They stood up, and brushed themselves off. Fox had been sitting on the ground, outside the Ranger's station, probably looking like an idiot. But they had needed to calm down, to take stock of the situation. They were (hopefully) going to get their first Pokemon. Finally! They were only 19 years old, after all. All their friends and schoolmates had gotten Pokemon years before them, or at least had Pokemon around the house. All Fox had ever done was watch them battle or watch contests on TV. Their parents had never had Pokemon, for whatever reason, Fox had never pried after that one time they had tried and got met with a snippy 'we don't talk about that'. But it was time! Their story could metaphorically begin. Hopefully. But they were trying not to think of all the ways it oculd go wrong, of all the ways they could end up leaving without a Pokemon.
Fox had arrived at the Pokemon Lab in Cassopeia, and had been presented with two options - get a trainer ready Pokemon, or, and this option had immediately appealed to Fox, make the journey to the Ranger's station and catch their own Pokemon. Maybe not catch though, the Lab assistant had emphasised. More like, potentially negotiate with. Fox was bad at negotiations, but they wanted to get off on the right foot with their Pokemon and thought that maybe, putting in the extra effort would make them stand out. Not that they were anything special of course, Fox didn't believe that at all, and was actually incredibly anxious about being a drain on the Rangers. Which is why they had been sitting out on their butt front of the Ranger's station, getting dust all over their otherwise clean but faded black jeans. Jamming their hands into their pockets, taking a deep, deep breath, and entering the station.
They were immediately assaulted by the lights in the station. Fox had issues with sensory things, and unnatural light was one of Fox's main triggers. Of course they had learnt to deal with it considering they were exposed to unnatural light almost all the time, but in times when anxieties were already running high, they found themselves more conscious of the strain on their eyes. It was going to be okay though, they kept telling themselves. It was going to be okay. They were going to get a Pokemon and they were gonna rock out with it. They were gonna end up being the best of friends and be amazing partners - oh, who were they kidding. Those thoughts were just fake positivity. At best they'd be friends. But Fox knew that Pokemon had their own personalities and finding one that Fox, with all their issues and stuff, got along with, could potentially be very difficult. Fox took another deep breath, realising they had been standing at the front door, probably blocking the way, a bit like an idiot.
Perhaps the Rangers were used to gormless people standing about not really knowing what way is left or down or all around - messes, really. They must get a fair few people who had never had any Pokemon experience before. Or maybe those people were sent back to the Pokemon lab and told not to step out of their depth in future. Maybe Fox had it all wrong and they should turn around, make the trek back to Elara town, and get back on the bus and head back to Cassopeia. Maybe everything they had decided was wrong and -
"Hello?" Fox called out. The impulsiveness of speaking out caught them by surprise and they blinked a little bit, as if trying to figure out where the voice had come from. It was a good thing though, as they had been about to turn around and leave, making themselves look even more like an idiot than before. Fox took another deep breath, a step forward, and rested their hands on the front desk, looking around for someone. "I'd like to get a starter Pokemon here, if that's possible?" They hoped someone had heard them, that they wouldn't need to repeat themselves, but they had spoken out and now they couldn't leave. It was just etiquette. Their journey, as they say, had begun.

{ } He was coming in from a late night. The bags under his eyes showing a bit of exhaustion. He'd managed to get a couple hours of sleep before he needed to come in but the call was there earlier than he wanted. But someone else had to take over watching the Rhyhorn who was having a hard time with her eggs. She was a first-time mother and it was always hard for them. But a tired ranger was no good on making sure that she was safe with her eggs. So someone else took care of her while he came here to make sure that the front desk was manned and those new trainers weren't left to themselves. Coffee mug in hand he rubbed his face some and only vaguely listened to the new trainer at the desk probably ask for a new Pokemon. He was tired, he was irritated and he just wanted to get this over with. Kieron let out a grunt and set some of the paperwork on the counter. "Fill these out. And know that once you get in there the first Pokemon you find is your starter and that's it. No do-overs and no second tries." If they filled out the paperwork and agreed to it then that would be that. Nothing else to do but keep the trainers happy.MADE BY VEL OF GS + WW

