He was the fifth-born in the Gallagher family and he wasn't the last. A set of twin girls followed eighteen months after him, then another boy a year later. There was Liam, Daniel, Anna, Saoirse, our boy Aiden, twins Emma and Ellie, and Sean after them. After eight kids, their parents were finally satisfied with human additions and began adding pokemon to their household. They took in Pidoves with injured wings. They adopted stray Houndours. They brought in Gligars whose tails were injured until the beasts were healthy enough to produce poison again. Anyone who needed help was welcome in the Gallagher home and it was an attitude that was passed on to all of the Gallagher children. His father was an engineer in the city and his mother had family money, so she could afford to stay home with all the kids. She was a constant presence in their lives. She taught them all how to cook. She taught them basic hosting manners, like how important it was to feed your guests and how people always love the person who gives them food. And their parents taught them about the world through first hand experience: the kids all had passports from a young age and they regularly traveled away from Inset. When Aiden was nine years old, they summered in Kanto, staying at a rented condominium in Celadon City. He and a few of his siblings were fascinated with the grass gym. They watched challengers every chance they got. One time, a challenger came in with a Fearow who had been taught Heat Wave. The bird couldn't control the fire attack properly and the plant-filled gym caught fire. The Gallaghers had just gotten back to town after a sojourn to Saffron City and Aiden and his younger sisters were heading off to watch the next gym match just in time to see the smoke spiraling from the building. Firefighters came roaring in from all directions with powerful water types blasting all manner of water attacks at the rapidly spreading flames. There was too much foliage in the gym, though, and the water wasn't enough. Two dogs--a Growlithe and a Vulpix--ran in from Route 7 and sped into the fire. Their flash fire abilities activated and absorbed the hottest of the flames in an instant. Many of the water types, even with their advantage, were burned in the encounter. And even then, they hadn't been able to put the fire out. The dogs, though... they stopped the fire in its tracks and allowed the firefighters to put out the smaller, contained sections. And they walked away unharmed. That day, at nine years old, Aiden fell in love with fire types. They were the best pokemon in the world. The strongest, the coolest, the most beautiful. Nothing and no one could convince him otherwise. He wasn't much for school so during class, he would doodle his favorite fire type of the moment or pull out his phone and research fire type moves. He was utterly obsessed. Nothing changed in the intervening decade. Some of his siblings excelled academically and some excelled at sports, but Aiden was more of a social butterfly than anything. People were his strong suit. Not books, not tests, not games. People. He was funny, he was kind, and he never got nervous (or at least he never let on that he was). Thanks to the menagerie of pokemon that were always floating in and out of the Gallagher household, he was decent with pokemon, too. When he was a freshman in high school, the pokemon league announced that they were opening gyms in Inset. And that was the light bulb moment for Aiden. That was what he wanted to do. Watching all of those gym matches had told him that the path of a trainer was his for sure, but now he had a chance to do it at home. Even after all his travels, he never found a place he liked better than Inset. It was home in a way that other regions would never be. His parents were firm about one thing, though: none of their kids could have a pokemon of their own until they had a high school diploma. So Aiden did just well enough to graduate high school (he had a solid C-average). It took a few weeks for them to actually mail the diploma in but once he had it in his hand, he had it framed and packed a bag. He loved his family, but he had a future planned out and he didn't want to wait. He left the passport at home--he wouldn't need it anymore--and spent the last of his personal money on a ticket to Cassiopeia Village. He didn't need his family money, after all, not when he planned on being a successful trainer from the get-go. [attr="class","rostercatsub2"]HISTORY |
