It was a tough decision that she'd taken her time making. The last time she'd been in anything close to this position was a good 15 years ago and even then it had been chosen for her. She had a few more tough decisions to make even after this one, but first things first was deciding where to even go - to get her "starter" Pokemon. On the one hand, visiting the Ranger's station could be just about anything, from what she'd heard and read. So while she had every chance of getting something impressive and magnificent - she had every other chance of getting something...not that.
Soooo, yes, the idea of ending up with a caterpie was enough to put her off of that option. But from what she'd heard of the lab in this region where people travelled to to get their starters, they had a huge selection - but you still were only able to choose from three offered, and she wasn't even sure if you got any say in preferences as far as type or disposition. More than once since coming to this new region from Kalos, she'd wondered if she made the right decision to come, period, but definitely wondered if she perhaps should have kept at least one of her old dream team.
Portia would have been good company and there was nothing quite like a persian to keep lechers and lifters at bay. Not that she'd had any issues with them just yet...she'd budgeted quite nicely to have only the best accomodations in the few weeks she'd been in Inset, and that included being able to stay outside of the seedier parts of the city she was staying in up until today when she'd rented a car and driven up to Cassieopeia at long last.
The library in Circunus had provided plenty of entertainment when it came to her research on the region. A plethora of local information was found there that apparently hadn't made it to far flung regions where Inset had probably never even been heard of before. It painted a clearer picture for the seasoned coordinator on what to expect and where she would be going on her journeys.
The windows were down and the sun was shining brightly overhead as her long brown hair tossed in the wind whipping through the car. The song on the radio just about made her forget the ball of nervous energy in the pit of her stomach that was growing bigger by the minute over what she was supposed to have accomplished by end of day. She sang along, it was one she hadn't heard in ages but somehow still knew every word of the silly pop ballad. A quick glance at the GPS told her she would be arriving very soon and sure enough around the next bend, the town came into view.
One hand reached delicately forward to turn the music down before she tightened her grip on the steering wheel and let her foot up off the gas, coasting into town ever so slowly. Leaning up in her seat and peering out the windshield at the real official place her adventure was to begin. Sure she'd spent a few weeks in Circunus, but that had felt like a mini-break compared to the weight that fell instantly onto her shoulders when the sign for the lab came into focus up ahead.
The town was surprisingly bustling and from the look of excitement and nerves on the faces of most of the people meandering about as she drove by, she had to guess it was because this was the epicenter of so many other new chapters as well. Nothing else about this place seemed to be a significant draw. She honestly couldn't help but to wonder as to why the lab was placed in such a smaller town anyway. Wouldn't people rather see a few touristy things and have nice hotels to stay in, lovely restaurants to eat in, while visiting a town to get their starter?
After circling the block a few times waiting for a spot to open up she finally was able to whip in and parallel park right outside of the building the lab was housed in. She would have driven for a good hour to avoid walking any great distance and breaking a sweat or one of her heels on her way in. Another moment to collect herself and her thoughts - and the paperwork she'd gotten copies of and filled out the night before thanks to some digging in regional archives. That would save that step. Her name, her age, her former location and previous experience with Pokemon, yada yada yada. And written in the same swirly girly script, in the same sparkling pink gel ink above favorite type? Fairy.
She closed her eyes with a smile and pondered on whether they had any of her favorite perfect pretty angels in this lab before finally giving in to the inevitable and vacating the vehicle. The sharp chirp from behind her echoed into the lobby of the lab as she opened their front door and locked the car in the same motion with the remote pointed over her shoulder. She dropped the keys into her handbag, snapping it closed right after and swiping at a smudge on the clasp as she approached the front desk, looking out expectantly to see what to do from this point. "Hello? I'm here about getting a starter?" she called out, not overly loud but clear enough to be heard.

