please show some mercy in your distant tone Something was fishy about all of this. Caden didn't know what exactly was up with these guys in the robes but anyone offering nice stuff for basically free had to have been up to something. Maybe call it a gut feeling that was left over from years of being a Ranger. Something just didn't sit right about this. Vanilla Sugar didn't seem to be having the same reservations. The Happiny was busy collecting the shiny red gems into a pile while Caden glared at the back of the merchant. They were on a bust, here! How could she just fool around like that? < I think you're just being a silly. That guy isn't making my super power ability to detect evil go off. I bet they just want lots and lots of shinies to take home. > VS hummed from the side, stacking a little tower of gems up on top of one another. They were quite a ways away from the merchant even if the other person was in seeing distance, so they could talk candidly without arousing suspicion. "You don't think this is, like, weird at all? Not even a little?" < Nope! >"Something just doesn't sit right with me." Caden crossed his arms and pouted before he sighed and sat down on the ground next to Vanilla Sugar. He poked at a loose gem and pouted. Even if he was suspicious, there was nothing he could actually do unless something happened. "This is such an easy job," Polaris bragged while he herded another set of gems towards his pile. As a limbless dragon, the Dratini couldn't very well dump his prizes into a bag one at a time the way Emily could, but dumping them into one little hill of gems worked fairly well. "Much easier than the last gem rush. These are all just, like, on the surface. We had to dig for 'em last time."Emily looked over curiously while she plucked another gem from between the tall grasses of the plain and hummed thoughtfully. Her three eggs--one yellow, one bluish white, one steel gray and purple--were nestled in the grass nearby and out of concern for their safety, she didn't venture farther than a few feet from them at any given time. So even with the advantage of legs and hands, she'd collected fewer gems than her Dratini. "There were gem rushes in Inset before?" She'd talked to a couple of people around these weird pedestal things and none of them had mentioned anything like this happening before. Polaris didn't miss a beat. "No, not here," he said airily while he flicked the gem into his pile with his tail. "Oh? Where, then?" Emily paused in her gem hunt and pulled out her phone, ready to look it up. Maybe researching the last gem hunt would give her some knowledge of what to expect from the prizes--and what to expect when this one ended. "Were there salesmen there, too?"Polaris swiveled around and fought the urge to scowl at the phone in her hand. Why did humans always need to double check everything? "Oh... all over," he said ambivalently. "And no, the salesmen thing is new, I guess." He needed to distract her before she realized he was lying through his teeth about all of it. So he looked around and his wide eyes landed on Caden. "Oh look! A Happiny!" Polaris didn't give the faintest fuck about the dumb Happiny or its pouting trainer but, well, they were better than Emily going all Sherlock Holmes on the latest of his fabricated stories. So he slithered on over, leaving his pile of gems in his wake. He didn't particularly care if someone else stole them--he only wanted to prove he could collect gems faster than everyone else. He didn't care about what happened afterward. Besides, if his gems were stolen, that would make for a good story. Win, win. "A Happiny? Aren't you guys pretty rare sights around Inset?" It was his subtle way of fishing for a compliment--because, obviously, Dratini were pretty rare too. please show some mercy in your distant tone Vanilla Sugar twisted her body around at being addressed. Caden had poked his head up and watched the dragon pokemon approach. He hadn't even noticed that someone else was nearby, so he raised his hand to give a short wave to Polaris and Emily, brow cocked in question. The Dratini didn't seem hostile, so he stayed perched next to his pokemon and just watched for now. < Really? > VS chirped, listing to the side cutely to tilt her head. It was hard to express yourself when you don't really have a proper neck. She was kind of just a face high up on a torso, if you thought about it too long. Either way, her momentary confusion cleared up and the normal type brightened. < I mean, yeah, totally! It's probably because I'm a super cool hero. We're all heroes and have to stay hidden away so we can fight crime. >Caden snorted as Vanilla Sugar nodded to herself. Her logic was infallible, after all. It made sense that she was rare if you looked at it in that light! Her trainer ruffled her little shoot of hair, earning a small huff and a pout up at him, which he just grinned at. "Are they? That's pretty cool. Dratini are, like, pretty rare, too, I think?" Even if Vanilla Sugar didn't fall for the slight manipulation, Caden walked headfirst into it. He shrugged his shoulders some and looked at his nails, feigning nonchalance. It was pretty obvious. He was a bad actor. He didn't intend harm, he just had a stroke of genius was all. "Are you collecting these gems, too? Does this happen often in Inset. I only moved here a month or so ago, so...." Caden drug out the 'o' for a few syllables longer before shrugging. The Happiny held approximately zero interest for Polaris until she brought up being a superhero. Then she was downright fascinating. Why hadn't he thought of that? Superhero. His eyes widened at the new possibilities. Yes. That could be why he'd come to Inset--because he was such a superhero (in disguise, of course, in case someone tried to look him up) that he'd gotten rid of all the villains in another country, and now he was here to do the same. The obvious first question was what villains was he planning on removing? That was a tricky question since there really... weren't any villains in Inset, at least none that Polaris was aware of. But a cocky tilt of the head, a knowing wink, and a smoothly delivered, "You're welcome," would do the trick there. Yes. Yes. This was perfect. He looked anxiously over his shoulder, scouting out Emily's position (she was heading their way, but slowly) before turning back to Happiny. "Don't tell my trainer," he said in a hushed whisper. "But I am, too! She can't know, though. For her own safety." Surely another superhero would understand the gravity of his situation, right? Right. Shortly afterward, Caden