His early years were spent playing in treetops, camping with his family, and being carried on hiking trips, all of which brought a smile to his face even as a baby. When he was several months old and still not talking, his mother Adria took him to a doctor, who confirmed that Silas was born profoundly deaf. This was a revelation that his parents hadn't expected, but they took it in stride, and picked up some sign language books on the way home to teach themselves. Soon enough Silas was signing along with his parents, asking to be carried on their shoulders, when the next camping trip was, and excitedly telling them about the bird pokemon that would frequently alight on their windowsills. True to his hometown, the boy loved being outdoors, and it was all they could do to bring him inside during rainstorms (lest he catch his death, his mother would quip). Despite his baby-faced looks, his hands and feet quickly calloused to protect him from the rough bark and sharp rocks underfoot. When he was five his father Mateo started homeschooling him. Overall Silas was a difficult student, only truly focusing on topics that fascinated him the most while shunning the rest. It was only the promise of letting him play with one of his father's pokemon that motivated the boy to slog through literature and history lessons when he was older. But when it came to pokemon? Silas was a natural. He had a knack for befriending them, or at least tolerating his presence. Perhaps it was his calm demeanor, or how he studied and mimicked their behaviors intently from his bedroom window. When he turned ten, his parents surprised him with a pokemon: an aipom companion, who upon being introduced immediately scrambled up the boy and onto his shoulder excitedly. They'd received the aipom from a service pokemon facility, and so the pokemon was also trained to act as an interpreter when needed. And thus, with his first pokemon companion, Silas was free to explore the neighboring routes on his own. The nearby Safari Zone was a popular spot for him to visit- he never really had any interest in battling pokemon, nor catching the ones that wandered the park. He simply watched, scribbling a quick note or doodle into a notebook that his mother had gifted him. Aipom was always there, happy to cling to his backpack. That's how he spent most of his teenage years, and later Silas would transition from a notebook to a blog to record what he'd seen out in the field. The idea of being a researcher was a thought he'd entertained, but hadn't been serious about until he realized how much he enjoyed blogging about it, and how it shouldn't be that hard to transition from blogging to writing. Silas saved up some of the money he'd earned as an attendant at the Safari Zone to move to Inset and kickstart his (hopeful) career. His trusted Aipom he left to a younger Deaf girl named Charlotte who'd recently moved to Fortree, and he bid his proud parents goodbye for now. [attr="class","rostercatsub2"]HISTORY |
