Emily shrugged. "I'm not. But a lot of people back home were, uh, hoggers," she explained, repeating Aislin's terminology even though she'd never heard motorcycle enthusiasts refer to themselves that way. She was quite glad Aislin had been talking to Sam when she mentioned the medical field bit. The fact that it wasn't directed at her made the comment that much easier to ignore. Baby steps, right?
Even though Aislin was mostly advising Sam, it was an issue Emily would face eventually. With any luck, it was an issue she'd face starting tomorrow, when (if?) she left Cassiopeia's lab with a starter. So she felt like contributing to the conversation a little bit more. "I don't quite know what it is," she said slowly, as though thinking it through for the first time while she spoke. "But I can't picture myself naming pokemon after people. Even fictional ones."
She looked at Sam curiously while he mentioned his own interests--reading and video games--and tried to think of other naming schemes of sort that she could use for her own team one day. Even if the lab rejected her, the egg in her arms would still hatch one day. And that pokemon would want a name of its own, wouldn't it? The boy mentioned his past as a researcher and in an instant, all thoughts of naming schemes were out the window. Oh dear. A researcher? What if he knew people in Hoenn? What if was a medical researcher and knew people at U of H?
The worries were senseless, really. She hadn't been anyone noteworthy. She hadn't been kicked out of med school, or anything that would have merited a story. She just hadn't been accepted. How many hundreds of people were rejected every semester? Even if this researcher boy did have connections at one specific branch of one specific university (each highly unlikely), why would anyone gossip about one particular student who wasn't let in? The rationality of it all calmed her down before the nerves really had a chance to flare up. "What, um... what sort of researcher were you?" There. That was a good, safe, reasonable question that drew attention back to Sam and away from her. Wasn't it?
