Nervousness didn’t suit him. That prick of adrenaline running cold through his gut, heart pounding in his chest like he’d just ran a mile -- it just wasn’t for him. He tilted his head side to side, stretching, and tensed his calves. He wanted to run. Lift. Take a fucking hike back down the mountain so he could make the climb again. Something to vent this restlessness, which only built as he realized that itch to move would have to wait. Mike cracked his knuckles and let the methodical pop of each joint center him. Fear of the unknown had never struck such a chord in him before, and guilt -- that was a hard one to beat into submission. Maybe he should have brought some beer with him. “Aw, fuck it,” he grunted, glaring up at the rough wooden building like it had personally offended him. “Give in to a higher power my ass, the fuck does she think she knows, anyway.” (His therapist did, in fact, know quite a bit.) The idea of catching a wild pokemon on his own was growing on him, at least. It was how things should be, really, not the small army of lab-bred creatures the professors kept in stock. The anxiety had mostly bled away by the time he slammed the door to the outpost open, looking sheepish for a split second as it banged against the wall. “Uh. Lighter than it looks, huh?” The man behind the desk in the corner met his eyes with an impassive gaze. “I’m here to catch a pokemon, yeah? I brought my ID and all that shit,” he said, digging his wallet from a back pocket as he strode to the desk. “Here ya’ go. And then I just sign these?” He snagged a clipboard with new trainer paperwork before the guy could confirm, scribbling down contact information and a hasty signature. “What’s the craziest thing someone ever caught here?” he asked as he thumbed through the small packet of papers, “Like, you ever have to rescue someone from being mauled? I guess that’s regular day-to-day for you guys though, yeah?” Mike dropped the clipboard back onto the desk, finished, and cracked his knuckles again. A nervous tic, although he hadn’t yet identified it as such -- what if he found a fire-type out there? What if he didn’t? What if he ran into Killer again someday, and she resented him for leaving -- Mike cleared his throat. “So I just, what, go out and sweet-talk the first thing I see?” That antsy energy was back, crawling like static up his spine. He hated it.

IN MY HEART DRIP DROP YOU FALL ONE BY ONE Anyone who came in and already started on their paperwork was good in Kieron's mind. He got tired of handing over clipboards to people that had no idea what they were doing or what they were getting into. He figured this guy might at least have something of a clue. It saved time knowing that they were going to be able to just blast through this without having to do too much small talk. He liked that. It was better to just drop someone off in a biome and watch them make a fool of themselves instead. Except for the man's nervous talking of course. "One time someone almost drowned due to a gyarados not appreciating them getting so close to a nest." To be fair, Kieron had told the guy not to bother the Pokemon. It wasn't even supposed to be the guys starter. She had just been in the same proximity and the guy wanted to forgo the slowpoke he'd found for something 'bigger'. Which of course was against the rules.
That wasn't the worst thing that had ever happened but, it had been pretty bad. Kieron's swimming wasn't the strongest but luckily Yvette had been strong enough to stop the water type from rampaging too hard. That was why they went out with them after all. They were there to protect them. It was their job to protect Pokemon and humans and it wasn't surprising that at least one person would come to ask for it. "Sometimes you sweet talk them. Some people have bribed them. It just depends on the Pokemon." Honestly you never knew what would happen until you got into the biome to deal with it. But luckily enough they were about to find out. With the paperwork seemingly filled out he grabbed Yvette and headed for the elevator. < Come this way to find your new partner and friend! > As always the gloom was much more enthusiastic than he was.

”Gyarados? No shit?” Mike’s eyebrows hiked up his forehead, and he rocked forward onto his toes, his excitement all but overflowing. Fuck yes, he could go for wrestling a Gyarados for his first pokemon. Not his first, he thought, with a brief pang of guilt, but -- he had to start over fresh, didn’t he? What better way than to study water-types? His imagination drifted, skirting over the few others he could remember. (Gyarados was obviously the best and the brightest of that type, but there was also Sharpedo, and Feraligatr was pretty cool.) Hell, maybe he’d even wind up becoming a firefighter, and wouldn’t that be ironic? His fingers brushed over the cellphone in his pocket, deciding briefly if he should let Avery know where the hell he’d gone. It’s not like they hadn’t been talking about doing this -- going out and getting pokemon, becoming proper trainers -- but Mike decided to wait. Something about this needed to be private. Something about this needed to be more serious than he was making it out to be. This was his symbolic goddamn abandonment of hope at ever getting Killer back. He grit his teeth against the grim line of thought and scowled across the desk, watching his paperwork get stowed. This ranger didn’t need to see this side of him, Mike knew, and he forced it down. He leaned in and nudged Kieran’s ribs with an elbow as he passed, teasing. “I wouldn’t mind a Gyarados, yanno’, I could probably take it.” He flexed for show, glancing down at the Gloom for backup. “Eh? Pretty strong, right?” The elevator was a bit cramped with all three inside, and Mike lounged up against the back, arms folded across his chest. “I’m surprised y’all don’t free-climb down to this catching spot,” he said, breaking the silence that had fallen between them, “From what I hear, you’re supposed to have all sorts of badasses in your - uh, group.” He shrugged and stood tall, pushing away from the elevator wall to roll his shoulders. “Watch and learn,” he boasted, as he felt the elevator start to slow, “You aren’t gonna’ want to miss this--”