--- It was a... surprisingly quiet day today in the Lab. Delilah sat behind the front desk for her shift, a crossword puzzle book in hand as she waited. It was a slow day today, too. Not many had been in or out in the last few hours, be it new trainers or just guests of the lab. At least that changed when a woman walked in who looked about her own age, asking for a Starter. "Good day. What's a four letter word for an animal or insect that causes damage?" She scribbled something down then sighed and put down her book. She could look up the answer later, she guessed. It might have been seen as rude to ignore what someone was talking about. "Sorry. I'm Delilah Graves, and it's nice to meet you. I'll be the one guiding you through getting your starter today." Delilah moved to grab the clipboard of paperwork out of habit and pushed it forwards to fill out. "If you have anything you're looking for, we will try to accommodate but we cannot make promises on anything." < Delilah! > Flitting through one of the lab window was a very small pokemon- A Cutiefly. It was very clear to see that this one was not normal. It was double the size of a regular cutiefly, a whopping 8 Inches instead of the usual 4. < I need encouragement! >Rolling her eyes, Delilah turned her attention from the woman to the big and fairy type as it landed on her desk. "There's no one as easy to bolster as you, Cutiefly." She hummed, mildly amused as the pokemon 'flexed' and showed off his nonexistent muscles. "Would you like to be one of the choices for this lady?" < Of course! > Cutiefly turned and looked Aislin up and down with a critical eye before nodding to her. < As a specimen, yes, I'm intimidating! But perfect for whatever task you could need me for! >MADE BY VEL OF GS

”Er….I dunno, pest maybe?” she said, caught off guard and lingering by the door with her hand on her purse strap. Of all the things she figured she would be asked here, that wasn’t one of them. It took her a moment to realize she was doing a word puzzle. How….quaint. she thought, smiling and breathing a little more easily. So not an out of the ordinary selection process, just a bored desk worker trying to pass the time. She was glad she’d never had to settle for a job like that. But it probably was better to not let those sympathies known. ”Good to meet you as well, Ms. Graves. I’m Aislin Byrnes.” she said, returning the pleasantry and narcissitically wondering if her name rang any bells. As the other woman went to hand her the clipboard she was one step ahead of her, pulling the papers she’d already completed from her bag and handing them over. ”I took the liberty of doing some research on your process beforehand to eliminate any delays or questions I may have and forget. They had the paperwork on file at the archives the next town over.” She wondered if she should specifically request a fairy type or try to press the issue and had been a moment away from diving in and asking about their availability when lo and behold a half-fairy type made its way through the door. Of course it took her a moment to recognize the Cutiefly for what it was since it looked like it had been pumped full of steroids or something. That was easier than expected…. she said, bemused that a fairy type had just landed in her lap. Even if he was a bit full of himself, she couldn’t say she wasn’t herself. The flexing made her grin. He was a card, that was for sure. ”I think I can handle you, intimidating specimenship or no. You said you needed encouragement, whatever for? Surely a big strong fellow like you has confidence to spare?” she said, launching right into a casual conversation with him. She hoped she could get him comfortable enough to let his flaws show. He was already mutated in size which could honestly either help or harm them in competitions. There were species standards to adhere to but more and more these days it seemed mutations were something being sought out so long as they were aesthetically pleasing. She wondered how it would affect his evolution and if it already affected his abilities or movement in any way. Afterall, a cutiefly that weighed twice as much and just lumbered around the arena rather than flitting to and fro gracefully would do her no good. And breeders may be less likely to use him as a stud with such an abnormality. And even with him being fairy type he was also bug. And she tended to hate bug types. Cutieflies were a rare exception from how adorable they were but she wasn’t entirely sure if she’d be able to get over that. ”What do you think of doing contests, cutie? Do you know what those are? I’m a coordinator and would be travelling quite a bit, putting you through rigorous training to develop only the best moves to perform with. Is that something you’re interested in or are you all about throwing your…weight around in a fight?” She drummed her perfectly manicured nails on the countertop, wondering what other Pokemon may be brought out as she had already just about convinced herself that the cutiefly wouldn’t be who she left with. But who knows, he may surprise her with his answers. She glanced to see what Delilah was up to, looking expectantly over the other woman's shoulder towards the huge cabinet where the other pokemon were stored in their balls, then to the doorway beyond the counter where others may be running loose. She tried her best not to appear impatient but Arceus she was just getting more and more excited to see what would come next. "How do you go about selecting starters to present, by the way? Do they usually just fly in and end up on offer or...?" Oops that sounded kind of bitchy. Which...she was but. She didn't mean to sound that way.