They'll be honest, Fox was a little scared by the man coming in, looking as tired as all get out. They figured that the life of a Ranger must be a tiring one, with all the missions and helping Pokemon, and whatnot, so they tried their best not to judge when the man grunted at them. Life was hard on everyone sometimes, right? So no need to be scared or judge or anything, Fox kept telling themselves. There was no need to turn around and walk out and cry because someone had simply grunted at them. As Fox fought to get their emotions under control, and fight the negativity - their mind was racing, telling them that the man was specifically annoyed with Fox, not just tired in general - they smiled and said a quick "thank you," as they took the paperwork they needed to fill in and looked it over.
Of course there was a gender option. There was always a gender option. It made sense, of course, to have a gender option. But gender options were the bane of Fox's existence. At least this one was a write in, rather than a score the ones you're not out. "Can I put nonbinary in for the gender section, or do you need female?" Fox was so used to asking this question, it was the one question they could ask without getting anxious about it. Well, mostly. The answer made Fox nervous, because they really didn't like putting in female unless it was necessary, as much as they considered themselves 'female aligned', they still preferred to put nonbinary in where and when possible.
They skimmed over everything else, and filled it in as necessary. Paperwork was a boring, yet necessary evil. And yet, Fox still hesitated on their age, still wondered, am I really that old? They're not even old, but they still think of themselves as younger than they are. Fox wondered why that was for a moment, before moving on to the next thing. Signing the bottom of it, they smiled, excitement starting to take over.
All these thoughts were running through their head. Of course they were hoping for a flying type, but they weren't really picky of course. Any Pokemon would be good. As long as they were hopefully kind and understanding. Not that Fox was looking for a Pokemon to be their counsellor, but y'know, someone to talk to sometimes might be nice. Especially after just arriving at a new area. Oh, Fox was incredibly excited now. It was close. So close.

{ } To be honest Kieron didn't care what people put on their paperwork so long as it was filled out. If they ended up lying or something that would usually come back to bite them in the ass one way or another. So when the trainer asked if they could put non-binary on the form he just shrugged. "Put what you're comfortable with. It's your records." Whatever they wanted to be known about themselves was up to them. He gathered the rest of his things and moved over to the large door. Pressing a few buttons to get it open was simple as that when you knew the password. Locking it up was something more important than dealing with the hassle. It was hard to believe that someone would try and break into the biomes but Esme believed it was possible. "When you're done with that get inside the elevator." Once the door opened he slid inside himself. It was easier if they moved things along with him leading.MADE BY VEL OF GS + WW

Fox finished quickly with the form after the man said they could put non-binary on the form. That made them happy. Being able to put down what they wanted, and what they were, made them feel valid and whole, in a sense. They had a little smile to themselves as they turned around, probably looking a little weird to the guy who was trying to help them get their starter. But that's okay, right? Being a little weird sometimes wasn't a bad thing, and anyway, Fox was sure most people came in here excited beaming messes waiting to begin their journey through Inset, and Fox didn't want to let their depression get the best of them here. They were excited too, for the first time in like, years, it was true excitement. Not manic, not euphoric. Fox wondered how long that'd last though, and hoped they wouldn't make a fool of themselves in front of their future partner Pokemon.
They entered the elevator, and bounced on their heels slightly, fidgeting a little. They should buy one of those fidget cubes, they thought as they waited for the man to punch in whatever it was he was going to punch in in order for the elevator to go up or down, Fox wasn't sure - but yes, purchasing one of those cubes probably seemed like a good idea for someone who fidgeted as much as Fox did. Although they had seen some things about them annoying people. Hopefully the Pokemon they got would be understanding and not easily annoyed by things like fidget cubes, but who knows? They could just as easily get a Pokemon that hates everything just as much as Fox does most of the time. They'd make a right pair then. But they should stop trying to guess about what kind of Pokemon they were going to get and just get on with it.