gave Polaris exactly the ego stroking he wanted. The Dratini decided he liked these folks an awful lot. "Oh, I suppose," he said in his best attempt at modesty. He was speaking normally, now that he didn't have an alleged secret to reveal. "Dragons in general are pretty rare. So among dragons, we might be on the more... common side." He did his best impersonation of a shoulder shrug. For a pokemon without arms (and therefore without shoulders) it was a decent attempt. "And yeah, my trainer and I were collecting the gems." He gestured over his nonexistent shoulder, bobbing his nose in Emily's direction. By that time, she'd gathered her three eggs and was heading over. "I haven't been here very long but I've been here longer than her. And I haven't heard of anything like this in Inset." He didn't want to delve too deeply into that particular lie so he focused on what Caden had said instead. "Where'd you come from?" If push came to shove, the boy's answer would let Dratini know which places he quote-unquote hadn't come from. (He'd actually lived in Inset all his life, right on route one--but none of these people needed to know that.) please show some mercy in your distant tone Vanilla Sugar gasped but nodded quickly at Polaris' admission. Another superhero! It was cool to meet other one since as far as she knew, it was just her and Caden who were fighting the good fight right now. < That must be very hard on you. > The Happiny said with a tinge of pity in her voice. She wasn't sure what she would do if Caden didn't know about her super cool and totally rad powers. She bet that it was also hard to keep his trainer safe from all those nasty people who wanted revenge. She was glad she didn't have to do that and Caden could take care of himself. Caden listened also listened, nodding and humming and grunting at the appropriate times. He jumped at the chance to talk about his home region, or just himself in general. He grinned wide and kind of wistful as he thought of back home and how to answer. "Unova! Born and raised right in the big city. I used to be a pretty big time Ranger before coming here. I've been all over the world and lived for at least a little while." Caden shrugged his shoulders but kept his head tilted back, clearly proud of himself. "You know, I wouldn't say that Dratini are 'common'. I've met more Goomy than I have Dratini. Got covered by a whole family out in the swamps in Kalos, once. I didn't feel clean for day after, ya know?" He sort of wrinkled his nose but at least it was one of the more pleasant times he had been 'slimed', as it were. But, back to the task at hand. He could't let himself be distracted. "Do you think this is, like, ten kinds of fishy? I do. And I've been around enough to trust my gut at this point, too. Something about those guys really fry my rice, if you know what I'm saying." < Oh, Caden. > Vanilla Sugar sighed again and shook her head, placing her little hands on her hips. < He's just being a big silly. Those guys seems okay to me. >Vanilla Sugar Clover381 words eggie thread for whismur and fall mystery egg friendship for happiny: 605/25000 (Soothe Bell Active for 25% Bonus) MADE BY VEL OF GS

Oh sweet mother of mew, these two just kept lavishing on the praise and attention and Polaris could not get enough. "It is hard," he agreed. "It really is." To really sell it, Polaris lowered his head in his best impersonation of sorrow, or exhaustion, or whatever it was that superheroes with unrevealed secret identities felt. Caden, meanwhile, was not making Polaris's job very easy. Unova and all over the world. That vague answer meant Polaris couldn't very well say one particular part of the world he'd come from. Unless... Unless he used the same line! The light bulb over Polaris's head flickered to life in one glorious instant. Why couldn't a Dratini have lived all over the world? The could swim, after all, and most wild pokemon were reluctant to tango with dragons. So what the heck. Why not? "Ooh, Unova?" He nodded his head knowingly. For the life of him, Polaris couldn't remember the name of the 'big city' in Unova. There was a Dragonspiral Tower there, he was pretty sure. Or was that tower in Johto? He couldn't keep his geography state. He was just about to chance it when Caden doubled down on Dratini's rarity (it was really more of a factual statement, but Polaris interpreted it as a compliment) and all thoughts of Unova were pushed from Polaris's mind. He winced appropriately after the Goomy story even though all he really wanted to do was beam with joy. This kid thought he was rare! And not gross, like those dumb sticky Goomy! Polaris nodded in time to Caden's complaints about the gem dealers. The mention of those guys frying Caden's rice earned him a bewildered look. Polaris couldn't make heads or tails of what that meant. But he let the confusion slide off just as easily as it had landed and he looked over at the pedestal in the distance. "I do know what you're saying," Polaris lied. He did his best to mimic the skeptical-ish look on Caden's face. "It fries my rice, too."Was blatantly repeating the last two things the boy had said (albeit in reverse order) too obvious? Before Polaris got a chance to worry about that, Emily arrived on the scene. She had one egg in either hand and the third egg nestled safely in her backpack. "Making some new friends, Polaris?" The Dratini bobbed his head. "She's a superhero," Polaris said eagerly, nodding toward the Happiny. (He laid the admiration on as thick as he could with his wide smile. He even shook the tip of his tail, kind of Growlithe's wagging tail. That was in character, wasn't it? If he was a superhero who needed to pretend to not be one, like he was allegedly doing with Emily, wouldn't he be super impressed and overjoyed to meet a real life superhero?) "And that," he said happily, moving his eyeline to the boy. "Is Caden!" They'd never formally introduced themselves, but the Happiny had said Caden's name once. That was enough. "He used to be a ranger!" The boy had seemed awfully proud of that and if there was one thing Polaris knew, it was that the easiest way to draw compliments out of people was to compliment them first. Emily looked suitably impressed with Polaris's fancy new friends. "So two superheroes, basically?" She knelt down and set her eggs on the ground, so she could stand unencumbered. "I'm Emily. Nice to meet you guys."WORDS ► 573 POKEMON ► polaris the dratini NOTES ► Quest egg thread for pichu, seel, and wimpod, +5 ruby gems (15) can we do more vanilla sugar x polaris in the future?