IN MY HEART DRIP DROP YOU FALL ONE BY ONE < Mama Gyarados would eat you in one bite! > Lovingly she patted the leg of the trainer as the elevator moved. Free climbing into a biome, now that was a new one. There was no way into the biomes from the top not to mention the elevator didn't only go down but to the side. Plus they would never get all of their work done if they had to climb everywhere. Not to mention how tired all of them would be by the end of the day. How would anyone be available if they were all nursing cuts and scrapes from climbing? "With over thirty different biomes and more Pokemon than I can count to care for, this is more efficient." This way they could get where they needed to go quickly rather than struggle with gear. Not to mention bringing Pokemon into the place. That would be a huge hassle. Fuck he wanted a cigarette already. Kieron grabbed a Pokeball as the elevator stopped, holding it out for the man to take. "Trust me, I've seen it all." He doubted very much that there was anything this guy could teach him.
The elevator opened in a relatively peaceful area. A field of flowers with a gentle breeze. They weren't going to get anything really rough and tough here. This was one of the transition zones for younger Pokemon into functioning in the wild. Bounding out of the flowers came a small normal type. Though its body ran awkwardly and couldn't quite stop in time before slamming face first into Mike's legs. Tears welled up in its eyes as it tried to rub its head. Unfortunately though paws just weren't good for that sort of thing. tags x @bagel MADE BY ★MEULK

The Gloom’s reply drew an easy smile to Mike’s lips, and he laughed at the chipper conviction in her voice. “I like this one,” he announced to Kieran before the elevator announced they had reached their destination with a soft ding. “If this goes sideways, can I take her?” he asked, teasing.
He didn’t bother to wait for the ranger’s response before stepping out into the… field? He squinted out across the stretch of softly swaying grasses, dotted at random with bursts of colorful wildflowers. It was hardly the spectacle he’d built up in his head, but Mike could appreciate the landscape, at least. He took a few steps out, shoes crunching over the grass, and squinted as he gazed out across the horizon.
So, what, grass types? That could be interesting, although if he was going to pull a 180, he’d halfway hoped he was going to find a water type. Maybe there was something big hidden out in the long grasses, something big and bulky like a Rhyhorn -- that would be awesome. The faint patter of small paws through the grass didn’t reach him until it was too late to move: a flash of brown fur and hard thwack as head met shin.
Mike startled half a step backwards, arms raised at his sides and one foot hovering mid-air, like he was afraid of stepping on the tiny bundle of fluff. He was silent for a beat, looking the young pokemon over before throwing a questioning look at Kieran.
“... For real? You guys pulling my leg?”
It was an eevee, he was pretty sure. That he had ‘asked’ the universe to guide him to the right type to train and received a pokemon with such potential didn’t pass him by -- and he’d definitely unpack that later over a couple of beers. For now, he knelt in front of the pokemon, knees cracking as he lowered himself.
“You alright there, runt?” he asked, harsh words contrasting with the genuine warmth in his tone. Sure, this wasn’t the manliest, and maybe there’d been some kind of mistake, but Mike wasn’t heartless. He grabbed the eevee by the scruff, just like he used to handle Killer when she was a pup, and peered down at the crown of his head. No blood, as far as he could see. Probably just smarted from headbutting his leg -- Mike's own shin was still stinging, so he didn’t exactly blame the eevee. (He was, however, skeptical of the rangers’ judgement if they thought this pokemon was anywhere close to battle-ready.)
“Yeah,” he affirmed, “Yeah, you’re just fine. Too fast for your own good, huh?”

IN MY HEART DRIP DROP YOU FALL ONE BY ONE The eevee let out a surprised gasp whenever he was lifted from his position on the ground. He wasn't used to being lifted like this, especially now that he was totally all grown up and not under his mother's care anymore. His back legs twisted and kicked slightly as he tried to adjust to being lifted like this. But defiant eyes met the human male who had picked him up. Though the effect was probably dampened by the fact that his face was still wet from the small amount of tears that he had managed to cry before calming down. He wasn't afraid of this big guy. He wasn't. And how dare he make fun of him for running into him like that. < How do you know I wasn't aiming for you? > Maybe running into him had been completely intentional. It wasn't of course. The sound of the elevator coming up had excited him to think that there was a visitor. But he wasn't used to running around like that yet and it had caused an accident. But that wasn't the point right now.tags x @bagel MADE BY ★MEULK