{ } The elevator didn't move quite as expected. Instead of up or down it moved to the side. To whichever biome the computer decided to take them to. Sometimes it was hard for people to wrap their heads around the fact that they had built this place with so many areas but in order for the Pokemon to be happy it had to be done. He grabbed one of the Pokeballs from the wall and held it out for them. "Here, this is yours to catch your starter in." It was easier to give them the Pokeball before the elevator stopped. That way when the time came they weren't scrambling for the device to capture their Pokemon in. "It can be nervewracking meeting your starter Pokemon for the first time. If you need help don't hesitate to ask me or Yvette." Carefully he patted the Pokeball on his belt. His Gloom was a great help whenever it came to negotiating between Pokemon and trainer.
Finally though the elevator stopped. The mechanical sounds of it slowing down interrupted anything else Kieron might have said. It was time. The door opened slowly, revealing a gentle woods. It was a good place for beginners to get their starter. He'd seen a couple partnerships bloom here. Albeit not all of them had gone well but they'd bloomed nonetheless. A small bug clung to one of the trees. Poking and prodding at some of the bark to try and move it out of the way. He knew that there was sap here and he would be damned if he didn't get some of it. That Heracross had bullied him off of every other tree in the area and this one was his. Ledyba wasn't about to give it up.

Words: 429 Fox isn't really disappointed! They just weren't expecting a bug type! | * fox ithriel * [attr="class","empncl"]
When the elevator started moving, Fox was a little surprised. They didn't let it show of course, but they were surprised it didn't go up or down as expected of an elevator. But that's just how things go, you don't get what you expected. The man handed them a pokeball, and Fox nodded in thanks at him. They held it in their hands, rolling it around a little, but then stopped. They didn't want to drop it and potentially look like an idiot. I mean, they already looked a bit like an idiot - the closest they'd came to a Pokemon in the past was genuinely watching battles, yet here they were, potentially going to negotiate with one. They started shaking slightly, panicking. But Fox started to count their breaths - in for one, out for two, and so on - until they calmed down. Nervewracking was right. They should have gone to the lab, and met some nice hopefully chilled out Pokemon, but it is what is it and they're here now. The doors opened.
Speaking of not getting what you expected however, Fox didn't expect a bug Pokemon. It wasn't that they weren't fond of bug types, but they weren't... exactly.. top of the list. They weren't really on the list. Fox didn't think about them. At all. So seeing the Ledyba, Fox had an instant crushing disappointment. They tried to quash it, but it wasn't quite working. Their emotional state was tanking, and they wanted to kind of run away - not to look for another Pokemon, but just to hide from this specific one. But that would be rude, and Fox didn't spend years in therapy for their emotions to get the better of them all the time, so they swallowed. They were scared though. They knew their voice was going to betray the fact they were emotional.
They took a couple of steps forward, towards the Ledyba. Gentle steps. Fox didn't want to scare the Pokemon. They only got one chance, after all. "Uh, hi. Fox cringed inwardly. Their voice was a little low. It was unintentional. They weren't meaning for their emotions to carry over to their voice but sometimes it's kind of unavoidable.
Fox sat down. They just sat down. They needed a minute to collect themselves. And maybe by sitting down they could seem less threatening to the little bug. It must be hard, being such a tiny, unassuming Pokemon in a world where most Pokemon are considered 'better' than you. Maybe that's what they could bond over.
"I'm Fox."