"No disrespect of course! Just genuine curiosity!" she added in a rush, smiling demurely.

--- Ah, 'pest'... Delilah was pretty sure that was perfect. She would need to remember that for when this was over so she could fill it in really quick. There was a look of pleasant surprise when Aislin handed her the papers. Delilah took them and looked them over quick before putting them away and standing up. This cut a lot of time out of this whole process. "Ah, thank you. It's not often someone in comes in prepared." She gave the other woman a small smile and went to the vault to pick out a pokemon. She hummed and flipped through a few things, checking papers and certain balls as she did. She had to be careful with this, after all. < I would be a most excellent coordination pokemon! Or an excellent battler! There isn't anything that I can't do! > The Cutiefly placed his hands on his hips and puffed up his chest, nose in the air. Yes, he was the very best wasn't he? < Who could resist a fine body like this? You'll be swimming in ribbons! They'll be throwing them at your feet! >Delilah laughed quietly from where she was at. This Cutiefly was always so funny to her. Still smiling, she turned around and released the other two starter choices. She was honestly used to questions like the one Aislin asked. She had been insulted the first time she had heard it, but usually most trainers were honestly just curious. So, she just shrugged it off and moved on. "If a pokemon happens to come through when someone is here, we usually allow them the chance to be an option if that's what they want. The goal of all the pokemon in the lab is to someday leave it with a trainer, after all. It also gives new trainers a chance to leave with something they hadn't expected to love. Do you know how many 'fire specialists' end up leaving here with a grass type cause they fell in love with one who happened to come by?" Delilah just seemed amused by this. The two pokemon gave a stretch. Maybe not exactly what Aislin had wanted, but she had never really specified either way. The Elekid walked over and stared up at her, head tilted and the occasional crackle of electricity sparking from between the electrodes on her head. Sneasel seemed much more interested in the Cutiefly than in Aislin, crawling up on the desk to sit next to him. MADE BY VEL OF GS

Aislin leaned against the desk, her chin resting in her palm as the Cutiefly buzzed around flexing his muscles and bragging about just how versatile he was. She had to admit he had a point, he was impressive. But could she really put up with that attitude? After all she probably had enough diva in herself for the whole team, let alone taking one on as a starter. Would they be peas in a pod or constantly butt heads to battle for the spotlight? After all there was a time and a place for Pokemon to shine and that was in the ring. 24/7, though? That seemed far less appealing. The word she’d given the assistant came to mind. Pest. Her words couldn’t have been truer as she mentioned just how the selection process for starters was conducted. It made sense, she supposed - especially for brand new trainers who were going based off of what they thought they knew. After all, the proof was right here that she’d wanted a fairy type and already was put-off by its attitude. There was a great deal more to it than type, which was always something she’d kept in mind before. The evidence was in her former team, the team she’d left behind and missed every day. So long as it was beautiful or could put on a good show she could let it slide that it may not be a fairy type. Suddenly two more choices came tumbling into view. She smiled at the Sneasel, had always thought they were lovely Pokemon with an interesting look. While she’d never worked with one before on aesthetics alone this one had her attention. And then her gaze drifted to the toddling baby Pokemon who had actually come up to her rather than paying more attention to the ego-driven cutiefly. While it was nice to have the attention she knew right away it would need to impress her a lot to get her to consider it. The baby form was okay but it was ugly as sin when it evolved. Nothing appealing about it at all in her opinion. So while it could put on a show if trained properly, she’d rather have a Pokemon that could present the entire package. Still, she didn’t want to seem too rude, and kept her smile in place for it as well. ”Hello, you two. I’m Aislin - is it okay if I ask you a few questions?” she could care less if they were alright with it or not, except for the fact that if they were to refuse or clam up she would immediately have a better idea of who would be staying put. If a Pokemon were shy or had stage fright there was no way she was wasting precious training time on breaking them of that. ”Do you have any particular interests or hobbies that you’d like to tell me about? Any special skills or things you would like to do in your lives?” she asked, sinking into an armchair near the desk and daintily crossing her ankles.

