He listened to what she had to say as he crawled forward, considering. He didn’t stop moving until he made it over to her, and lightly butted his hard head against her shoe. That was about the extent of his “attack”, and he stared up at her with the beady little eyes on his back. < Well, at least you know your stuff. If we fought there’s no way you could win, anyway. Your weak human attacks would bounce right off of my hard back, > he muttered, trying hard not to think about the fact that all she’d have to do to win is pick him up and set him on his back. Without help, there would be no way he could flip himself over again and that would be that. How embarrassing would that be after all of his posturing?
From his angle he couldn’t see Mimi and Shirley, so Kabuto was a little confused when she tilted her head, but he listened to her request. Something about it irritated him, but it also intrigued him. He’d always been a little bit of an outcast in the pool, proving far more excitable than most of the others of his kind down here. While he liked the pond and he was fine with the others, there just wasn’t enough excitement for him. He wanted to fight for real, and he definitely wasn’t going to get to do that staying here. This might be his only chance to get out. < So I’m just the first Pokemon you’ve found down here, huh? Delightful. > He sounded just as sarcastic as before, scuttling back a short ways so he wasn’t right on top of her shoe anymore. < Doesn’t sound like you’d be too thrilled to have me, though, or you’d be trying a lot harder to get me to come with you. If I just said no you’d roll over and leave, just like that? Not even try a little harder to convince me? > If he had a proper mouth that she could see, he would probably be smirking right now. < If you really want me to come with you, I might consider it. If you beg me a little. > He at least sounded smug enough. He wondered if she would actually do it.

< Well, at least you know your stuff. If we fought there’s no way you could win, anyway. Your weak human attacks would bounce right off of my hard back, > .She wondered if he realized that if she flipped him over he probably wouldn’t be able to do anything to her. If she was a crueler person she would do just that. Maybe later down the line if they really did become partners and he was being a particular pain in the butt. She had hung her little sister on the back of her door when she wouldn’t stop messing up her room while Akina had been trying to clean. < So I’m just the first Pokemon you’ve found down here, huh? Delightful. > There was that lovely sarcasm of his. Were all kabuto this sassy or was she just lucky? He at least backed up a little so he could look her in the eye. < Doesn’t sound like you’d be too thrilled to have me, though, or you’d be trying a lot harder to get me to come with you. If I just said no you’d roll over and leave, just like that? Not even try a little harder to convince me? > He wanted convincing? She could probably manage that. < If you really want me to come with you, I might consider it. If you beg me a little. >Akina smiled down at the little rock shaped pokemon. ”Well I doubt you would appreciate over the top groveling, far too condescending. So I’ll give it to you straight.” She adjusted herself so that she was now leaning forward so she was at least closer to the kabuto’s level. ”Whether or not you decide to join me you will always be my last ‘first’ pokemon. You control my fate as a trainer today.” She held out a hand to him within his reach. ”I can’t guaranty we will always get along but I can promise our journey together will be an adventure of a lifetime. And if we one day part ways I can honestly say it would have been an honor to have such an adventure with you. So what do you say? Would you do me the honor of being my partner?”Vena

Kabuto would have actually kind of preferred over-the-top groveling, if he were honest. He would have vastly preferred it to the bluntness of Akina’s next statements. He’d been prepared for proper begging, and casually agreeing < Well, if you’re so desperate I guess I have to join you now! >, but that was out of the question with this. He’d suddenly been thrust out of his comfort zone and he didn’t like it. But he’d already made his decision, so what could he do? We wasn’t about to just roll over and agree so easily though. He couldn’t let her think he was too agreeable.
< You’re putting an awful lot of power into my claws, you know? “Controlling your fate” is kind of overdramatic, though. I guess I could stand to guide you, since you seem like you’d be lost without me! > He let out a laugh at that, and it sounded a touch condescending. Good. Hopefully that had hidden his momentary surprise; he didn’t want her thinking she could walk all over him, because she couldn’t. He knew he was hard-headed, but he had an image to maintain and he’d make sure Akina and whatever Pokemon she caught after him knew that he was the boss. <I’ve got no doubt we’re not always going to get along, but what’s the fun in a trip with someone who’s just your yes man all the time? > He sighed, glancing at her outstretched hand. He shifted so he was sitting up again, putting one of his tiny legs into her palm into as close to a handshake as he could get. < Now let’s just get out of here before I change my mind. > He wouldn't, though. He was ready to ditch this cave and battle to his heart's content. kitsu

