She and her mother moved to Heahea City a few years later when Fane was still a toddler and have lived there ever since. As a single mother and former trainer, Eira retired from taking the Island Challenges to raise Fane. But she never stopped caring for pokemon, and so Fane was raised with several of her mother's more tame companions, including a Mareep, a Skitty, and a Phantump. Though an only child, Fane never lacked friends. She showed promise in school from a young age, taking a keen interest in her studies and quickly devouring any book she could get her hands on. As she grew older, she opted to take more challenging classes- and all was well, for a time. Come high school however, her classes were starting to overwhelm her. Between studying and swimming, life became a delicate balancing act, one that kept her constantly on edge. But giving up either her courses or her place on the swimming team would be admitting failure, and in her mind, not an option. Her mother grew concerned with how anxious her daughter constantly was, but whenever she tried to bring it up, Fane quickly changed the subject. Halfway through her sophomore year was the accident- a bad slip poolside during swimming practice. Fane was admitted to the hospital with a serious concussion and a whiplash, and she stayed for a couple days under observation. It could have been much worse, they told her, but that was a small comfort. Her fine motor coordination suffered; pain radiated from her limbs, which the doctors blamed on a pinched nerve in her neck. She was out of school for two long months. But it was during those months when she finally figured out what she wanted to do once she finished school. Fane found an injured Zubat in their backyard; with her mother's help, they were able to catch the little bat pokemon and take it to a rehabilitation center. After seeing how her daughter's face lit up at the center and how eager she was to learn about what they did, Eira suggested that Fane focus her studies with that goal in mind. In particular she suggested that Fane study to be a breeder, so that she could learn firsthand about raising a variety of pokemon. When Fane returned to school at last, she had a renewed sense of purpose. It still wasn't easy- on top of stress, some symptoms persisted. The sharp, stabbing nerve pain came and went in spurts; some days it was more difficult to concentrate than others. But she was working for something, and that mattered to her. She graduated a couple of months after turning seventeen. After extensively researching all of the regions, she chose to come to Inset to start her own journey. With her mother's blessing and a promise to check in occasionally, she set off. Fane opted for the ranger’s station to recieve her starter pokemon- a friendly, well-traveled grimer. She was fascinated by the facilities they had available for rehabilitation and realized two things. One, she still had a lot to learn; two, in this region, she’d need to become a ranger to do what she wanted. With newfound resolve, she departed with her grimer Ceridwen. Pursuing what she was truly interested in rather than being graded in a classroom setting did wonders for her self-esteem, and though the occasional anxiety remained, her confidence flourished. She traveled parts of the region for a year, frequenting pokemon centers and daycares, thumbing through the handbook her mother gifted her until it was well-worn and practically memorized. She returned home after a year to visit her mother, who’d recently resumed her island trials. Fane was pleased to show her mother Ceridwen, Maeve (a drifloon she’d befriended), and a previously abused magnemite she’d slowly coaxed out of their pokeball. Eira told her daughter of her most recently completed trial, and the two bonded over their shared experiences. After a month of visiting her home, Fane returned to Inset reinvigorated. She headed immediately to the ranger’s station, ready at last to apply to be a ranger. Rather than show a gym badge or a coordination ribbon (she had neither), the young woman had a different idea in mind. She released the magnemite from their pokeball for a brief moment. A year’s worth of progress paid off, as the steel pokemon didn’t immediately try to zap anyone else in the vicinity, though it bobbed in the air behind Fane, buzzing warily at the stranger. The ranger recognized the magnemite as a previous rescue- those deep carvings in their body were hard to forget. Fane was accepted as a rank 1 ranger for her patience and the effort she put into helping magnemite, as well as her studious knowledge on pokemon rehabilitation. As one of the newer rangers, she seeks to prove herself and is looking forward to exploring the wilder parts of Inset, as well as gain more hands-on experience.