--- The Cutiefly kept his ego high even as the other two choices were released- there wasn't a doubt in his little head that he wouldn't be picked over the other two choices presented. This was finally his chance to get out of this place! < Why, I am an excellent hunter! I could take down a Tyrantor with just a stick! >< Um, duh, you're fairy and it's dragon, Fly. That rock might give your bug typing some trouble though... > The Sneasel half muttered beside the Cutiefly. He reached out to poke at the other pokemon's wing, which cause the Cutiefly to turn and glare at the dark type. < I.... > Elekid kept looking up at Aislin, eyes shimmering with some type of amazement. < You're beautiful! > She lifted her paws to her face and giggled into them. < Can I do your makeup? And your hair? I'm really good, I promise! >Sneasel finally turned to face Aislin himself, crossing his legs on the desk and giving a big stretch. < I'm too apathetic to have hobbies. >Cutiefly shook his head and lightly shoved the Sneasel. < All you do is read, read, read you silly thing. You'll never learn anything that way! > Sneasel snickered at that, something like a smirk on his face. MADE BY VEL OF GS

Aislin snickered at the cutiefly. He really didn’t give up, did he? She passed a hand back through her hair, shaking it as her fingers pulled through and she waited for the other answers. Sneasel took his time, deciding to give a retort to the cutiefly and still didn’t reply to her right away. The little ball of electricity at her feet threw her for a loop and if she hadn’t already been seated she’d have fallen down right away to begin playing with it. Elekid seemed to genuinely be in awe of her and the compliment went straight to Aislin’s heart. Or...ego? She started to pat its head but the static crackle between its brackets made her think otherwise. Especially not after she’d probably just gathered some static of her own with her messing with her hair. She leaned back in the seat, scrunching her nose and watching the two on the desk nitpick at one another. It felt odd to have made a decision this quickly. In fact, she’d not even heard all of what the Sneasel had said or what the Cutiefly was teasing him about. She was far too busy racking her brain for electric type moves she’d seen used in the past, coming up with a routine already, playing up to the Baby Pokemon fans. Wasn’t there a swarm of them in the region right now, for that matter? She glanced down and smiled to the Elekid. She could get one of them easily now, but would they be as adorable as this one or so eager to have a girls day of makeup and hair and all the things a coordinator could want in a Pokemon? But there was the matter of evolving….she really didn’t think she could stand having that ugly thing on her team. At last, likely too long to have gone without speaking at all, she said to the Elekid, ”How would you like it if you could spend every day being beautiful and doing spectacular things? Performing and being cheered on? Are you scared of crowds?” she knew Cutiefly could handle it, the Sneasel was obviously not the right choice no matter how interesting he looked, but if the Elekid could appreciate the life of contests without hogging the spotlight like Cutiefly would then she knew she had her decision made. --- Elekid gasped, eyes sparkling as if Aislin was offering her the world. < That would be amazing! I don't think I'll be very good at first.... but if you took the time to teach me I would work hard to do my best for you! > There was a fire of determination in her voice as she spoke. While being a coordinating pokemon wasn't her dream, she would be more than happy to live that life if it helped her do what she really wanted. Delilah went ahead and called Cutiefly and Sneasel back to their pokeballs. It was usually easier that way since it looked like the choice had been made- by both trainer and pokemon. Delilah picked up one of the little bags of starter items and placed Elekid's pokeball inside before offering it to Aislin. female - 05 - static quick attack - leer - thundershock Elekid is an easily impressed but very sincere girl. She has a lot of heart and passion but isn't sure what to do with either. She wants to make clothes but she isn't sure where to start. She wants to be a good contest pokemon but isn't sure what that means. She's the type to throw herself at something 100% and put her whole spirit into something- but poor lack of planning often leads to it not going as planned. She can be a bit of a ditz at times if only cause she's so busy thinking of other things, planning and making goals, that she has a hard time focusing on what's in front of her. She's scattered and will need someone to keep her from jumping from project to project on a whim. She also puts a lot of work on herself she doesn't have to by taking on everything when she doesn't have to. Elekid has a hard time saying 'no'.
