Both of them were stars in their respective careers, so their squabble splashed across the tabloids. Her mother, a lawyer, took custody of their three children. Her father, an actor, moved in with his girlfriend. The two of them split, and then Faye was born. Out of all her children (two more were adopted into the family years later), the mother loved Faye the least. She was everything her father was--crass, cruel, and dramatic--and nothing her mother was. The two frequently butted heads as Faye grew, and at some point the other Clery children were brought into the fray. The family collapsed into an almost political mesh, complete with alliances and psychological warfare and intrigue. Despite her rocky relationship with her family, Faye was having a good time. She willfully splurged her generous allowance and surrounded herself with friends, though they might better be described as lackeys. She enrolled into the fashion department of a high-level vocational school in her teenage years and enjoyed a queen-like status there. She basked in the present and spent no thought towards the future. All she wanted out of life was to get rich and famous, really. It was in the beginning of her sophomore year that she was introduced to the concept of coordinating. Her friends dragged her from contest to contest, which began to catch her interest though she had no prior experience with Pokemon. She could do it better, Faye thought with each coordinator welcomed onstage. If there was anything she was good at, it was manipulating group dynamics. She knows how people tick, knows what makes them dance. Pokemon couldn't be much different. Her mother, being the practical sort of person, despised coordinators. She would loudly comment on its frivolity whenever a contest came up on TV, then change the channel. Rather than discouraging her, it fueled her to make her decision. She wanted to be a star. She wanted to lord over a team. She wanted to command the stage. And most of all, she wanted to spite her mother. She decided to get an early start. Most young celebrities didn't age well, so she might as well go in like a blaze while she was young. Then she could retire early. Failure wasn't even a possibility, much less an option. After a particularly harrowing couple of weeks in the Clery household, her mother grudgingly agreed to let her go out on her own for the summer under the condition that she must win two ribbons by the end of summer. If she couldn't manage this, then she was to come back home. Knowing full well that winning only one ribbon in a season was unfeasible for a complete newbie, her mother was convinced that Faye would come home with her tail between her legs. It was high time she learned what the real world was like. Faye agreed. It would be difficult, but she had a secret weapon on her side that her mother would never see coming: the endorsement of her father. The two of them had quietly been in touch since the winter of that year, and their freakishly similar personalities drew them close together. With his help, the impossible condition her mother placed upon her teetered on the brink of improbable. And even if she did fail, by some unforseen circumstance, Faye had no intention of holding up her end of her promise. Everything was going to work out just fine.
