This was it. The moment Varland had been waiting for.
The boat ride over to Inset had been a journey and a half (he'd spent half of it seasick), and then he'd barely had any time to settle before hopping on a jeep on its way out to the region's ranger station. He'd heard there were two different ways to get a starter here from people on the boat, and he'd carefully considered which of the two routes he would choose. He could have simply gone the easy route, choosing a Pokemon from a select three in the comfort of a nice, clean lab, but he figured he'd give the other way a go. He wanted to catch his first Pokemon here with his own hand (or with the helping hand of a ranger, he wasn't too picky about the specifics), and it definitely wasn't because he never would have been able to choose between the three. He was admittedly a bit of a softie, and all he'd have to do is look them in the eye to feel terrible about choosing one and leaving the other two behind.
This route was better, and even the rough bouncing of the jeep was much better on him than the constant rocking of the boat had been. He was from Hoenn for crying out loud, it wasn't like he wasn't used to ship travel! It was probably just his nerves more than anything. Back in Hoenn, if things really took a turn for the worse he did always have a home to go back to if he really needed to. Out here, alone and an ocean apart from his old team and family, if something went wrong who knew what might happen? If he didn't find a way of making some money fast he was going to be in pretty big trouble soon. He didn't want to have to keep living on the road, and he really didn't want to get his new cloths dirty already. Maybe he should have just went to the lab after all; he would have gotten to stay clean a while longer.
He was jostled out of his thoughts when the jeep pulled to a stop in front of what he assumed was the ranger station, and he quickly got out of the back. He thanked the driver as they went to park, and he tightened the straps on his backpack as he made his way inside.
"Hello? Uh, I'm here because I heard you could get a starting Pokemon out here. Who would I talk to or where should I go to get started?" he asked, having no idea who he should be talking to about this. Hopefully that would be a step in the right direction, they probably go this all the time, right?

IN MY HEART DRIP DROP YOU FALL ONE BY ONE Life was hard when there was enough summer heat to make you want to kill yourself. Of course it wouldn't be the first time that Kieron felt that way but when the air conditioning went out in the middle of the summer there wasn't much else of a way to feel. The tank top he had donned instead of his normal uniform top was still too hot for him but he needed to at least give some semblance of professionalism. Not to mention the amount of things that Ben dropped around here whenever Kieron ran around shirtless. It was a strange phenomenon to be sure. Then again he found himself spacing out a lot more whenever he had to work with the chubby blond. But maybe that was just the heat getting to him some. His Pokemon seemed to be enjoying it though. The Gloom adoring the heat as she sat in a small chair next to the counter. As long as she was happy he supposed that he couldn't complain too much. At least not externally. What he really wanted was to go out for a cigarette but there was no way in hell you would catch him out in that heat unless he had a job to do. His nicotine addiction could wait a little while for that. What little relief he had from the fan on the counter was worth more than the mild irritation he felt from not being able to get a little bit of his fix. It wasn't until someone came in did he stop slouching over the desk facing the fan. They seemed peppy and excited. Literally the last thing that Kieron had energy for at the moment. But he would just have to live with it. That was part of working the front desk after all. With a grunt he dug out a clipboard. "Fill this out and we can get started on the process. The rules are the first Pokemon you find is the Pokemon that is your starter. No exceptions to the rule. You'll have to figure it out on your own how to get the Pokemon to come with you." If worst came to worst and the Pokemon got violent he and Anise would step in but only then and that was a last resort. tags x Vena yo MADE BY โ

"Right, right, that sounds simple enough," he noted, taking the clipboard from the man. So it looked like he'd have to figure out his own way of convincing a Pokemon of coming with him; depending on the personality type of the first one he found, that could be easy or a real challenge. He filled out the form- for their records and for liability purposes, probably- and penned in his signature at the end once he was done. It was a strange thought that he hadn't actually had to properly sign anything in some time like this, most of the odd jobs he'd taken over the years not needing any sort of written agreement or contact. "Is there some kinda time limit or am I able to take as much time out there as I want, Mister...?" He didn't actually know what his name was, now that he thought about it. They hadn't properly introduced themselves to each other, though he didn't really know what proper protocol was with a ranger. Should he have said something when he arrived?
He hadn't noticed just how hot out it was that day en route to the station with the AC blaring in the jeep, but it didn't take much time at all for him to feel the uncomfortable heat bearing down on him. He sighed, handing the clipboard over to Kieron before slipping out of his jacket and tying the sleeves around his neck a bit like a cape. He wasn't about to wrinkle it by shoving it into his backback and he certainly wasn't going to tie it around his waist when it was one hundred time more likely to get dirty with whatever trekking he'd have to do out there. For good measure, he shrugged his backpack off too and slung it back around his shoulders over top the jacket so it wouldn't be completely exposed to the elements. Plus, if it ever came untied, hopefully he'd be able to keep it pinned there while he re-tied it. Maybe he'd be able to use this awful heat to his advantage somehow when he was out there trying to convince whoever his new partner was going to be to come with him.