The eevee squirmed in his grip, and Mike found himself met with a surprisingly determined scowl. He tucked his hand under eevee’s back legs for support. The pup was heavier than he’d expected -- maybe not a pup at all.
< How do you know I wasn’t aiming for you? > The conviction in the eevee’s tone drew a soft huff of a chuckle from Mike’s lips, and he knelt to set the eevee back on the ground. Maybe he was a better candidate for a starter pokemon than Mike had originally given him credit for. “Well, if you were, we gotta’ work on your technique, huh?” A sudden mental image of the eevee in a flashy red helmet -- with flames painted down the side -- crossed Mike’s imagination. Oh, yes. “If you’re going to tackle someone, you gotta’ mean it. Otherwise you’re just gonna’ hurt yourself more.” He ruffled the soft, plush fur atop the eevee’s head almost absentmindedly. “Oh! Hey, I have a great idea -- d’you want to practice?” Mike’s face lit up, and he stood tall and stretched before jogging a few yards into the field. Hell, if this wasn’t obviously a ranger reserve biome, he could see himself relaxing and enjoying a couple of beers out here. He made a mental note to ask Kieran if he and his ranger buddies ever did exactly that. When he’d gotten far enough away, he turned on his heel and half-crouched, center of gravity lowered and arms stretched out wide. “Going for the shins is good if you can actually sweep the leg, but you might be better off going for somewhere softer,” he said, patting his stomach, “C’mon, try and knock me over!"

IN MY HEART DRIP DROP YOU FALL ONE BY ONE Being put down meant that he could shake his fur back into place. The fluffy mane had gotten a bit on the messy side whenever the human had picked him up and while it probably looked cool it was awkward on him to have it sticking up every which way. At least he had managed to convince the guy that he was totally tough and that hitting him had been intentional. And surprisingly enough the human wasn't mad about it either! In fact, he wanted him to hit again. Something he was totally up for. Especially since it would be prime practice for when he got to go to the outside world. < I'm gonna knock you on your butt! > His tail wagged hard as he lined up to get just the right angle. When he finally thought he had a good one he ran towards the man, not quite able to get up to the height of the stomach but... A rather unfortunate landing instead.tags x @bagel MADE BY ★MEULK

“Like you mean it,” Mike goaded, squaring off against the eevee. “Don’t hold back.” If he’d known the limitations of eevee’s vertical leap, he might have chosen different words. This was fun, though, something thrilling after so many days of monotony -- in the moment, it seemed like a perfectly good idea. What better way to help train young pokemon than with your own two hands? With a determination that was quickly winning Mike’s heart over, the eevee dug his paws into the earth and launched towards him, tail wagging. Mike willed himself not to tense up, to take the entirety of eevee’s tackle to really let the small pokemon feel like he was strong and -- Pain erupted through Mike’s body as eevee’s very, very hard skull impacted with the boys. He shouted some incoherent mash of curses and doubled over, taking one very weak, very shaky step backwards. “Uhhhhhhhh,” he groaned, both hands cupped over his goods as he slowly fell first to his knees, and then all the way forward until his forehead rested on the grass. “Good one,” he wheezed, “You jerk.” When he’d managed to regain some control of his body, pain no longer binding him into a tense fetal curl, he clambered to his hands and knees and glared the eevee down. Tears, startled from him by the shock of pain, glistened in his eyes. “You did that on purpose!” The accusation, more celebratory than anything, was followed by barking laughter, and Mike stood, brushing off his pants. “Fuckin’ vicious -- I like it! Uh, so, I’m Mike. I’m gonna’ be a trainer, and, I dunno’, I think you’re gonna’ end up really strong. Do you want to come with me?” He nodded over to the elevator. “My buddy Avery’s coming with me, and I think he’s gonna’ be getting a pokemon soon too, so we’ll have plenty of people to practice with.”

IN MY HEART DRIP DROP YOU FALL ONE BY ONE Oh heck. He'd done it this time. He'd full on killed a man and there was no going back. He would have to go on the run obviously. Change his name. His hairstyle. Wait, he didn't actually even have a name yet. Whatever. He would change it anyways. From Eevee to, um... Eeeveee. That was totally different and no one would ever suspect it was him. He started to walk closer to the human, to sniff and poke at him to see if he was actually dying or if he would maybe make it through. Luckily enough he seemed to be recovering. Sort of. < You're the one that told me to hit you as hard as I could. > It was true. It was the simple fact of the matter that none of this was his fault and honestly if he died, he could probably get away with it because he told him to do it. Instead though he was being invited to go on some sort of journey and honestly, it sounded like a lot of fun. He didn't even bother to pretend to mull it over. < Sure, but I wanna tackle more people! > Probably not the best thing to say but it was the truth at least.male - o5 - eeveeadaptabilityhelping hand ; growl ; tackle ; tail whip ; sand attackYoung and utterly inexperienced this eevee tends to talk the talk better than he can walk the walk. Especially considering he was fresh out of the nursery whenever Mike found him. But that doesn't mean he's not willing to try. Already being encouraged by the human he's feeling brave and ready to take on anything. Seeing that he got a positive reaction from knocking Mike on his knees he'll often find that to be the solution to most problems Mike or himself are having. He's still clumsy on his feet but with the right guidance he could be a proper battler in no time. At least he hopes so.
