it all. They could not have been more eager to welcome their Carmilla into the world. The family was an amalgam of sorts, the perfect mixture of art and science. Lana, a painter, and Henry, a scientist at the Mossdeep Space Center, provided Carm with a healthy space to learn and grow. While her father would be tinkering in the lab, her mother would take her out on the water. While her mother was away at a gala, her father would let her watch the astronauts in training. Though they were both successful, neither was ever away from home for too long. There were moments of overlap, though, and that’s when Carm could spend time with Pokemon.

Her upbringing allowed Carm to explore the world from various perspectives. She grew to understand that everything is connected whether it be in her studies or her relationships with people and Pokemon. School could not have ended quickly enough for Carm. She enjoyed learning, not lecturing. The skills she needed to become a Pokemon trainer were the ones she’d learn out in the world, not some classroom. For her parents sake, she studied hard and passed with honors. Sure, it would help in the future, but to Carm it was just delaying her true education. The school environment did help her to learn to interact with people, from awkward school dances to after-hours clubs. Carm had a handful of friends, but found she got on best with one close friend: Maura. Maura was Carm’s best friend and first love.

Things weren’t always clear to Carm when it came to romance. Her parents were more than supportive of her being gay, but she just wasn’t entirely convinced herself. She was open to trying different things and testing all her options, but Carm’s comfort truly lay with girls. Maura would always invite Carm to go wailmer-watching. As time passed, Carm became more aware of her feelings for Maura and little did she know those feelings were reciprocated. However, around the age of 18, Maura moved away to the Kalos region where her father would further his study as an archaeologist. Her absence hit Carm hard, and she began spending less time with people and more time out meeting pokemon. She loved Pokemon, and worked hard to understand them in the hopes that her journey as a trainer would one day take her to the Kalos region.

Carm often reflects the conversation with her parents. It was almost ordinary: over dinner after her father returned from work. She looked up from her plate, palms sweating. “So I’m leaving for Inset tomorrow.” The room is silent, but if shock could make a sound it would reverberate through the house. Carm went on to explain how she wasn’t getting any younger and was eager to start her journey as a Pokemon trainer. “But why Inset?” they asked. She didn’t even know herself, but it looked as good a place as any for new opportunities. Her parents seemed to understand and weren’t opposed in the slightest, it was just more abrupt than they’ve known Carm to be. With her bags already packed, she kissed them goodnight in order to get an early start tomorrow.