IN MY HEART DRIP DROP YOU FALL ONE BY ONE The fact that he understood that this was a one time deal that would be dependent on how well they got along with a Pokemon was music to his ears. He hated when people ended up getting pissy because the Pokemon wasn't what they expected or something they liked. Then again he was kind of pissy himself about the weather so he couldn't say much. He began to gather up the gear they would need for the journey into the biomes. You never knew where the elevator would drop you and it was always good to have a basic kit so that you could be prepared for whatever happened. "You have as much time as you need." Though generally it didn't tend to take that long. Most Pokemon made up their mind pretty quickly about humans knowing that they agreed to this upon living in the safety of the biomes. With the rehabilitation programs they had it was impossible to keep every Pokemon here forever and this was a good way to get them acclimated to the outside world. By sending them with a new trainer, coordinator or breeder. "My name is Kieron by the way, my partner is Anise. She'll help you out if things start to get violent." Which could happen. You never knew what sort of Pokemon you would run into out there. The Gloom slid out of her chair upon being introduced and gave a small wave to the new human. While she was enjoying the heat she also enjoyed her job to a great degree. After all this was how she had met Kieron and they had grown so much together. She loved being able to do that for other humans and Pokemon as well. "Whenever you're ready follow me into the elevator." He had his travel pack ready and slung over his shoulder. Heading for the elevator he pressed a few buttons to get the doors to open. Stepping inside he scooted over a little bit whenever Anise came in as well. She waved to the new human so that he would know to follow them over here. tags x Vena yo MADE BY โ

"No limit then? Sounds good," he hummed, glad he wouldn't have to worry about the stress a time limit invoked. He still hoped it wouldn't take long because he didn't want to be in this dreadful heat any longer than he had to be, but no matter how long it took and no matter how hot it got it would be worth it. Though his new partner wouldn't be able to patch up the hole in him leaving his old Pokemon behind had made, he didn't want them to anyway. He would carve out a new spot all their own, forge a new bond and make a new friend. It wouldn't be the same, but that didn't mean that it was a bad thing. Besides, it wasn't like he'd never be able to see his old friends again. There was no point dwelling on the past when his new start was about to begin, right? It wasn't like him to be so sentimental around other people. Hopefully, he'd managed to keep his face neutral through those thoughts.
"Good to meet you, Kieron,", he replied, grinning as he took the other man's hand and gave it a few firm shakes before dropping it again, "'Name's Varland. And it's nice to meet you too, Anise!" He couldn't help the way his smile widened just a bit at her wave, giving her a small one in return. She seemed like a real sweetheart, and he definitely didn't mind having her as backup if things went south. "If things get too bad I'll be counting on you guys. Though, whatever might happen I'll probably be able to handle," he continued, briefly running a finger over the scar that adorned his left eyebrow before wiping a thin sheen of sweat from his forehead. He'd had run-ins with rough Pokemon before, though he admittedly always had Benny with him at the very least.
He couldn't get over how cute Anise was, quickly making his way over to join the two of them in the elevator with another smile on his face. What sort of Pokemon would his first new partner be? Would they be cheerful and friendly, like Anise here was? Would they be tough to deal with? Maybe they'd be vain, or maybe they'd even be shy. He'd had an abundance of different personalities in his old party, and he'd be willing to make whatever accommodations he had to.

