“Hi mom!” Fane cheerily said into her phone, holding it with her shoulder as she adjusted the egg in her arms. “Yeah, I’m on route one now! I got my starter from the ranger’s station- you should have seen it, it’s huge! And you’ll never guess which pokemon I have now,” she paused for a moment, listening to her mother’s guess. “Nope! She’s a grimer- from Alola! She used to work at the Tidesong Hotel!”
The grimer beside her beamed at the mention, and the breeder flashed her a smile and a quick thumbs up. “What was that, mom? Oh, yeah- we settled on the name Ceridwen on the way down here. Isn’t that pretty?” Another pause. “Okay. Yep, got it. I will! Have fun and say hi to all the trial captains for me! Love ya!” Fane waited to hear the click as her mother hung up. Wrapping the teal egg with one arm- it was a lot heavier than she anticipated- she grabbed the phone and slid it back into her pocket.
“Phew. Okay!” For once, things seemed pretty alright! She had two pokemon- an alolan grimer she could talk to for ages at a time, and a magnemite. Granted, that last one didn’t seem to like her all that much based on their limited interaction, but she’d work on it. She even had an egg now, which made being a breeder official, right? Confident wasn’t the word she’d use to describe herself now, but that familiar, perpetual trace of doubt was nowhere to be found for the moment. Maybe it was just the excitement of starting her adventure, or the way everything seemed new- but whatever it was, she was going to enjoy it for as long as it lasted.
<Your mother sounds nice!> Ceridwen said, slogging along next to her new trainer, teal and yellow drips rolling down her body only to be reabsorbed at the bottom. <You mentioned the trial captains- so she’s taking the island challenges now?>
“Yep! She’s taken a few of them before, and right before I left the islands she started training her team up again. I bet she’ll do fantastic- oh, hold on...” The duo stopped on the dirt path. To their right was a skinny trail, unmarked, hardly more than a worn line where people had trampled the grass to get somewhere before. Standing on her tiptoes, Fane tried to see where it led, but the wildflowers and stalks of grass blocked her view. “Think we should try it?”
<We’ll never know where it leads if we don’t!> The grimer remarked, starting ahead of the girl. With dripping hands, she parted the grass to make more room. <Come along, and let’s see!>
“Woah, hey, okay- wait for me!” Inspired by Ceridwen’s attitude, Fane followed, holding the heavy egg close to her abdomen to protect it. The messenger bag bounced at her hip as she walked, occasionally snagging on a stray wildflower. Blades of grass taller than she tugged at the tresses of her wavy blonde hair and scratched at her face, but she persisted after the grimer, who seemed to be having no trouble navigating the path.
<Oh, Fane!> Ceridwen said at last, parting the last patch of grass. Fane caught a glimpse of smooth, blue water between the stalks. <Look- a lake!>
Sure enough, once they emerged from the brush, a sprawling lake lay before them peacefully reflecting the sunlight off its surface. It was almost a perfect mirror of the sky, the same crisp blue hue with fluffy clouds sailing past, only broken by the occasional ripple.
It wasn’t quite the ocean, but it was beautiful, and Fane wandered down to the water’s edge. She set the teal egg gently down; the weight made a divot in the soft moist earth, ensuring that it stayed put. Satisfied that it wasn’t going anywhere, the girl peered into the lake. The water looked plenty clean, and despite the chill in the air, she found herself regretting that she hadn’t packed a bathing suit.
Ceridwen slogged her way towards the trainer, with a grand gesture towards the lake. <Ah, this reminds me of Lake Valor in Sinnoh! I used to frequent there when I worked in Veilstone City. Such a lovely place to sit and think, very peaceful.> She let out a nostalgic sigh. <You know, there are stories of legendary pokemon hiding at the bottom of the three lakes of Sinnoh. I wonder if there are any stories about this one?>
“Really?” She was only really familiar with Alola’s legendary stories, where the Tapu had their own islands to guard and protect. And the ones she knew peripherally, like Kyogre and Rayquaza or Arceus, had the sea, the sky, and all of creation respectively. Grey eyes looked out across the surface of the lake- it seemed like such a small place for a legendary by comparison.