It was a moment before the kabuto replied. Had she thrown him off with her words? < You’re putting an awful lot of power into my claws, you know? “Controlling your fate” is kind of overdramatic, though. I guess I could stand to guide you, since you seem like you’d be lost without me! > She ignored the slightly condescending tone to his words. <I’ve got no doubt we’re not always going to get along, but what’s the fun in a trip with someone who’s just your yes man all the time? > Akina smiled at his words, ”I couldn’t agree more.” He placed one of his claws in her hand and they managed a handshake of sorts. < Now let’s just get out of here before I change my mind. > With that Akina pulled out the pokeball she had gotten before coming down the elevator. ”See you on the outside.” She tossed the ball at him and watched as a red light pulled him into the pokeball. It clattered to the ground, rocking a few times before becoming still. Akina stepped forward to pick it up. She pocketed the ball and turned to the ranger pair. ”Well it looks like I’ve nabbed myself an interesting partner. Now how about we head up for some fresh air and I can show you my sketches.”Vena

Mimi had watched the entire situation go down with bated breath. There had been so many times where she’d wanted to interject something, but even she knew better than to interrupt bonding between a trainer and their first Pokemon. It hadn’t looked like that’s how it would go down at first, with how eager to take her on the Kabuto had been, but things had turned out okay in the end. Mission accomplished! She gave Akina a smile once it was all said and done, handing her back her torch and finally dropping her own into a more normal position. “Looks like you’ve got a real handful of a partner, but they tend to be more fun in the end.” Shirley gave Mimi a small smirk. < I know exactly what you mean. Take good care of him, Akina. The handfuls are the ones that need the most looking after. > Mimi pouted and grumbled something under her breath about not being a handful, but she smiled afterward at Akina’s suggestion. “Yes, please! I’m super done with this dank cave, I want to see the sun again! Hope it’s not too much of a shocker for that little guy,” she giggled, carefully leading the way back through the tunnel and into the main cavern. She replaced her torch on the wall, ushering Akina back into the elevator after she’d done the same. Shirley nudged her shoulder and suddenly a look of recognition flashed in her eyes. “Oh, right! Before I forget, I’ve got something for you,” she said, slinging her backpack off her shoulders to dig through it. Eventually she found what she’d been looking for, and handed a small satchel to Akina. “Just some goodies to get you started, courtesy of the rangers here. Hope they’ll be useful!”
Akina received a starter kit!
+ 5 pokeballs + 2 potions + Inset Region map + TM Case + Pokedex
Kabuto - Male - 05 Swift Swim Scratch - Harden
Kabuto can be a bit of a handful. Even among the other Kabuto he lived with at the bottom of the pool, he was a rabble rouser among their generally calm and peaceful group. He constantly tried to pick fights, but the other Kabuto would generally just swim away and mind their own business.
He has an inflated ego, and even when he knows he isn't the best at something he'll try and bluff his way to the top. He doesn't like being looked down upon or ignored, and has a penchant for sarcasm of the highest degree. He's quick to pick a fight, even if he's dreadfully outclassed. He's got a big mouth and likes to trash talk as well, though he'll sulk if he gets put in his place. He's prideful, but his pride can be bruised rather easily. He'll always try to hide it though, as he hates to show his own internal weakness to others.
Kabuto may have lived in a cave all his life, but it doesn't mean he's easily impressed by the outside world. He doesn't like being out in bright, hot sunlight and prefers the cooler comfort the night brings and he's not shy about making this fact known. He likes water, of course, and will always request Akina keep at least one spare water bottle on her at all times so she can douse him periodically through the day.
Kabuto likes feeling in control and in charge, and it's probably best to humor him when he's in one of his moods unless you want to deal with a long string of complaints and heavy sarcasm. When surrounded by Akina's other Pokemon, he will do his utmost to try and establish his seniority as her first Pokemon and take charge. He might be rather disagreeable when things don't go his way, but he is still grateful to Akina for taking him out into the world and out of that dull cave, and he's surprisingly loyal to her because of this. Of course, it's not something he'd ever admit aloud and will try his hardest to make sure nobody realizes that particular bit of softness.