IN MY HEART DRIP DROP YOU FALL ONE BY ONE As soon as Varland was in the elevator the doors closed behind him. The machine started to rumble and shift for a moment before all of a sudden plummeting down. It was unusual that they went straight down. Normally there was some sort of angle or movement that was deemed unusual by anyone who hadn't previously ridden on it. "You'll be fine. Just don't do anything stupid." That was the best advice he could really give someone. It was stupidity that got a lot of people in trouble in here. Stupidity and rushing into it without thinking about it. This guy didn't seem like the type to do that so hopefully it would be an easy trip in and out. "Grab a Pokeball off of the wall." He motioned towards a wall of empty Pokeballs that lined part of the elevator. It had recently been restocked meaning that there were plenty to choose from. Not that it mattered since they were all the same. The elevator finally rocked to a stop. Opening the doors to what appeared to be a dark forest. Interesting. There were only a few biomes in nighttime right now and a few of them were eternal night. Seeing the spooky looking house a little bit down the way he figured they were in the latter. This was ghost and dark type territory. Fun. He personally didn't care for this biome due to the fact that the ghosts were a bit crueler to people with a bit of a darker past. They liked to poke and prod at him, giving him a fright with shadows and shapeshifting. But he had come a long way from being afraid of his own shadow here. "Watch your ass here... You never know what's going to pop up." The only real sign of life was a small amount of light coming from one of the windows in the house... Great... tags x Vena yo MADE BY โ

Varland waited a moment as the elevator began to shift after the doors closed behind him. He was taken by surprise when it launched downward, quickly balancing himself against the wall to keep from hitting the ground at the rapid movement. "I'm the last person you gotta worry about when it comes to stupid," he assured, though he'd have to remember to keep that advice close to his chest. He could be rash at times admittedly, but when it came to unfamiliar environments, especially ones that could potentially be dangerous, he knew better than to rush in headfirst. He glanced over to the wall of Pokeballs when Kieron mentioned them, taking one and turning it around in his hand. Though it hadn't been that long ago since he'd last held one, its weight in his palm had a new and exciting meaning now. Once he was done here, the latest chapter of his life would truly begin.
The elevator came to a hard stop almost as fast as it had started, and Varland only just managed to catch himself as the impact shot up his legs. He was immediately fascinated the moment the doors opened, and it looked to be nighttime now. He knew it hadn't taken that long to travel this far, so it must have been a special feature of the biome they'd arrived in. When he took a few cautious steps out of the elevator a sudden chill ran up his spine as he nervously eyed the creepy-looking house in the distance. "I'm gonna guess we can't choose a different place to look, right?" he sighed, trying to get his rapid shift of nerves under control. It was embarrassing to admit, but he was afraid of ghost-type Pokemon. He knew they weren't all bad by any stretch, but he'd had enough encounters with them to know where he stood on the matter. All he could do now was hope that either something besides a ghost lived here and he'd run into that first, or pray that he'd manage to run into a friendly one. He found his eye drawn to the single light in the window of the house and he sighed. "Guess that's as good a place as any to start, huh? I don't know if you guys have to follow me around this place or not so I should probably tell you I'm a little...sensitive to Ghost-Type antics. So, uh, if I do anything embarrassing, that'd be why." Id didn't feel good to admit, but he figured he should give them a heads up.
Well, he wasn't going to get anywhere staying rooted to this spot (even if that was exactly what he wanted to do at the moment). With deep breath he began his slow, careful trek toward the house. He kept his eyes open all the while, doing his best to take in the environment on the way there. He kind of hoped something would try to happen outside so he could be done with it, but if he were really unlucky he'd have a terribly unfortunate present waiting inside for him.

IN MY HEART DRIP DROP YOU FALL ONE BY ONE Kieron wasn't the only one who was unnerved by this place apparently. While normally that would probably give someone else some comfort all it did for him was make the ranger realize that he really needed to put his own discomfort aside for the sake of the mission. Someone here had to be able to keep a level head and it might as well be him and Anise. They were here to make sure that the newbie was kept safe not worry about the fact that ghosts were pretty awful pranksters when it came down to it. "Wherever the elevator lands is where we're stuck until you find a Pokemon." Or get kicked out. Though he didn't feel like that would be the case here. Not when there were no indications of this guy having any sort of behavior that would warrant it. Though he had been wrong about people before. He couldn't exactly consider himself the end all authority on judging people.
< Don't worry we will keep you safe! > The Gloom seemed cheerful enough about it as she began to trek towards the house. Of course there wouldn't be any signs of Pokemon outside of the creepy looking building. That would be far too easy for the Pokemon that lived around here. Kieron was a little less perky following behind. While normally they would leave the person to their own devices for the most part it was important that no one get separated when it came to ghost types. It was serious business dealing with them after all. The candle light continued to flicker inside the building, though now it seemed to be moving just a little bit more than before. There was no telling what sort of creature was waiting inside, taunting with the light. And Kieron really hoped that it was one that could at least pretend to behave.tags x Vena yo MADE BY โ