{ } Ledyba knew that there were people there. After all, he wasn't stupid. The elevator had opened up and he was going to have to deal with this entire thing. But not before he got himself some of this sap. There was no way he was leaving without just a taste. His wings shifted slightly on his back and antennae wiggled as he listened to the human talk to him. They acted like he was some sort of big and bad creature. He knew that he was just a bug though. Not even a top-tier bug. He was one of the lowest of the low. A ledyba. But that wasn't his fault now, was it? This human would just have to make do with the fact that they'd drawn the short end of the stick starter wise.
Carefully he moved from the little hole that he had been working at making bigger. He could smell the sap in there, he just couldn't quite reach it. That was where this human was going to come in handy. Ironically enough. < You have hands. Come here and use them to help me. Open up this hole more. > He stared at them expectantly, eyes narrowed slightly as his wings continued to fidget on his back. MADE BY VEL OF GS + WW

Oh, Fox was truly afraid of messing this up. Their emotions had got the better of them, and they really didn't want to botch up their chance of getting a starter, so when the bug turned to them and spoke, they smiled. Fox wasn't upset that it was a Ledyba. They just weren't expecting it. Of course, they'd rather have got something like, a Pidgey, so they could get their much dreamed of Pidgeot, but a Ledyba wasn't so bad, was it?
Fox kept trying to convince themselves that it was going to be okay, even if they and the little bug didn't get along. They stood back up, and walked towards the bug. Open the little hole? Alright, that they could do. They reached up towards the place the Ledyba had gestured to, and managed to get their fingers in, and open it slightly more. "How open do you need it?" They asked the little bug, trying to sound more cheerful. Fox thought they succeeded. It was becoming easier to manage the initial wave of disappointment as time went on. They were just really hoping the little bug was easy to get along with. It'd be much easier to overcome it if they were a nice, understanding Pokemon. Not that Fox was holding their breath though, they were far too negative for that. They were doing their best to try and fight it, but it wasn't going too well. They were constantly running the worst case scenarios through their head, and this was no exception.
"So... What kind of stuff would you expect from a trainer?" Fox wasn't really sure what they were supposed to ask to get to know the Ledyba better, but they figured that was a decent start. Better to start somewhere than not start at all, right? And they didn't want the little Ledyba coming along in Fox's journey and being disappointed in everything that they were doing. It'd be kind of cruel, to force a Pokemon to come along and do stuff that they didn't like. "I was thinking about focusing on contests and stuff... Of course we'd battle, and stuff, but I'm really interested in coordinating."

{ } At least the human seemed to be agreeable to what he needed them to do. That was always a plus. Carefully he moved away from the small hole that he had been working on so that the person with hands could actually have a crack at it. He'd have that sap if it was the last thing he ever did. And seeing how this was going it would at least be the last thing he ever did here. < Just wide enough so that the sap starts to come out. My hands aren't really made for that sort of thing. > Heracross had horns that could wear away the bark to get at the best parts of the sap. He had to do it the hard way. Picking and poking and prodding at it. It was hard work to get the good stuff. < To be honest, I haven't ever thought about it. I know that I'm a big disappointment as far as starter Pokemon go. > Especially since there were plenty of other Pokemon here with more power or more desirability. < If you want to do contests you'll eventually want to find a Pokemon with more flare or whatever. > A bug on the stage wouldn't do much good after all. "I can imagine," Fox mused in reply to the bug saying his hands weren't made for getting at sap, as they made the hole just big enough for sap to come out, slowly working at it. They got sap on their hands, but that was okay. They just wiped it on their jeans, figuring it'd be rude to ask if the Pokemon wanted to lick it off their hands - they had just met, after all. Fox stood back to let the Ledyba get at the sap, and smiled, glad to have helped. The initial disappointment was fading now, and the Ledyba seemed nice enough - this wasn't going to be as bad as they first thought.
As the bug said they were a disappointment, Fox started to feel bad. Not in a soul crushing way, but bad that they actually had been disappointed by the bug. They didn't want any Pokemon to feel that way, much less their potential starter Pokemon. "You're not a disappointment," they said to the bug, smiling. "People might not expect it, but I bet you can be just as good as other Pokemon with the right training and moves." They were surprised that their words didn't sound hollow - it wasn't that they didn't believe what they were saying, but Fox figured that the bug might not believe them. Fox did though. They knew that any Pokemon could be decent if trainer and Pokemon worked hard enough. They just might have to work harder than others, thats all.
When the Ledyba mentioned that Fox would need to find a Pokemon with more flare, Fox 'hmmd' gently. It was true that they'd need to find a good partner for the little Ledyba, at the least. "I think that with the right work and thought put into the routine, that you could definitely work. Especially in contests with two Pokemon - with the right partner Pokemon we could really pull it off. People might not expect to see a bug on the stage, but I definitely think that it's worth a shot." It wasn't fake optimism, Fox really believed that they could work well with the Ledyba. "Of course, I won't force you to come along with me if you don't want to. But if you do, I'd be happy to have you as my starter - once you get your sap, of course." Fox smiled at him.

