[attr="class","rostercat2"]She was born in Mossdeep city, the third of four kids, and would remain there for the majority of her life. Her two older brothers and younger sister kept her company during the long days that her parents worked. The brothers were primarily  interested in the pokemon around the city, but the Space Center is what captured Akane’s attention, and from a young age she studied with the intent of contributing one day. Books on physics and stargazing filled most of her childhood.

Her oldest brother died in a car accident when she was just starting high school, and the little family is broken apart. Akane doesn’t remember much- she doesn’t try to- but she threw herself into her work. Anything to keep her mind off her brother and the sadness and the arguing her family sometimes devolved into. Her surviving brother dropped out of college to venture off into the Alola region, starting his own pokemon journey there and writing back on occasion.

In college she buckled down and, after four intense years, double majored in physics and computer science at age 22. No time for breaks, she entered graduate school immediately after, believing that was what she wanted to do with her life. For a time, it was. Research was enjoyable, and the chance to immerse herself in the field was everything she’d dreamed of as a kid. At 26, four years after starting graduate school, she defended her thesis and obtained a PhD in computer science.

Again, no breaks. She worked as a postdoctoral researcher with another organization, but somehow her passion had become a living hell. She was burned out, exhausted. It didn’t help that the people at her new job were overly competitive and happy to sabotage one another rather than work together. Akane was miserable, trapped in a job she thought she would love and spent the past eight years working towards non-stop. To say the stress was eating away at her was an understatement; most days it was difficult to pull herself out of bed, let alone drag herself to work. Insomnia plagued her, she couldn’t concentrate on work, and perhaps worst of all, nothing mattered anymore. She didn’t know what she was living for.

She didn’t know where the idea came from- maybe her siblings. But on her way home from work one day, Akane stopped by a local pokemon adoption center. They had a variety of pokemon, but one in particular seemed to call out to her, and she left with a very sorry-looking Zubat in her arms.

It took a while for the Zubat to warm up to her, so long had she lived in that adoption center with little hope that someone would come along. But Akane took the bat everywhere with her- work, home, the park, restaurants. Anywhere the woman could be found, the Zubat (now named Vector) could be seen following close behind or clinging to the bottom of her shirt.

Vector was a huge help in bringing Akane back to life, and she seemed to have a positive influence on the pokemon as well. But she was still stressed and still hated her workplace and still struggled with intrusive thoughts that seemed to follow her around wherever she went- and finally, she had enough. She quit, and with some of the money she’d saved up, flew to the farthest region she could manage- Inset.