Kieron confirmed what he thought; they were stuck here until he caught his Pokemon. Perfect. He only sighed in response, turning back to the spooky house again, once more eyeing the flickering, taunting light in the window. Why couldn't it have been on the first floor? Anise tried to reassure him, and that admittedly did help to calm him down some. "Thanks. Hopefully it won't be needed, but I feel better knowing you guys are coming with me," he admitted, continuing on with the two of them toward the house. Every step didn't feel quite as dreadful now, but he was both relieved and disappointed no Pokemon interrupted them in their trek to the building. It wasn't long at all before they'd reached the front door, and Varland could only stare at it with apprehension and nervousness. Maybe this wouldn't be so bad! Maybe there wouldn't be oozing walls and horrifying screams waiting for them when they entered. Not every ghost was like that, right?
He slowly turned the doorknob, lightly shoving the door so it opened on its own. It creaked loudly, but other than that nothing happened. At least the door wasn't booby-trapped or anything. With a sigh of relief he slowly poked his head inside and looked to the right and left. Nothing terrible; mostly just a lot of cobwebs. "So, uh, mind if I follow after you guys? I can lead the way too if you want, no biggie, just, uh, might take awhile to get up those stairs if I'm in charge of the pace," he noted, knowing himself far too well to not at least warn them he'd likely take a step every few minutes. It didn't hurt to be cautious, but in situations like this he was far too cautious thanks to his own fears. If Kieron led the way though, he'd have no choice but to quickly follow because he was even more afraid to be left alone in a place like this. Hopefully when they came face to face with whatever was waiting for them he wouldn't embarrass himself by screaming like a little girl or passing out. Ugh.

IN MY HEART DRIP DROP YOU FALL ONE BY ONE As soon as the door was opened it set off a strange chain of events that really couldn't be helped. Between the sound of something wet hitting the floor and the light moving even more quickly in the room Kieron couldn't help but feel like something awful was going to happen. The light shifted quickly, shuffling from one side of the room to the doorway, meeting the boys in the foyer of the room. The sound that came next sent chills down his spine for more than one reason as the Pokemon finally revealed herself. < Ohohohohohohoho! > The laughter was nothing short of obnoxious as the small candle partially covered her mouth as she did it. Eyes following the scared human male that had fallen into her totally legitimate trap. < Ohohohohoh > She laughed once more before putting her hands on what would probably be classified as hips. < You enter a ladies foyer without even announcing yourselves? How bold! How crass! > It was just like those novels that she had read before she came here. They were vagabonds no doubt. Here to plunder her treasures and kidnap her! At least one of them was. The other was the killjoy ranger who had brought her here to begin with.

Well, if there was any positive to the next chain of events, it was that the light source decided not to make them climb all those steps and meet with them face to face in the foyer. Varland tried hard not to think about what that wet slapping sound was (he doubted he wanted to know), and nearly jumped out of his skin when a laugh echoed around the room. He managed to catch where it had come from, a small, candle-like Pokemon who laughed again and he barely managed to keep his feet planted on the floor this time. His heart was hammering fast, and when she met his gaze he held it for only a few moments before having to divert his eyes to the floor. He gave a small bow to the Pokemon, using the gesture as a partial excuse to keep his eyes planted on the ground because he didn't want to seem too rude. He wasn't sure how the ghost-type would take that. Right now though, he needed to calm himself down before he got too ahead of himself and he needed to try and placate her. He tried to keep the fear out of his voice, but it was obvious that he didn't completely succeed. "I'm terribly sorry for the intrusion, ma'am! I-It was pretty rude of me not to at least knock, huh? S-Sorry again about that, but it was kinda important that we come here to speak with you. I had, uh, a proposition of sorts for you." The quiver of nerves was very apparent in his stammering, but it was the best he could muster at the moment.