{ } He mulled it over internally. If he didn't know any better he would have maybe thought this trainer was sincere about being alright with him being a bug. Not that it would make any sense. After all, he wasn't big and strong like the Heracross. Or even interesting like the Nincada. He was just... Him. But maybe he would be able to learn to live with that. As the human's hands moved away from the hole they had helped to create he moved closer to it. Sticking one of his own hands in there so that he could nibble on some of the sap. It tasted all the sweeter for what it was worth. These trees that were hard to get into were usually reserved for those that were big and strong. Perhaps partnering up with someone who was stronger than he was would be beneficial.
Even if it was just for getting foods like this more often. Though it wasn't as if he had much of a choice in the matter either. Not when the ranger was there to stare him down over it.< To be honest, I've been ready to leave for awhile I guess. It's hard to be one of the smaller bugs and survive around here. > Not that he was mistreated in any way. The quality of life factor was just that this was like the wild. Though with more monitoring for if anything really got out of hand. If nothing else he would be going with someone who would at least treat him right. Even if they were a bit deluded on his skill level. < If you're really not that bothered by me being a Ledyba I don't mind going with you. > He'd tasted what he needed to and now there were things to do. Fox smiled as the Ledyba stuck his hand in and got some of the sap, glad to have helped the bug get his snack. They really were okay with the bug, and felt terrible for their original wave of disappointment. They were already thinking about ways to integrate the Ledyba into a coordination routine - admittedly, this was as a Ledian, and once they had gotten to know each other a lot better. That was the most important part, becoming friends with their partner Pokemon. That was what they were gonna focus on. Fox nodded at the bug as he talked. They could imagine that living around here could get a little tough without all the bells and whistles that other Pokemon had.
"I'm really, 100% okay with you being a Ledyba." Fox said seriously, maybe adding a bit too much of the seriousness, but they truly meant it. They were excited now, that they a partner that they'd managed to get along with. That was a good sign, right? It must be a good sign. Definitely couldn't be a bad sign. They smiled again, and took the Pokeball they had been holding, and looked at it. "You can go in there or you can fly slash walk, whatever it is you do to travel, it's really up to you." Fox wasn't sure what the bug would prefer, so waited with the Pokeball out.

{ } With the Pokeball held out to him he took a last couple bites of the sap. Whoever came this way next would get a nice treat finding the tree already open. Hopefully it wasn't someone larger than him. Heracross could find his own. This tree was prepared for the slammer bugs. He flitted his wings over to the Pokeball, landing on his new trainer's arm for a moment to examine it. Now was a good a time as any he supposed. Pressing the button himself he allowed the red and white sphere to capture him. Locking in his fate as a trainer's Pokemon.ledyba - male - o5 rattled tackle - supersonic Ledyba often things lowly of himself due to the fact that he knows he's weak even as far as bug types go. He doesn't think that he stands out well or that he'll ever be of real use to a trainer. Until he grows more comfortable and confident he'll be waiting to be replaced by someone bigger and stronger than he is. Especially since Fox is a coordinator. He won't be comfortable with their hopes riding on him until they do some serious training to get him prepped. Despite thinking that he's the weakest of the weak he won't let someone pick on others for their shortcomings. He'll especially be protective of other less used Pokemon types. Other lesser bug types and grass types that usually get looked over will be especially watched by him. If he can get over his insecurities then he'll be a decently strong Pokemon. He has all the makings of a leader if he just has a trainer to push him in the right direction.