IN MY HEART DRIP DROP YOU FALL ONE BY ONE This was an excellent example of someone knowing their place when they were in the face of greatness. This was a human who knew who was in charge! Of course that was her. She was the ruler of this house as it were or at least that was how she fancied herself and no one would be able to tell her otherwise. The other ghosts who lived here were merely here because she allowed it of course. Never the mind that they avidly avoided her because of how she behaved. She didn't think that there was anything wrong with how she acted though. It was how she had always behaved for as long as she could possibly remember! < Ohohohohohoh! It seems that at least one of you has some manners! > Her attention wasn't even divided anymore. If the ranger wanted to make himself useful he could clean up around the place or something. After all his job was to make sure that her life was comfortable and with all these cobwebs and whatnot she just wasn't happy. Of course she hadn't even bothered to try to clean them herself but that was what the servants were for after all. < How bold of you to come into a lady's home and ask her for a favor. It is the middle of the night. Think of the scandal! > Not that there would really be any scandal... And come to think of it for some reason it was always night time here. But that wasn't important for now.tags x Vena yo MADE BY โ

It seems that at least part of what he'd said was right, because she took note of his manners. He just had to keep this up for a bit, and they would be able to leave this place together. Hopefully. So far she wasn't exactly scary (more dramatic than anything), but he knew from experience that that could change with the drop of a hat so he had to keep it up. Would he have to keep it up the entire time they were together? ...Well, he'd worry about that when the time came to it. At least Kieron and Anise had been quiet so far, which helped him relax a little as that put his fears of immediate danger at ease a bit.
"The nights are long here and we weren't sure when the best time to drop by would be," he started, not knowing that for sure but since it had still been the middle of the day topside he could only assume, "And it's p-probably kinda rude to just barge in and ask for a favor, huh? Sorry about that." He finally straightened up from his bow, his back beginning to ache from holding the position so long. He took a deep breath, training his eyes on the Litwick again. He wasn't scared. Though he hoped he wouldn't come to immediately regret his next words. "If you'd like, I-I can do a favor for you in return for mine." He had no idea what kind of favor she would even want, but he could only hope she'd dismiss the gesture or it would be something easy. This creaky old house was still giving him the creeps, and he knew she wasn't the only Pokemon in the biome. It was only a matter of time before something more malevolent showed up and he wanted to get them all out of there before that could happen.

IN MY HEART DRIP DROP YOU FALL ONE BY ONE Now that was something that she could get behind. The idea that the guy would owe her a favor was something she could appreciate. It had been a long time since she had the authority to lord over someone else in earnest. While she pretended that she was in charge here it was obvious that she was far from the strongest. She wasn't suited to living in this dingy hole. Sure she was a ghost type but she still had standards. And it had been a long time since she had seen the true sunlight. < Fine! If I accept your favor then you'll have to be my manservant! > That was her terms and conditions for whatever it was he wanted her to do. Of course she had a general idea of what he could want. She had been told about this sort of thing when she came here. That eventually a trainer might come along and that she might end up becoming a starter Pokemon or whatever. But that didn't mean she wasn't going to get hers first.tags x Vena yo MADE BY โ

He wasn't sure what he had been expecting her favor to be, but he shouldn't have been surprised that would be her condition. With how she'd been acting up until this point it should have been a given, really. Her manservant. Forever, probably. And she seemed like she would be needy. Just his luck. Though, who knew? Maybe being out of this biome, out of this house would make her less demanding? That was wishful thinking. She seemed like a Pokemon who was set in her ways; no other Pokemon had bothered them since they'd gotten here and Varland expected it was because the others were avoiding her due to her...dramatic nature. When he thought about it like that, he almost felt kind of bad for her. Maybe she called for so much attention because she never got any? That was likely him reading too much into the situation and she just loved being the center of attention in general. Well, in order to get them all out of here anytime soon, he knew what he had to do. He bowed again, hoping he was low enough to hide the light apprehension on his face. "Well, in order for me to be your manservant, you'll probably have to accept my favor too, ma'am! It's not like I'd be allowed to stay here," he paused a moment to nod his head toward Kieron, "So, uh, I guess what I'm trying to say is, if you want me to be your servant, you'll have to leave this place with me. Is that...okay? Ma'am?" He tried not to hold his breath, but really anything could happen at this point.
